Founder and President of Pantheon Cultural Association, Lefkosia, Cyprus AREAS OF CONCENTRATION & RESEARCH INTERESTS Energy conservation and passive solar architecture. Promotion of bioclimatic architecture and solar energy. Solar Energy Education Through Art. History of Passive Solar in Cyprus. Passive Solar Design Considerations for the Mediterranean. Sustainable Architecture. Quality of life through sustainable design. Social Sustainability and Sustainable Development Technical Improvement of Existing Housing Envelopes in Cyprus A more thorough research is developed looking at: - Identification of the main problem in Cyprus - What is the actual standard for existing buildings (Needs in Cyprus). - Requirements in Cyprus that enforce a reaction to refurbish envelopes. - Legislative, natural (climatic boundary conditions) and other influencing factors that lead to the standard solution. Technical performances: stability, capacity, (earthquake), fire protection, noise insulation, weather protection, moisture protection, Functional / social performance: flexibility, comfort (thermal, acoustical, visual), health (air quality, mould & fungus growth) Economical performance: building costs, Running costs (heat losses, cooling, cleaning, inspection, maintenance, etc.) Environmental performance: use of resources (non renewable, renewable), energy consumption (non renewable, renewable) - production / assembly - heating / cooling Extensive Research on Passive Solar Architecture in Cyprus The aim of this research is to study the application of passive solar bodies and their adaptation on Cypriot houses focusing on heating and cooling passive solar systems in Cyprus, and making suggestions for their future applications. This study will assist future researches in choosing the most suitable combination from locally available construction materials so that more energy efficient buildings can be built, always taking into consideration the cost effectiveness of each passive solar system. Designing for Diversity Sustainability’s accountability to survival into the future is closely interlinked to diversity of species and functions in both animate and inanimate conditions. In anthropocentric 2 terms, diversity encompasses the presence and voice of men and women of all ages, ethnic backgrounds and social strata. Thus through diversity, sustainability can be attained only within a system where the voices of all participants carry equal weight. The scope of the research is to concentrate in a world of architecture where man and nature are addressed and sustained in a balanced design. The unit studio creates an interdisciplinary platform on which issues of environmental, social and economic sustainability are constantly explored. The unit prompts participants to develop critical positions regarding the principles of environmental and social sustainability and to extend and evolve these positions through the architectural design process.
