During that period, the American and British cavalries encountered advancing technologies that threatened to change war and directly alter cavalry’s armament, tactics, and overall role. With airplanes as with bicycles and other new technologies, cavalry officers were cautious. Rather than uncritically embracing or rejecting new technologies completely, cavalrymen tested them before coming to conclusions. Cavalrymen cautiously examined the capabilities of airplanes, developed applications and doctrine for joint operations, and in the United States, even tried to develop their own specially designed aircraft. Airplanes promised to relieve the cavalry of low-priority missions, not threaten its existence. Instead of replacing the cavalry in the 1910s-1930s, airplanes worked cooperatively with cavalry in reconnaissance, security, communication, protection, and pursuit, a cooperation tested in maneuvers and officially blessed in both British and American doctrine. Just as cavalrymen became dependent on the close working relationship with airplanes in the 1920s-30s, this relationship altered drastically as aviation priorities and doctrine shifted to independent strategic bombardment from tactical support of ground troops. Airplane deployment and development began to overlook the missions of tactical support. The experiences and responses of American and British cavalrymen to airplanes differed. While the British cavalry was the older organization with a more established ii institution and traditions, it failed to mount a strong or lasting defense against the encroachments of the nascent aviation service into its reconnaissance and scouting roles. The American cavalry, despite its youth, contested the control of reconnaissance almost immediately in the 1910s and throughout the 1930s, decades after similar arguments ended in Britain. Please contact them directly if you wish to use their material. 1 Hello All An interesting article in the Times caught my eye a couple of weeks ago. Carrying the heading: ‘Dramatic boost for campaign to honour first black officer’, it covers the life of Walter Tull, a coloured professional footballer with Tottenham Hotspur and Northampton Town, who joined up in the ranks at the beginning of the War, enlisting in the 17th Battalion (1st Footballer’s), Middlesex Regiment as it came to be known, and was later commissioned, before being killed in March, 1918. The campaign referred to, asks the government to award him a posthumous Military Cross for his bravery, and indeed, he had been recommended for the MC for courageous acts undertaken some time before his death. But, one presumes that, given that a unit could only receive so many awards in a month, more meritorious acts were recognised, and so Walter Tull’s gallantry sadly went unrewarded. The award of a posthumous MC to a very brave man does sound like a nice idea, but in these specific circumstances is it not woolly-headed? Politically correct even? I think that it is both, and would set an unwelcome precedent. With the rationing of medals, whoever had to decide who should receive the six, shall we say, awards from ten recommendations had to make a judgement call, and these decisions were made at Brigade and Division level.

However, their common goal was opposition to Hamidian absolutism. Although the Young Turks were the heirs of the New Ottoman political tradition of constitutionalism and freedom —which were believed to be the final words in modernization by both factions— they did not come from the elite bureaucratic circles of the New Ottomans1. The Young Turks were the products of the modern secular, military or civilian professional schools. They «belonged to the newly emerging professional classes: lecturers in the recently founded government colleges, lawyers trained in western law, journalists, minor clerks in the bureaucracy, and junior officers trained in western-style war colleges. Most of them were half-educated and products of the state (high) schools. The well-educated ones had no experience of administration and little idea about running a government. There was not a single ex­ perienced statesman amongst them»12. The historical evidence at hand suggests that the great majority of the Young Turk cadres was recruited primarily from among the children of the petty-bourgeoisie.     A Composer Goes to War: E. J. Moeran and the First World War IAN MAXWELL Introduction Just over one hundred years ago, in the early morning of 3 May 1917, Lieutenant Ernest John Moeran, along with tens of thousands of other officers and men of the British and Australian armies, took part in what would later become known as the Second Battle of Bullecourt—a major effort by the Allied Command to break German resistance at the so-called Hindenburg Line. At some point during the morning, Moeran was injured, and the story of this injury and its consequences has evolved into a compelling and persistent narrative that has generally informed writing on the composer and his music.1 Moreover, the ordeals that he is believed to have endured during his wartime service have placed Moeran on a pedestal of circumstances that has engendered a sympathetic and favourable response to virtually every aspect of his later life and career. However, a comparative examination of the various accounts of Moeran’s experiences during the First World War exposes inconsistencies that raise suspicions regarding the reliability of much of the story.
