    The Diptera of Lancashire and Cheshire: Craneflies and Winter Gnats by Phil Brighton 32, Wadeson Way, Croft, Warrington WA3 7JS [email protected] Version 1.1 26 November 2017 1 Summary This document provides a new checklist for the craneflies and winter gnats (Tipuloidea, Ptychopteridae and Trichoceridae) to extend the lists of the diptera of Lancashire and Cheshire first published by Kidd and Bindle in 1959. Overall statistics on recording activity are given by decade and hectad. Checklists are presented for each of the three Watsonian vice-counties 58, 59, and 60 detailing for each species the number of records, year of earliest and most recent record, and the number of hectads with records. A combined checklist showing distribution by the three vice-counties is also included, covering a total of 264 species, amounting to 75% of the current British checklist. Introduction This report is the third in a series to update and extend the partial checklist of the diptera of Lancashire and Cheshire published in 1959 by Leonard Kidd and Alan Brindle1. There were two previous updates, in 19642 and 19713. The previous reports in this series cover the soldierflies and allies4 and the Sepsidae5, the latter family not having been covered in Ref 1. The reader is referred to the first two reports for the background and rationale of these checklists, as well as the history of diptera recording and available data sources. The description of methodology is also kept to a minimum in the present report: only significant differences from the previous publications will be outlined.

    Proposal: Development of an Identification Guide to Crane Fly (Insecta: Diptera: Tipulidae) Pests of Turfgrass in the Eastern U.S. Need for project: An ease of use identification guide is needed at this time by extension agents, turf grass care specialists and homeowners to separate the species of crane flies likely to be found associated with turf grasses, and focusing on the species implicated in causing turf grass damage. Background: The subgenus Tipula (Tipula) is an Old World group with two very similar introduced species in North America, the European Crane Fly, Tipula (T.) paludosa Meigen and the species T. (T.) oleracea Linnaeus, sometimes called the Common Crane Fly (Oosterbroek, 2005). Tipula paludosa is better known in North America, long established in the Pacific Northwest (Jackson and Campbell, 1975) and Canadian Maritimes provinces (Alexander, 1962), more recently in California (Umble and Rao, 2004; S. Gaimari, CDFA, pers. comm.) and is a leading insect pest of turf grass and pastures in these area. More recently, T. oleracea, has been discovered in the Pacific Northwest and California at a wide variety of localities and is considered established (Umble and Rao, 2004; S. Gaimari, CDFA, pers. comm.); it may have resided in these areas undetected for years and been mistaken for paludosa. It attacks a broad range of crops and is considered a major pest in Europe (Anonymous, 1967; Pesho et al. 1981). Tipula paludosa was discovered in Ontario in the late 1990’s at a wide variety of localities in southern Ontario, including Niagara Falls, and associated with turf damage (Pam Charbonneau, pers.

A. and Mrs. Cock- erell on their recent trip to Eastern Siberia have been submitted to me for determination. Because of the almost total lack of material and records from this region, the collection proved to be of excep- tional interest and furnished several important additions to the incomplete list of the Tipuloidea of Eastern Siberia. In addition to the species recorded in the following pages, Professor Cockerell writes me that he saw, but was unable to capture, a specimen of Ctena- croscelis mikado (Westwood) at Tsuruga, Japan. My sincere thanks are extended to Professor and Mrs. Cockerell, and to the National Museum authorities, for the privilege of studying this series of Tipu- lidae. The types and specimens of all other included species are preserved in the National Collection. In order that the known and probable components of the Tipulid fauna of Eastern Siberia may be more correctly understood, the following list of Regional Species is supplied. In addition, it may be well to indicate the occurrence of the European Dictenidia himaculata (Linnaeus) in this coastal province of Siberia, an enormous extension of the range of the species, which, however, has never been taken in Japan. Species richness of terrestrial and freshwater biota generally decreases with increasing latitude. Some taxa, however, show an anomalous species richness pattern in a regional or global scale. The aim of this study was to examine (i) regional variation in species richness, (ii) faunistic composition, (iii) occupancy, and (iv) proportions of different distribution types of Finnish crane flies. Analyses were based on incidence data pooled into 20 biogeographical provinces. Finnish crane fly fauna consists of 335 species; the provincial richness varies from 91 to 237. The species richness of all species and saproxylic/fungivorous species decreased with increasing latitude; mire-dwelling crane flies displayed a reversed pattern (Spearman’s correlations). Thirty-one species occupied a single province and 11 species were present in all provinces. Provincial assemblages showed a strong latitudinal gradient (NMS ordination) and faunistic distance increased with increasing geographical distance (Mantel test). Nearly half (48%) of the Finnish crane flies are Trans-Palaearctic, roughly one-third (34%) are West Palaearctic, and only 16 and 2% are Holarctic and Fennoscandian, respectively.

