COURSE POLICIES Our Entry Level Open Water SCUBA course is based on your desire to go and have fun. To do this, you must get proper training so you can be certifi ed as well as qualifi ed. Schedule your IN-WATER ORIENTATION

The academics are home-study based and can be completed at your convenience and on-line. This leaves the instructor more time and energy to add value to your safety and enjoyment in ways that only an instructor can, such as answering questions, demon- strating skills and building great relationships.

Our goal is to turn each of you into a confi dent and capable SCUBA diver accepting responsibility for your own decisions and actions. To achieve that goal, we promise to work with you until you are comfortable enough to go diving in open water.

Come prepared to get in the water at every session.

Bring mask, snorkel, fi ns, booties, weighted belt, swimsuit and towel to each session

We can schedule a private orientation for $200

Page 10 www.harrysdiveshop.com | 504-888-4882 Minimum participation for a group class is 4 students paid.

After completing the SCUBA course, you will go to open water to display comfort and acceptance of responsibility as a soon-to-be qualifi ed and certifi ed SCUBA diver.

Open water checkout dives should be within 6 months of course completion. If beyond 2 months, we suggest you join one of our already scheduled sessions free of charge to refresher. If beyond 6 months, you must to get in the water with one of our scheduled sessions or arrange and pay for a refresher with an instructor.

If you do not complete all requirements for certifi cation within 1 year of originally signing the student folder, you start over from the beginning.

When you have completed both the SCUBA course and the open water dives, you qualify for the SSI (Scuba Schools Inter- national) internationally recognized, lifetime SCUBA certifi cation.

Your E-CARD is included in your completed certifi cation process. However, we recommend you purchase a plastic certifi cation card that can be used ONLY by you.

Ladies, please wear a 1-piece swimsuit or a shirt over your 2-piece suit.

Page 11 www.harrysdiveshop.com | 504-888-4882 Student divers are required to use SCUBA equipment from Harry’s Dive Shop until after certifi ed.

The In-Water Orientation AND Entry Level Open Water Course fee includes pool use of SCUBA equipment: tank, BC and regulator.

***

You provide mask, snorkel, fi ns, boots and weighted belt. (12# for ladies and 8# for men.) These items can be purchased at Harry’s Dive Shop where the selection is wide, prices competitive and professional assistance always available.

Complete the In-Water ORIENTATION and ALL home-study academics prior to beginning the SCUBA course itself. We have an on-site, heated, indoor, 16’ deep pool where you learn and practice your diving skills.

Classroom and pool sessions are held at each meeting. Our pool is 88°- 89°. Though this sounds warm, normal body is 98.6°. You may wish to purchase a wetsuit because open water is usually much cooler.

Minimum age for SCUBA certifi cation is 10. We only offer private SCUBA lessons to children 10 and 11 years of age. These divers are restricted to 40 ft. These children must have an immediate family member as their dive buddy for the open water certifi cation dives.

For children 12-14, the ratio of student to instructor (4:1 ratio) dictates a $100 upcharge. These children MUST have an adult family member or legal guardian ON-SITE during the open water dives.

Children 15-17 years of age MUST obtain parental or legal guardian signature to take the SCUBA course and go on the certifi cation trip.

Page 12 www.harrysdiveshop.com | 504-888-4882 MYTHS and MISCONCEPTIONS

Myth #1 SCUBA divers are prone to shark attack. Most animals are afraid of things they do not understand. The bubbles created by SCUBA equipment keep most under water animals away - including sharks. In one year, there were 31 dog attacks that resulted in death whereas there were only 4 fatal shark attacks – none of which involved SCUBA diving.

Myth #2 SCUBA diving is a dangerous sport. According to the National Safety Council: Injury Facts Edition (US and Canada), recreational scuba diving had only 88 fatalaties compared to 700 from boating, 3,200 from swimming, 33,100 from home injuries and 44,800 from motor vehicles.

Myth #3 If you are claustrophobic, SCUBA diving is not for you. Many who claim to be claustrophotic actually enjoy SCUBA diving in daylight and in clear water.

NEW FACT: According to world statistics,“selfi es” cause more deaths each year than sharks.

