    View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Helsingin yliopiston digitaalinen arkisto Form versus Matter: Miraculous Relics and Lenin’s Scientific Body Alexei Yurchak University of California, Berkeley This paper investigates the unique science of preservation that emerged around the task of maintaining Lenin’s body for public display in mausoleum in Moscow. It contrasts Lenin’s body to the incorruptible bodies of Christian saints (Catholic and Orthodox) and explores its role in the political history of the communist state. While the bodies of Christian saints are considered intact and incorruptible if their biological matter is relatively unchanged, even if their bodily form undergoes considerable change, in the case of Lenin’s body the relation of form to matter is reversed. This body is considered intact because its form (its shape and its dynamic characteristics that include the suppleness of skin, the flexibility of joints, etc) is preserved without change, while its matter is actively and continuously transformed and substituted with new inorganic materials. The unique materiality of this body, the paper argues, reveals previously unseen aspects of the Soviet political project. This analysis is based on ethnographic research in the mausoleum lab in Moscow, interviews with the lab’s scientists, and research in several Russian state archives. For the past 90 years Lenin’s body has been displayed in a perfectly preserved state in the Mausoleum in Moscow. Of these, the last twenty-five years have been marked by a heated public debate about that body’s future fate. The body has been blamed for all the ills of the country and celebrated as a symbol of its successes.

Silva, JCD, STL Judicial Vicar & Vice-Chancellor Introduction and Pretest The recent beatification of Pope John Paul II and the opening of the cause for sainthood, on a diocesan level, of Cora Louisa Yorgason Evans, a native of Utah, are giving us the opportunity to present a summary of the process of canonization according to the current Code of Canon Law and the particular pontifical laws regulating this type of procedures. This article would be divided in five parts. After a brief introduction and a pretest, we will be presenting in Part I, the significance of canonization; parts II and III will be dedicated to describe the steps of the process of canonization; part IV will deal with the importance of miracles in the process of canonization and part V will briefly describe the ceremony of canonization and some other conclusions. Let us begin with some questions: What should Catholics know about the Church’s process of canonization of saints? Has the Church always regulated the canonization process? Are there a number of steps before the official determination of sainthood?     Incorruptible saints Incorruptibility is the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox belief that divine intervention allows some human bodies (specifically saints and beati) to avoid the normal process of decomposition after death as a sign of their holiness. There are more than 250 incorrupt bodies of Catholic saints. Some examples: o Saint Agatha, whose body was discovered incorrupt in the 11th Century and whose body remains incorrupt today. She rejected the advances of a Roman prefect to maintain her virginity. She was imprisoned and tortured and was sentenced to death by burning at the stake in 251 AD, but was saved from this gruesome death by a mysterious earthquake. She later died in prison. o Saint Catherine LaBoure, to whom the Virgin Mary appeared in France in the year 1830 and who was directed to make the Miraculous Medal with the inscription “Oh, Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee.” Catherine died in 1876, and when her body was exhumed 56 years later in the course of her cause for canonization, her skin was unblemished, untouched by decomposition, and her eyes were just as blue as when she was alive. Her body lies in a glass coffin in Paris. She looks as if she is asleep, not dead. o Saint Bernadette Soubirous, to whom the Virgin Mary appeared in Lourdes, France, in 1858, died in 1879. Her body was exhumed 30 years after her death, in 1909, during the cause of her canonization. Her skin tone was natural and untouched by the taint of death. Her body, too, resides now in a glass coffin in Nevers, France, and she appears to be taking a nap.
