Social Sustainability and Sustainable Development

Technical Improvement of Existing Housing in Cyprus A more thorough research is developed looking at: - Identification of the main problem in Cyprus - What is the actual standard for existing buildings (Needs in Cyprus). - Requirements in Cyprus that enforce a reaction to refurbish envelopes. - Legislative, natural (climatic boundary conditions) and other influencing factors that lead to the standard solution. Technical performances: stability, capacity, (earthquake), fire protection, noise insulation, weather protection, moisture protection, Functional / social performance: flexibility, comfort (thermal, acoustical, visual), health (air quality, mould & fungus growth) Economical performance: building costs, Running costs (heat losses, cooling, cleaning, inspection, maintenance, etc.) Environmental performance: use of resources (non renewable, renewable), energy consumption (non renewable, renewable) - production / assembly - heating / cooling

Extensive Research on Passive Solar Architecture in Cyprus The aim of this research is to study the application of passive solar bodies and their adaptation on Cypriot houses focusing on heating and cooling passive solar systems in Cyprus, and making suggestions for their future applications. This study will assist future researches in choosing the most suitable combination from locally available construction materials so that more energy efficient buildings can be built, always taking into consideration the cost effectiveness of each passive solar system.

Designing for Diversity Sustainability’s accountability to survival into the future is closely interlinked to diversity of species and functions in both animate and inanimate conditions. In anthropocentric 2 terms, diversity encompasses the presence and voice of men and women of all ages, ethnic backgrounds and social strata. Thus through diversity, sustainability can be attained only within a system where the voices of all participants carry equal weight. The scope of the research is to concentrate in a world of architecture where man and nature are addressed and sustained in a balanced design. The unit studio creates an interdisciplinary platform on which issues of environmental, social and economic sustainability are constantly explored. The unit prompts participants to develop critical positions regarding the principles of environmental and social sustainability and to extend and evolve these positions through the architectural design process.

2000-present. Construction of an Experimental Solar House in Cyprus. 2000 The scope of the project is the 100% use of solar energy and the avoidance of mechanical devices for cooling and heating. It is the first grid-connected building in Cyprus producing

4 its own electricity, which is purchased by the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (E.A.C.). Lapithis, to ensure the successful completion of the project, put a team of Cypriot and foreign scientists and companies together. The project has been mentioned in specialized magazines and Internet sites. The Ministry of Education in Cyprus has issued a special announcement, which is distributed in Schools for the promotion of Solar Energy Conservation and is accompanied by seminars addressed by Lapithis. The Experimental House is visited by different schools, from Elementary to Secondary for a presentation and lecture on Solar Energy and Bioclimatic Architecture.

2004-2007. Cyprus delegate in the COST C16 project "Improving the quality of existing urban building envelopes”. European Union. Total 16 countries The main objective of the Action is to improve the quality of the urban building envelopes for the non-traditional housing stock, as well as to propose and disseminate new relevant methods and technical options to architects, engineers and planners. The corresponding step-by-step objectives are: - To survey and compare non-traditional dwellings in Europe related to their amount per type per country; for instance the top 2 per type per country. - To compare the engineering technologies used. - To assess the future demands for housing, sites and neighbourhoods and their effects for building envelopes. - To evaluate the possibilities for change in use and the limitations for such measures. - To develop new engineering technologies and techniques for better use. - To disseminate the gained results in order to assist in implementation.

2006-2009. Cyprus delegate in the COST C23 project “Strategies for a Low Carbon Built Environment project”. European Union. Total 16 countries The main objective of this Action is to investigate how carbon reductions can be achieved through appropriate design and management of the urban built environment. This will involve: · minimising energy use and associated emissions from buildings, · examining the indirect energy impacts of infrastructure developments. Carbon emissions are associated with the construction, refurbishment and operation of buildings. Sources of emissions relating to buildings include: · Direct emissions resulting from heating, lighting and ventilation of buildings. · Indirect including construction of buildings, transportation of people and materials, and in the treatment of water, waste and sewage.

RESEARCH & PUBLICATIONS Doctoral Solar Architecture in Cyprus: The aim of this research was to investigate the potential of the Dissertation: well-established principles of Passive Solar Design when applied to the specific cultural, economic and climatic contexts of Cyprus. The principal element of the study was the design, construction and monitored inhabitation of an Experimental Solar House in Lefkosia. In order to establish the parameters for this design detailed investigations for Cyprus were made on the climate, the terminal comfort, the energy economy, and the history of architecture. The best-known applications of passive systems are most suited for Cyprus. Through monitoring the Experimental Solar House from the 27/11/1999 until 18/12/2001, using computer data loggers. The results show that all heating requirements are satisfied by solar energy, while natural ventilation or ceiling fans meet all the cooling needs. The research concludes that Passive Solar Design may be successfully applied in the design of modern buildings in Cyprus.

22 Pantheon Founder and President. Involved in Fine Arts, Visual Arts, Film and Music, Solo Cultural Exhibitions, Group Exhibitions. First Non Governmental Organization organizing for the Association first time the yearly events: Experimental Film Festival, Experimental Sonic Arts, Urban 1999-now Soul Festival. The Association remains a non-profit organisation and offers its services to the public through no benefit of its own. Since 1999, the Pantheon Cultural Association made a commitment: to support all upcoming, young local artists, irrelevant of their field. Today, the association still truly believes that it’s artists themselves that will mark the cultural heritage of the island. As a non-profit organisation, the association started off by organising exhibitions, whether these where solo or group exhibitions, and quite quickly became known for its contemporary identity. Bearing its own exhibition space and facilities this soon lead the association to organise a selection of art events where works are created on a common ground. Whether these are poetry readings, musical events, book presentations, screenings, theme-based awareness events, performances, theatre, dance or workshops, the association stands with an open heart to suggestions and estimates itself capable of realising suggested concepts under its auspices. The Pantheon Cultural Association aims to bring together all forms of artists, performers, writers, musicians, film-makers and experimental creators in order to show their work and to introduce their creations to the Cyprus people.
