PG14 Read the magazine online at www.hopton-on-sea-parish-council.norfolkparishes.gov.uk Drugs at Hopton

Very rarely does our small village get major press and social media coverage, but it certainly did when drugs with a street value of £50M were washing up on Hopton's beach in February.

National Crime Agency officers were called to investigate the discovery of around 360 kilos of cocaine that had washed up on Hopton beach, with ore parcels discovered washed ashore at Caister and Kessingland. Police and Border Force officers initially attended the scene and secured the holdalls that contained cocaine.

The total amount of suspected cocaine seized is estimated to be around 360 kilos, which if cut and sold on the streets could have had a potential value of upwards of £50 million.

The Friends of old St. Margaret's Ruin

Inside the ruins work on the floor at the western end has been completed and the floor at the eastern end has been cleared of debris ready for grass seeding.

In the Millennium Gardens the rose bed has been weeded and dug over. The small bed has been tidied up and edged. In the orchard area the tree pits have been weeded. Two of our volunteers have generously funded the replacement for an apple tree that died last year.

A Hopton resident has kindly donated several shrubs that have now been planted along the back border.

Hopton on Sea Youth Club

Firstly this month, we have to begin to say how desperately sad we were to hear of the passing of Wendy Hicks. Wendy, and her husband Ken, have been huge supporters of the Youth Club from the day it started. In 2013 Wendy celebrated a special birthday and very kindly asked for donations instead of presents; the outcome of this was that over £500 was raised for our club. Together with another extremely generous donation we received at the time, this enabled us to purchase our main pool table, craft material and other items that were required at the time. The pool table is still going strong and is very rarely seen not being used on a Friday evening.

Secondly, we have to say a huge thank you to Marion Hardisty. After starting the Youth Club, and working tirelessly as Chairperson until 2016, Marion has decided it is time to step down as a volunteer from our club. We will miss her dearly on Friday evenings. We wish you well Marion, and hope you enjoy some very much deserved relaxation time.

We will be sending a form home with all our members, asking you to update your contact details. This will enable us to get in touch with everyone quickly, and at short notice, if required. Extra forms can be obtained from the Village Hall entrance on Friday evenings, or by contacting us direct.

We welcome ideas of activities that the youngsters would like us to look into. We have had music evenings, karaoke nights, birds of prey and games nights. If you have any suggestions with similar events, please let us know. We are open on Friday evenings in the village hall during school term times, from 7pm until 9pm, and membership is open to youngsters from Hopton, Corton and Blundeston, currently Year 5 up to 17 years of age. All our senior volunteers are DBS checked.

Please contact Liz or Karen on the numbers below. Alternatively, you can call in to see us at the Village Hall. Contacts: Liz: 07729 093748 Karen: 07412 941276
