  • Tunnels, Deeper, Freefall, and Closer by Roderick Gordon and Brian Williams
READING GROUP GUIDE Tunnels, Deeper, Freefall, and closer by Roderick Gordon and Brian Williams Enter the terrifying world of Tunnels—a subterranean society under the streets of modern London, whose citizens are enslaved by a strange, cruel sect, the Styx, who plan to exterminate all Topsoilers. Can fourteen-year-old Will defeat the Styx, and rescue his missing father? Roderick Gordon and Brian Williams first met at college in London and have remained friends ever since. Gordon, a former investment banker, now lives with his wife and children in Norfolk, England; Williams, an installation artist, inhabits the city’s Hackney neighborhood, accompanied everywhere by his invisible dog. About their writing process, Gordon says: “When I lived in London, my house was only a ten-minute bike ride from where Brian lived, so he’d cycle round and we would work on Tunnels at my kitchen table. When I moved with my family to the country, we discussed Deeper over many late-night phone calls, and swapped sections by email. When I visit London we go to a couple of favorite cafés. They’ve gotten used to us and know that we can make a cup of coffee last several hours!” Tunnels A New York Times Bestseller About the book He’s a loner at school, his sister’s beyond bossy, and his mother watches TV all day long, but at least Will Burrows shares one hobby with his otherwise weird father: They’re both obsessed with archeological sites. When the two discover an abandoned tunnel buried below modern London, they think they’re on the brink of a major find.

YOUNG Under the direction of Amira Jarmakani ABSTRACT Using textual analysis of 49 young adult paranormal romances, I answer what is it about the cultural milieu that makes these novels popular right now? This thesis argues that the discourse which emerges from the novels reflects contemporary discourse and narrative about the girls and young women who read this genre and who place themselves within this discourse and narrative. The novels respond to this discourse by offering instances where the girls’ ideologies, built on the discourses taught to them, can be temporarily restored when the narrative proves false. These novels also undermine the confining discourse which the girls find themselves stuck in.

Kieda, Dean of The Graduate School. ABSTRACT Certain types of literature have been heavily studied for their relevancy to the environment, but fantasy literature has been left out of this critical discussion. Ecocriticism of fantasy literature has been dismal, despite the popularity of the genre. I argue that fantasy resonates so strongly with our current era because of what it offers that the Anthropocene lacks. Urban fantasy literature epitomizes this. In urban fantasy, readers can become re- enchanted with their everyday lives, and open their perspectives to include the more-than- human world that surrounds them. In urban fantasy, readers can experience the more-than- human community in a salient way, with more-than-human beings and forces interacting, communicating, and serving as agents.

O’Donnell Professor PhD Thesis Examination Committee Member Aaron Taylor Associate Professor PhD Thesis Examination Committee Member Goldie Morgentaler Professor PhD Chair, Thesis Examination Committee ii Abstract Fanfiction is the practice of fans writing stories using the world and/or characters of an established work of fiction in order to rework this material. This thesis examines the relationship between fanfiction and digital self-publication within the popular fiction genre of urban fantasy. Emerging technologies in digital publishing have created a new world for authors and readers alike. Online publishing companies make it possible for any author to self-publish an ebook and distribute it through a global platform without an agent. The practice of writing fanfiction connected with urban fantasy has combined with the relative ease of digital self-publication to create an environment within which many new authors can explore non-traditional forms of publication. While all genres have access to this possibility, I suggest that urban fantasy is one of the few that is poised to revolutionise the publication industry due to its historical connection with digital fanfiction.
