Supplemental Information All specimens used within this study are housed in: the McGuire Center for Lepidoptera and Biodiversity (MGCL) at the Florida Museum of Natural History, Gainesville, USA (FLMNH); the University of Maryland, College Park, USA (UMD); the Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle in Paris, France (MNHN); and the Australian National Insect Collection in Canberra, Australia (ANIC). Methods DNA extraction protocol of dried museum specimens (detailed instructions) Prior to tissue sampling, dried (pinned or papered) specimens were assigned MGCL barcodes, photographed, and their labels digitized. Abdomens were then removed using sterile forceps, cleaned with 100% ethanol between each sample, and the remaining specimens were returned to their respective trays within the MGCL collections. Abdomens were placed in 1.5 mL microcentrifuge tubes with the apex of the abdomen in the conical end of the tube. For larger abdomens, 5 mL microcentrifuge tubes or larger were utilized. A solution of proteinase K (Qiagen Cat #19133) and genomic lysis buffer (OmniPrep Genomic DNA Extraction Kit) in a 1:50 ratio was added to each abdomen containing tube, sufficient to cover the abdomen (typically either 300 µL or 500 µL) - similar to the concept used in Hundsdoerfer & Kitching (1). Ratios of 1:10 and 1:25 were utilized for low quality or rare specimens. Low quality specimens were defined as having little visible tissue inside of the abdomen, mold/fungi growth, or smell of bacterial decay. Samples were incubated overnight (12-18 hours) in a dry air oven at 56°C. Importantly, we also adjusted the ratio depending on the tissue type, i.e., increasing the ratio for particularly large or egg-containing abdomens. -

The superfamily includes many model organisms, but the taxonomy and classification of the superfamily has remained largely in disarray. Here we present a global checklist of Bombycoidea. Following Zwick (2008) and Zwick et al. (2011), ten families are recognized: Anthelidae, Apatelodidae, Bombycidae, Brahmaeidae, Carthaeidae, Endromidae, Eupterotidae, Phiditiidae, Saturniidae and Sphingidae. The former families Lemoniidae and Mirinidae are included within Brahmaeidae and Endromidae respectively. -

DUKE Abstract: A historical review is given of the taxonomic placements of the genus Spiramiopsis and of the previous records of the immature stages and larval foodplants of its sole species, S. comma H am pson . The only confirmed larval foodplants of the species are twining asclepiads of the genus Secamone. The entire life history and all immature stages of S. comma are described and illustrated, including the chaetotaxy of the first-instar larva. The larva and pupa of S. comma are compared with those of other bombycoid families having larvae with dorsal processes, viz. Brahmaeidae, Lemoniidae, Bombycidae, Saturniidae, Sphingidae and Mirinidae, to assess whether S. comma agrees with any of these in preimaginal characters and whether any such agreements are structurally identical. Spiramiopsis is placed in the latest phylogenetic classification system of the Bombycoidea (M inet 1994) according to its preimaginal characters, where it comes near the Lemoniidae and Brahmaeidae but is not traceable to any specific family. -

NÄSSIG & Stefan NAUMANN Summary: The authors intend to write chapters on different families of Bombycoidea for a volume of the new book series “Pa- laearctic Macrolepidoptera”, to be published by Apollo Books. The families covered are Saturniidae (ca. 150 species), Brahmaeidae (including the former family Lemoniidae, ca. 20 species), Endromidae (1–2 species) and Eupterotidae (ca. 77 species). Phylogenetic and systematic issues concerning the classification of these families are shortly discussed. KIRIAKOFF (Gand) PRÉFACE Le nombre des Lépidoptères « Hétérocères » récoltés au Parc National de l'Upemba par la Mission G. P. de Witte en 1947-1949 et se rapportant aux groupes étudiés dans la présente contribution se situe aux environs de 2.000, et le nombre des formes mentionnées dans les pages qui suivent est de 253. Si l'on tient compte du fait que ces 253 formes se répartissent entre tous les grands groupes des « Macrohétérocères >>, sauf les Geometroidea, on concevra aisément que la présente étude doive forcément se réduire, en ordre principal, à une liste commentée des captures et aux descriptions des formes nouvelles. Malgré le nombre restreint de formes récoltées, la présente étude n'est pas sans signification, par suite du fait que le matériel « Hétérocères » rapporté par la Mission G. F. de Witte, du Parc National de l'Upemba, dépasse de loin en importance ce qui avait été fait dans ce domaine parti¬ culier par les missions précédentes aux Parcs Nationaux. Based on DNA sequences of the fusion protein carbamoylphosphate synthetase/aspartate transcarbamylase/dihydroorotase (CAD; 680 bp) and elon- gation factor-1a (Ef-1a; 1240 bp); the first molecular phylogeny of the moth family Anthelidae and its placement within the Bombycoidea sensu Brock (1971) (¼ bombycoid complex sensu Minet, 1994) is proposed. The results strongly support the monophyly of the family Anthelidae and its subfamilies Munychryiinae and Anthelinae, but demonstrate the vast polyphyly of its main genus Anthela Walker, 1855. The proposed phylogeny suggests that grass feeding, as apparent from some pest records, probably is an ancestral trait within the subfamily Anthelinae. Evolutionary relationships of the family Anthelidae and of most parts of the Bombycoidea remain obscure. However, the results contradict many of the widely accepted phylogenetic hypotheses within the Bombycoidea proposed by Minet (1994: Entomologica scandinavica, 25, 63–88). The Brahmaeidae are paraphyletic relative to the Lemoniidae (syn.nov.), and the current concept of Bombycidae is polyphyletic, with the bombycid subfamily Apatelodinae being part of a mono- phylum comprising Brahmaeidae / Lemoniidae, Eupterotidae and Apatelodidae (stat.rev.).
