  • Evaluation of the Chemical Defense Fluids of Macrotermes Carbonarius
www.nature.com/scientificreports OPEN Evaluation of the chemical defense fuids of Macrotermes carbonarius and Globitermes sulphureus as possible household repellents and insecticides S. Appalasamy1,2*, M. H. Alia Diyana2, N. Arumugam2 & J. G. Boon3 The use of chemical insecticides has had many adverse efects. This study reports a novel perspective on the application of insect-based compounds to repel and eradicate other insects in a controlled environment. In this work, defense fuid was shown to be a repellent and insecticide against termites and cockroaches and was analyzed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC– MS). Globitermes sulphureus extract at 20 mg/ml showed the highest repellency for seven days against Macrotermes gilvus and for thirty days against Periplaneta americana. In terms of toxicity, G. sulphureus extract had a low LC50 compared to M. carbonarius extract against M. gilvus. Gas chromatography–mass spectrometry analysis of the M. carbonarius extract indicated the presence of six insecticidal and two repellent compounds in the extract, whereas the G. sulphureus extract contained fve insecticidal and three repellent compounds. The most obvious fnding was that G. sulphureus defense fuid had higher potential as a natural repellent and termiticide than the M. carbonarius extract. Both defense fuids can play a role as alternatives in the search for new, sustainable, natural repellents and termiticides. Our results demonstrate the potential use of termite defense fuid for pest management, providing repellent and insecticidal activities comparable to those of other green repellent and termiticidal commercial products. A termite infestation could be silent, but termites are known as destructive urban pests that cause structural damage by infesting wooden and timber structures, leading to economic loss.

2016 CHARITY GUIDE Maricopa County Combined Federal Campaign Maricopa County A Message from the Chair Maricopa County Combined Federal Campaign Dear Federal, Military and Postal Employees: Last year, Federal employees in the Maricopa County CFC carried on their tradition of generosity. You contributed more than $1.052 million, supporting more than 1,036 charities that respond to urgent needs in our community, our nation and the world. Thank you, and let’s continue our solid support of CFC. You worked to cure disease. You sheltered women and children from abuse. You fed the hungry. You clothed the homeless. You rescued animals. You protected the environment. You restored the lives of natural disaster victims at home and around the world. You supported federal, military, and postal employee families’ right here at home. On behalf of every man, woman and child who benefited from your generosity, please accept our heartfelt thanks. Despite our best efforts, there are still those among us who face overwhelming circumstances: life-threatening illness, poverty, despair. The 2016 CFC gives each of us an opportunity to really make a difference in whatever way we choose. And we can have confidence in our choices. Every charity in this listing was evaluated and approved for participation by Federal employees. The theme of this year’s Maricopa County CFC campaign is SHOW SOME LOVE. What charitable agency touches your heart? I’m sure there will be some CFC approved charities that will call out to you in a special way. LABORATORIES, LYCEUMS, LORDS: THE NATIONAL ZOOLOGICAL PARK AND THE TRANSFORMATION OF HUMANISM IN NINETEENTH-CENTURY AMERICA DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Daniel A. Vandersommers, M.A. Graduate Program in History The Ohio State University 2014 Dissertation Committee: Professor Randolph Roth, Advisor Professor John L. Brooke Professor Chris Otter Copyright by Daniel A. Vandersommers 2014 ABSTRACT This dissertation tells the story of how a zoo changed the world. Certainly, Charles Darwin shocked scientists with his 1859 publication On the Origin of Species, by showing how all life emerged from a common ancestor through the process of natural selection. Darwin’s classic, though, cannot explain why by the end of the century many people thought critically about the relationship between humans and animals. To understand this phenomenon, historians need to look elsewhere. Between 1870 and 1910, as Darwinism was debated endlessly in intellectual circles, zoological parks appeared suddenly at the heart of every major American city and had (at least) tens of millions of visitors. Darwin’s theory of evolution inspired scientists and philosophers to theorize about humans and animals. Public zoos, though, allowed the multitudes to experience daily the similarities between the human world and the animal kingdom. Upon entering the zoo, Americans saw the world’s exotic species for the first time—their long necks, sharp teeth, bright colors, gargantuan sizes, ivory extremities, spots, scales, and stripes. Yet, more significantly, Americans listened to these animals too. They learned to take animals seriously as they interacted with them along zoo walkways.

