John Cowper Powys’s A Glastonbury Romance: A Reader’s Companion Updated and Expanded Edition W. J. Keith December 2010 . “Reader’s Companions” by Prof. W.J. Keith to other Powys works are available at: https://www.powys-society.org/Articles.html Preface The aim of this list is to provide background information that will enrich a reading of Powys’s novel/ romance. It glosses biblical, literary and other allusions, identifies quotations, explains geographical and historical references, and offers any commentary that may throw light on the more complex aspects of the text. Biblical citations are from the Authorized (King James) Version. (When any quotation is involved, the passage is listed under the first word even if it is “a” or “the”.) References are to the first edition of A Glastonbury Romance, but I follow G. Wilson Knight’s admirable example in including the equivalent page-numbers of the 1955 Macdonald edition (which are also those of the 1975 Picador edition), here in square brackets. Cuts were made in the latter edition, mainly in the “Wookey Hole” chapter as a result of the libel action of 1934. References to JCP’s works published in his lifetime are not listed in “Works Cited” but are also to first editions (see the Powys Society’s Checklist) or to reprints reproducing the original pagination, with the following exceptions: Wolf Solent (London: Macdonald, 1961), Weymouth Sands (London: Macdonald, 1963), Maiden Castle (ed. Department The University of British Columbia Vancouver 8, Canada i Abstract Powys' novels are deeply rooted in a sense of place; much of their conflict develops through the effect of a particular locality upon the characters who live there or come there. This thesis demonstrates how Powys' sense of place is com• pounded of both a feeling for the physical landscape, and an awareness of the historical and mythical traditions which form its human past. Powys finds correspondences between the scenery and legends of a locality and the psychological states of his personae, and thus uses landscape and myth for symbolic purposes. The interaction of myth and landscape largely creates the characteristic atmosphere of the five novels studied here. -
In Defence of 'Morwyn'

The Inmates has been a strong contender, but for some the prize goes to Morwyn1. John Brebner, for example, complains that Morwyn “fails miserably as a novel”2. Glen Cavaliero, in his sensitive study3, finds specific elements to praise in Morwyn: he uses the words “coherence and economy“, finds the Rabelais presentation moving, and describes the “spirit of questing curiosity, mediated half-humorously through the psychological reactions of the narrator”. But he also writes “nevertheless Morwyn fails to realize Powys at his best”, especially in relation to the presentation of characters: he alleges that the character drawing is “perfunctory.... Morwyn herself is simply an idealized embodiment of the sylph- like figures of whom Powys writes more interestingly elsewhere.” John Brebner supplies the strongest case for the prosecution and the awarding of an F grade to Morwyn. He lays five charges against the novel: its arguments against vivisection are not developed, the characters are thinly drawn, the themes are not fleshed out, details in the narration seem to spring from the author’s whim and there is an overall lack of organization. Brebner’s explanation for this disaster is creative exhaustion. Powys is drained of creative energies after the previous novel, Weymouth Sands. Is a defence possible against so many charges? My position is “It was the worst of novels. -

If citing, you are advised to consult the published version for pagination, volume/issue and date of publication The Powys Journal XXX (2020) “Limestone and the Literary Imagination: a world-ecological comparison of John Cowper Powys and Kamau Brathwaite” Chris Campbell, University of Exeter This paper represents an attempt to think through some of the connections – concrete and abstracted -- between the work of the Powyses, Caribbean literature, and world literary theory. It affords a chance to test out some theoretical approaches for reading literature of the English South West (often typified as local, provincial or even parochial) within a global, environmental framework. To begin, I want to introduce some of the salient features of world-ecological literary comparison: first, by recalling the most important and empirical textual link between the world of the Powyses and the Caribbean region (focussing in on Llewelyn Powys’s perception of the connections between the islands of Portland and Barbados); and then, by bringing into fuller dialogue the work of John Cowper Powys with that of Bajan poet and historian Kamau Brathwaite. I suggest that this pairing of authors opens up new ways of reading literary works and also produces new ways of comprehending the connected ecologies of the limestone formations of South Dorset (Portland’s quarries, say, or the chalk downland of the ridgeway and Maiden Castle) with the coral capped limestone outcrops of the Eastern Caribbean. -

