7th Grade Summer Reading 2018 (Listed by author) Please read five books this summer. Three books must be from this list. The other two are books of your choice. This list (along with a guide that shows all the titles in each series, a list of summer reading activities, and a reading log) will be available on the summer reading page of the library website (http://matthews.saccds.org). Use the reading log to record and rate all the books you read over the summer. Use the Summer Reading Activities list to choose something to do along with one of your books. Complete the task and email us with a summary, photo, video, etc. of what you did, and we’ll put it on our Summer Reading webpage and enter your name in the contest.     A Teacher’s Guide to The Leviathan Trilogy By Scott Westerfeld About the Trilogy It is the cusp of World War I. The Austro-Hungarians and Germans have their Clankers, steam- driven iron machines loaded with guns and ammunition. The British Darwinists employ genetically fabricated animals as their weaponry. Their Leviathan is a whale airship and the most masterful beast in the British fleet. In this striking, futuristic rendition of an alternate past where machines are pitted against genetically modified beasts, Aleksandar Ferdinand, a Clanker, and Deryn Sharp, a Darwinist, are on opposite sides in the war. But their paths cross in the most unexpected way, and together they embark on an around-the-world adventure, one that will change both their lives forever. In addition to the three novels, there is The Manual of Aeronautics, a lavishly illustrated, full- color companion. The Manual of Aeronautics is a guide to the inner workings of the Darwinist and Clanker powers. Loaded with detailed descriptions and elaborate illustrations of Darwinist beasties and Clanker walkers, weapons, transport, and uniforms, this manual highlights the international powers that Deryn and Alek encounter throughout their around-the-world adventures. This guide draws back the curtain and reveals the inner depths of Westerfeld’s fascinating alternative world. Book 1: Leviathan About the Novel Prince Aleksander, would-be heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, is on the run. His own people have turned on him. His title is worthless. All he has is a battle-torn war machine and a loyal crew of men. Deryn Sharp is a commoner disguised as a boy in the British Air Service.

    6th Grade SummerReads The Pike School Summer 2014 “Mythical Beast” Charlie Domina Class of 2023 Dear Sixth Grade Families, Welcome to this year’s edition of Pike's SummerReads. This list encompasses a wide variety of genres and formats, from classics, historical fiction and fantasy to graphic novels and science fiction. SummerReads is updated annually with the best new titles from every genre. By the opening of school in September 2014, each 6th grade student should have read four books, as outlined below. Incoming 6th graders must read: • the required book for English, The London Eye Mystery by Siobhan Dowd • two books from this reading list, and • one book of their own choosing. Please complete all these reading requirements before the start of school, and bring the required title to school in September. In the fall, students will participate in activities that celebrate their summer reading and launch their journey as Upper School English students. NEW THIS SUMMER – students will be able to check out Pike library books! The library will be open from 8 – 11 a.m. on June 25th and August 6th for families to bring their child(ren) to browse and check out books. Full details are available on the library web site.