Figures and/or pictures may be missing from this format of the document. *** Abstract: Colony defense is a necessary but dangerous task for social insects, and nest defensive behaviors often lead to a premature death of the actor. As an extreme form of colony defense, self- sacrificial behaviors have evolved by kin selection in various social insects. Most self-sacrificial defensive mechanisms occur in response to an acute threat to the colony, but some behaviors are preemptive actions that avert harm to the colony. Self-sacrifice has also been observed as a form of preemptive defense against parasites and pathogens where individuals will abandon their normal colony function and die in self-exile to reduce the risk of infecting nestmates. Here, we provide an overview of the self-destructive defense mechanisms that eusocial insects have evolved and discuss avenues for future research into this form of altruism. Keywords: altruism | autothysis | defensive behavior | host suicide | sting autonomy | social insects | biology Article: Introduction Altruism, an action that will decrease the actor’s direct fitness to benefit a recipient, is the foundation of cooperation and cohesion in eusocial groups (Ratnieks and Wenseleers, 2008; O’Gorman et al., 2005; Oster and Wilson, 1978; Hamilton, 1964).

Moeliker, Curator of Birds, Natuurmuseum Rotterdam, The Netherlands Richard Wassersug, Professor, Department of Anatomy and Neurobiology, Dalhousie University, Halifax, Canada Redacted by Marc Abrahams, Editor, AIR Earlier this year, news reports described a sudden plague of exploding toads in Hamburg, Germany. The reports carried conflicting descriptions and speculation from scientists, governmental officials, passersby, and other authorities -- some said these were spontaneous explosions, some attributed them to attacks by killer crows, some to bacterial or viral action. Others advanced still more exotic theories. The public was left with a confused notion as to what exactly had happened, and how and why. To make sense of the reports, we assembled an international “dream team” -- three extraordinarily curious, determined scientists, each of whom has a deep background in one or more elements of the apparent story. Their assignment: to try to discover the truth about the exploding toads of Hamburg. Figure 2. • AGC………Autothysis Written 8-13-13
AGC………Autothysis By David Everson “Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.” Revelation 4:11 In the creation of “all things” God has designed animals with a whole host of self-defensive mechanisms. Some have hard shells, camouflage, speed, fierceness, stings, bites, shape changing abilities, and on and on we could go. But, there is a method of defense for the whole group that goes well above and beyond what we would normally believe possible. We know that Jesus taught that the greatest form of love would be to give up your life for someone else. “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” John 15:13 And there are thousands of cases during wartimes of brave men and women remaining behind to fight allowing comrades time to make a safe retreat. This is called altruistic behavior, when one member of a group places the safety and well being of the others ahead of their own. Let’s look at the ultimate from of altruistic behavior when a member of an animal group gives up its life to protect the group. This type of behavior is called autothysis. Let’s look at some animals that exhibit behavior. The word autothysis comes from the Greek roots autos- "self" and thysia -"sacrifice", and is defined as the process where an animal destroys itself via an internal rupturing or explosion of an organ which ruptures the skin.

The 2020 Combined Federal Campaign of the National Capital Area (CFCNCA) provides us an opportunity to Show Some Love for causes that are important to us. Thousands of organizations in the CFC look to us for support. They represent hundreds of causes, from hunger and healthcare, to animal welfare and injustice, to education and veterans. Here are a few examples of the positive impact you can have locally, nationally and internationally, when you join the CFC community: • $25 equips volunteer firefighters serving their community; • $58 covers one year of school fees and supplies for a child; • $200 trains a veteran to enter the civilian workforce. This is our campaign and our story. Together we give, volunteer and engage to raise critical funds for thousands of beneficiaries, whom we may never meet. When we help those in need, we help write their story to success; and in turn, write the story of our own philanthropic legacy. There is no better time to Show Some Love, wherever you are.