Page 18 www.harrysdiveshop.com | 504-888-4882 Suggested order for purchasing SCUBA Equipment and the reasons why.

To get certifi ed, you need mask snorkel, fi ns, boots, and maybe a wetsuit. To go to open water, you need a knife, gloves, whistle and SMB.

Next consider should be the Wetsuit and/or a Buoyancy Compensator (BC) because fi t, function and familiarity matter for safety, comfort and enjoyment. One size does NOT fi t all.

Owning a allows for familiarity, knowledge and confi dence which prevents confusion and potentially serious mistakes.

Even though one size DOES fi t most, owning your Regulator allows you to monitor its maintenance and constant whereabouts. After all, this is your life support system.

Accessories are endless - Have FUN collecting your dive goodies

The open water checkout is part of your SCUBA training and is designed to be fun yet still has requirements.

We typically go to Panama City Beach, FL and/or Vortex Springs in the Florida panhandle. The certifi cation fee covers your diving, instructor fees and e-certifi cation card. You may wish to purchase a plastic C-Card that only you can use.

Certifi ed divers and boat riders are welcome to join us on a space available basis and reduced rate.

Our plans are to make 2 dives from a boat in the Gulf of Mexico and 3 dives from shore in the springs. Unpredictable weather conditions can change plans.

Each open water student diver must have: mask, snorkel, fi ns, dive knife, gloves, whistle, *SMB, *adequate lead, logbook *regulator with gauges and power infl ator, *B/C with octopus, *2 full tanks each day, and *cold water wetsuit. *available for rent

Page 20 www.harrysdiveshop.com | 504-888-4882 Until after open water SCUBA certifi cation is complete, only SCUBA equipment from Harry’s Dive Shop may be used.

Each diver is personally responsible for reserving, transporting, maintaining, washing, and returning all rented dive equipment.

Rented equipment is due back on Monday.

The skills new divers are expected to do include but are not limited to mask removal, replacement and clearing, regulator removal, replacement and clearing, system removal and replacement, air sharing ascent, safety stops, control both with the power infl ator and oral infl ator, diver res- cue, navigation, snorkeling with surface dives and proper equip- ment maintenance.

For the purpose of certifi cation, new divers must make all dives under the direct supervision of an instructor, go no deeper than 60’ (kids 10 & 11 are limited to 40’ and must be with an adult diving relative), have no overhead obstructions, dive only in day- light hours and make no more than 3 dives per calendar day.

Page 21 www.harrysdiveshop.com | 504-888-4882 The Ears & Diving Swimmer’s Ear is a painful infection of the outer ear canal which runs from your eardrum to the outside of your head. It’s often brought on by moisture that remains in your ear thereby creating a an environment that aids bac- terial growth. Swimmer’s ear is also known as acute external otitis or otitis externa and is common among runners as well as swimmers. Swimmer’s Ear can be prevented by using ear drops immediately after the activity causing the ear canal to be wet. If an infection does occur, often it can be treated with cortico-steroid ear drops available from your local pharmacy. If an ear infection is allowed to persist or worsen, a trip to the doctor is highly advised.

Equalizing your ears is a skill that deserves attention and practice. The ear drum is no different than other body tissues: To make it fl ex without discomfort or pain, it must be exercised. Create an exercise or training regimen for your eardrum. For instance, when in a vehicle, equal- ize every time you come to a stop; red light, traffi c, stop light and when watching TV, equalize your ears during commercials or every couple of minutes. Additionally, though not recommended, who chooses to take medicine before diving should understand the warnings and precau- tions associated with the particular drug. This warrants a trial exposure of at least one or two days before diving. You need to know how your body responds or reacts to the drug before you couple it with diving. Equalize EARLY and OFTEN! If you cannot equalize, do NOT continue to descend.

Page 22 www.harrysdiveshop.com | 504-888-4882 LEAD WEIGHTS and YOU

There is NO magic formula for how much lead a SCUBA diver needs.

# 1 To learn how much lead your BODY requires to be neutral in the water, take a big breath, then a relaxed exhale (don’t blow out), hold lead in your lap and sit on your duff. You should sit lightly without fl oating back up. If not, add lead. If you sit heavily, subtract lead. If you have done this correctly, you should fl oat with a full inhalation and sink harder with full exhalation.