The Powys Family Collection For thirty two years, C.F. Powys was Rector of Montacute, Somerset, and subsequently the Powys children would always regard the West Country as their home. Although the Powys were a strong and united family, it was the children’s sometimes anguished quests for separate identity that drew them into a remarkable variety of careers. John Cowper Powys the novelist, poet, philosopher, essayist and letter writer was the eldest child. Powys taught at schools in Sussex and then worked as a lecturer, all around England, for Oxford University's Extension Movement for Adult Education. In 1905 he began lecturing in the United States, where he was to remain for thirty years. He became famous as a writer, not only of novels but of essays and books of philosophy aimed at a wide readership. Powys's first publication was 'Odes and Other Poems' (1896); his first novel, 'Wood and Stone' was published in New York in 1915; this was followed by 'Rodmoor' in 1916. The first of his novels to bring him critical recognition was 'Wolf Solent' (1929), set around the Dorset-Somerset border. John Powys retired from the lecture circuit to a house in upstate New York, from 1930 he was a full-time writer. There he wrote two more novels set in the West Country, 'A Glastonbury Romance' (1933) and 'Weymouth Sands' (1934), as well as his 'Autobiography' (1934), regarded by many as among his best works and one of the most imposing autobiographies of the twentieth century. After returning to England in 1934, and writing 'Maiden Castle' (1937) while living in Dorchester, Powys moved to north Wales a year later and wrote his Welsh chronicles: 'Owen Glendower' (1940) and 'Porius' (1951). -

The magician, the ichthyosaurus-ego, the saint and the sadist are anthropomor• phized facets of what Powys felt was his own composite nature. Each has his own way of coming to terms with his environment. Then, I attempted to show that, in his novels at any rate, Powys's concern is artistic not philosophical or prophetic. He does not advocate one specific way of life such as that offered in In Defence of Sensuality. Only in the last few pages of A Glastonbury Romance does he eschew his per- sonae for a personal statement about the ineradicable nature of a certain kind of response to the universe. -

(When a quotation is involved, the passage is listed under the first word even if it is “a” or “the.”) It was first made available on the Internet and in booklet form in 2004, and has subsequently been updated and revised from time to time. The present version has been thoroughly reset and expanded. Numerous errors discovered in the intervening years have been corrected. All page-references are to Judith Bond and Morine Krissdóttir’s edition published by Overlook Duckworth in 2007, with those to Wilbur T. Albrecht’s 1994 edition from Colgate University Press following in square brackets. Since the latter contained many errors and inconsistencies, the words listed often appear there in somewhat different form. Moreover, because the editions are based on different copy-texts, some references appear only in one of the editions; when those occurring in only one version require separate annotation, they have been identified and glossed. Published in la lettre powysienne numéro 30, automne 2015 / printemps 2016, see : http://www.powys-lannion.net/Powys/LettrePowysienne/number30.htm “A craving old as the hills” Notes on Narrative Desire in John Cowper Powys’ Wessex Novels IN HER RECENT Feminist Narrative Ethics: Tacit Persuasion in Modernist Form Katherine Saunders Nash makes a highly fascinating major comment on narrative desire in A Glastonbury Romance. In her reading, JCP innovates on plot dynamics to create an “erotics of progression,” which calls for feminine reading practices, as opposed to the masculine models of narrative desire and reading associated with renowned literary critic Peter Brooks’ insights (Nash 117-121; 126-129). I find it impossible to do justice to the full implications of Nash’s conclusion—or to argue with it, for that matter—within the limits of the present article. Let me simply point out that as far as Glastonbury is concerned, I find the Brooksian model of narrative desire—with due respect to Brooks’ self-proclaimed limitations, as far as modernist texts are concerned1—not only applicable to JCP’s text, but also a very fruitful theoretical context for its interpretation. Indeed, in my reading elsewhere of Glastonbury, I tried to demonstrate how Powysian heroes—and the Powysian narrative—can be defined as narcissistic precisely because they keep evading the fulfilment of desire, the motive force of storytelling in Brooksian terms, and thereby are able to prolong narratives almost ad infinitum. That said, Nash’s provocative ideas made me take another look at the issue of narrative desire in Powys from a slightly different perspective—the novels’ own.