The present meaning, used here, is restricted to the super-family Tipuloidea (Order Diptera) which, for the past 20 years (Starý 1992), has been composed of four families - Tipulidae, Pediciidae, Cylindrotomidae and Limoniidae. I have tried to provide a firm basis for further work on craneflies in VC55, and to suggest what that work might be. There are voucher specimens for most, though not all, of the records and wherever there is only a single record, more records are needed to firmly establish that species on the county list. Pioneering work in Europe Before any meaningful lists of craneflies could be produced it was necessary to have fixed and unambiguous names for them. The genus-species naming system for doing this was first provided for the then-known craneflies by the 1758 volume of Linnaeus’s Systemae Naturae , published in Sweden, so this date provides a starting-point. Linnaeus named 14 of the more conspicuous craneflies on the British Checklist. Johan Christian Fabricius was a student of Linnaeus and did more work than his mentor on insects.

Many of the articles push forward our understanding of the craneflies, either through observations on ecology, or the taxonomic definitions of the different species. There are many suggestions where further work is needed and it is perhaps not surprising in the natural world that only about 350 species of craneflies can generate so many questions and so much interesting work. Records and Recording I am pleased to say that Pete Boardman will be taking over from me (JK) as the CRS Records Officer so please send your future records along to him. Many of you will know Pete for his work on Craneflies, his workshops and especially for his excellent Atlas of Shropshire Craneflies, the first issue of which has sold very well. Thanks to those of you who have already sent your 2017 records to me. I have passed some 2,000 of those on to Pete. Pete will be using iRecord as the default data entry method though of course records submitted in Excel spreadsheets continue to be very welcomed. iRecord is being used in response to the large number of people who are now using this method to enter records, and when he became verifier for Craneflies nationally there was a backlog of around 5,000 records on there waiting to be looked at. iRecord allows for photographs to be submitted alongside the record so this enables beginners to have their records verified with some degree of confidence, as well as for the correct re-identification of howlers.

Its preparation entailed an enormous amount of work to establish which of the localities in the border areas of Lithuania and mentioned in faunistic publications up to the Second World War are actually within the territory of presentday Lithuania. The second list of Lithuanian Diptera was published in 2000 (Pakalniškis et al. 2000). It included 2283 species. This list includes 3311 species of Lithuanian Diptera. The original idea of compiling the species list and of collecting together all the publications on the Lithuanian Diptera was that of the late Dr Saulius Pakalniškis. The infraorder Tipulomorpha has been compiled by Dr Sigitas Podėnas, the families Bolitophilidae, Ditomyiidae, Keroplatidae and Mycetophilidae by Dr Jolanta Rimšaitė, the families Psychodidae, Ceratopogonidae, Simuliidae, Chaoboridae and Dixidae by Dr Rasa Bernotienė, the superfamily Syrphoidea and family Tachinidae by Erikas Lutovinovas, and the families Trichoceridae, Fanniidae, Muscidae and Calliphoridae by Andrius Petrašiūnas.