# 2 require more lead: Thicker suits and full length suits require more lead than thinner, short suits.

# 3 Consider the tank being used: Aluminum tanks start to fl oat at 1500 psi and get more buoyant as pressure drops. An empty or nearly empty 80 ft3 aluminum tank needs +3 lbs of lead to stay neutral in fresh water. Steel tanks always sink.

# 4 An XXL wetsuit of the same thickness as an XXS wetsuit will require more lead due to displacement dictated by physical size.

# 5 Put YOUR wetsuit in a mesh bag and add lead until it sinks slowly. After the suit is saturated (no more bubbles), you may be able to remove a little bit of lead.

# 6 When going from fresh water to salt water, multiply the total amount of lead by .25 and ADD that much. The opposite is true when going from salt to fresh water (multiply by .25 and SUBTRACT) Example: If you wear 8# in fresh water, add 2# for salt water.

# 7 Wetsuits compress at depth and become less buoyant but . . . you can add air to the BC: Remember to let it out on the way up

HINT: If you need 8# to be neutral but only have two weights weighing six lbs each, it is safer to dive with 12# than with six.

WRITE it in your LOGBOOK

Page 23 www.harrysdiveshop.com | 504-888-4882 The Importance of Buying Gear from Authorized Dealers

Owning represents a long-term investment in fun and safety. A good set of dive gear can last through years of diving and travel, create unforgettable experiences in incredible underwater environments and bring you home safely.

It is important to buy the right gear for the type of diving you plan to do, ensure that it fi ts and is comfortable, be trained in its use and keep it serviced at recommended intervals.

Dive gear is incredibly dependable, but it is life-support equipment, engineered to help you go where humans aren’t designed to go.

Each item of equipment has a specialized purpose. The aspects surrounding product education – fi t, function and service - may be as important to you personally as is the equipment itself.

It’s all part of the value equation and why it is important to buy your equipment only through authorized dealers.

Make an appointment or come to the shop and let us assist you in your equipment selection. Page 24 www.harrysdiveshop.com | 504-888-4882 When selecting equipment, you evaluate and choose the features you want. Buying your equipment is fun and it gets you diving with gear that does what you want it to do and how you want it done.

Buying your gear creates a great relationship with the dive store, your true connection to scuba diving. The store offers training opportunities, arranges trips, keeps you in contact with other divers and supports your equipment. Having your own equipment marks you as a committed diver and it encourages you to dive regularly and to stay involved.

The bottom line on equipment ownership: The way to achieve maximum enjoyment of this awesome activity is to be comfortable in your own “skin” and dive equipment.

Owning your dive equipment is an excellent investment in yourself and your diving future.

Page 28 www.harrysdiveshop.com | 504-888-4882 Each SCUBA Ranger needs mask, snorkel, fi ns, swimsuit, and towel.

Wetsuits are recommended for some children either for warmth or fl otation assistance … or both.

Kids should come to camp with their swimsuits on beneath their clothes.

Enhance your child’s imagination with the controlled and highly supervised awesome adventure of SCUBA diving through SCUBA Rangers: A nationwide program.

SCUBA Rangers is NOT a certifi cation course. These children do not learn , dive tables, dive computers, learn unconscious or take tests. SCUBA Rangers is all about fun and experience.

Getting SCUBA certifi ed involves much more work. Understanding, taking and passing tests plus going to open water for a minimum of 5 dives is required for certifi cation.

Parents unsure as to whether SCUBA div- ing is right for their children view SCUBA Rangers as a stepping stone toward eventual SCUBA certifi cation.

Speak with the Ranger Instructor for an opinion as to whether or not your child is ready to be SCUBA certifi ed.

Are you confi dent in your ability to safely control your ascent without holding onto a rope?

Divers NEED to be in control of their whereabouts at ALL times. To accomplish this, divers need to control their buoyancy.

Are you comfortable infl ating and deploying your SMB to send it up from depth making your underwater wherabouts known?

You’ll likely bounce up and down underwater before learning the seemingly elusive skill we call neutral buoyancy.

Learn to acquire and safely maintain “fi sh position” throughout your dive even while working with the SMB and reel.

Oxygen is the most aggressive and widely accepted First-Aid known for SCUBA related accidents. Be comfortable in its use and application.

OUR EXPERIENCE: While in the Gulf of Mexico on the Mark Se7en CCR, we had the most pleasurable and exciting of experiences with marine life that otherwise would have run scared from noisy bubbles. We co-existed with the largest sea turtle on earth (shell the size of a car’s hood with barnacles like tangerines) and scratched the heads of three different octopi. Then, while hanging in silence on the down line at the Oriskany, Ssunken aircraft carrier, watching the activity of humans and fi sh below, the peace and underwater worldly connectedness was awe inspiring. WOW!

MOST RECENTLY: On a certifi cation dive trip, a CCR instructor/diver stayed underwater a whopping 197 minutes while open water students were escorted down the line for their dive and back up thereafter. As soon as the bubble blowers left, the local marine life (schools of fi sh) came back out of hiding. It was an utterly amazing experience for everyone; fi sh and divers alike.

Page 38 www.harrysdiveshop.com | 504-888-4882 Extended Range aka Technical Diving

Extended Range / Technical Diving is defi ned as: exceeding 130’ depth, making planned decompression stops, traveling more than 130 linear feet into an overhead environment or a combination thereof.

Full technical diving is an equipment AND skill intensive endeavor. Considerable academic sessions and in-water prac- tice of skills are necessary.

Entering the extended range realm of diving is a big commit- ment. Most important is the mind-set in the form of self-suffi ciency and situational awareness.

True technical divers are not bragging risk takers; instead, they are fully aware of their capabilities and limitations. They train for the diving excursion and equip themselves accordingly.

Page 40 www.harrysdiveshop.com | 504-888-4882 Who is Harry?

Harry Caldwell, founder of Harry’s Dive Shop in 1971, was born, raised, married and started his family in Knoxville, TN where he was a lineman for the telephone company. After Hurricane Audrey decimated lower Plaquemines Parish in 1957, Harry was transferred to assist in its rebuilding. While his family stayed in Tennes- see, Harry worked in Louisiana and found SCUBA a worthy activity to occupy his mind, body, spirit and time.

Harry taught SCUBA at the Downtown Lee Circle YMCA and the New Orleans Athletic Club (NOAC) in the early 1960s, before certifi cation was offered. Harry was instrumental in teaching local fi re and police departments the fundamentals of scuba diving in the event of need.

Upon Harry’s retirement from the phone company, he opened Harry’s Dive Shop, originally located on Metairie Road. He believed SCUBA would become a sport worthy of education and training.

Harry was a pioneer in the sport in more ways than education; he led trips to Central America in the early 70’s, before international travel became popular. Harry’s ideals and dreams continue to thrive through family, friends, and trusted employees. Join us!

We invite you to become a valued team member of Harry’s Dive Shop, the oldest and largest full service dive shop in the Gulf South.

Both Harry and Cindy, father and daughter, are SSI Platinum Pro Divers.

Founded in 1980 and associated with Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina, DAN serves as a lifeline for the scuba industry by operating the world’s only 24-hour Diving Emergency Hotline for injured divers.

DAN operates a medical information line for divers, conducts vital dive medical research and develops and provides First-Aid and other continuing education programs for everyone from beginning divers to medical professionals.

Membership dues and donations support DAN, coming togeth- er to create the largest association of recreational divers in the world. Page 44 www.harrysdiveshop.com | 504-888-4882 Learning to Swim The American Pediatric Association is concerned with parents having a false sense of security with regard to young children who learn to swim very quickly, such as an everyday class for a few weeks, followed by nothing.

Our 30 minute classes, same day, same time each week, offer just enough time to catch the swimmer’s attention and still not tire him or her out too much.

The progression of new swimming skills is reinforced through weekly repetition. Swimmers retain their new- ly learned skills longer when they use them regularly. A routine makes swimmers more comfortable and more confi dent in the water.

Historical records indicate that Alexander the Great not only sent divers down to remove obstacles in the City of Tyre’s harbor (now called Lebanon), which he took under siege in 332 BC, but also went underwater, himself, to view the progress of their work.

Times have changed considerably and so has the equipment available to scuba divers today . . .
