HOPTON SCHOOL CELEBRATES OFSTED SUCCESS

The community of Hopton Church of England Primary School is celebrating the result of their latest Ofsted inspection, which judged the school 'Good' overall and 'Good' in all areas of school life.

The Ofsted Team, found that there has HOPTON VILLAGE HALL been much improvement since the previous inspection, when it was judged TUESDAYS as requiring improvement. 5.30PM & 7.30PM In their report, which was published in FOR MORE INFORMATION F e b r u a r y, O f s t e d s a i d t h a t t h e CALL DEBBIE ON improvement had been the result of the 07551 975800 “ t i r e l e s s d e t e r m i n a t i o n o f t h e headteacher, other senior leaders and the governing body to raise standards”. They also noted that the quality of teaching and learning has substantially improved, meaning that pupils now achieve well across the school. This is because teachers have high expectations of the children, they have good subject knowledge and children are enthused by the level of challenge in their lessons.

“Improvements in the curriculum mean pupils are more interested in writing than previously”. “Mathematics is taught well and pupils' progress in the subject shows good improvement.” “Throughout the school, pupils who have special educational needs and/or disabilities make good progress because they benefit from effective support.” “Pupils behave well because that is what is expected of them at all times. There is a shared understanding that the school community is caring and respectful to all.” “Pupils enjoy school and want to do well”.

Head teacher, Christabelle Whiteley-Tye, is delighted with the outcome: “This is the culmination of a lot of hard work, commitment and dedication by staff, governors, parents and not least the children, to ensure that we always aim high and we all strive to be the best that we can be. This is an important milestone in our journey of continuing improvement and our focus will be to maintain and improve standards and opportunities even further”.

“We certainly won't be standing still and we've already put in place strong plans for raising our standards further for the most able and disadvantaged pupils, setting wider challenges for our pupils within 'topic' work and to further improve the accurate use of handwriting, grammar, spelling and punctuation. I'm sure the whole school community will work with us to help us achieve these goals. “

Emma Plane, Chair of Governors, is delighted with Ofsted's report and that the school is giving the children of Hopton's community the education they deserve so they can fulfil their potential and have the best possible chance to take advantage of opportunities in the future. Our speaker this afternoon was well known local Naturalist Tony Brown who armed with screen and slides gave us a fascinating talk on fauna flora bird and wildlife to be found around Lound Lakes. Tony has taken some amazing shots and we heard the stories behind these pictures. Who would have thought practically on our doorstep we could see Ospreys Heron Swallows woodpeckers kingfishers Canada Geese reptiles Muntjacks exotic butterflies huge slugs and cannibal ladybirds to name but a few !! Wild orchids, tufted vetch, primroses funghi, some deadly, were just some of the other examples. We are indeed so fortunate to have such a beautiful wild haven to visit right on our doorsteps and it now is a must to visit for many of our members. Applause and thanks to Tony for a very enjoyable talk.

Competion winners were Pam for flower of the month Daffodil and Unusual Photo Frame Iris. Next month competitions are flower of the month and small hand knitted garment. Laura Frosdick

Local Hopton Vocalist Laura Frosdick has been selected to take the lead role in a WW2 show that is taking East Anglia by storm. The show is called sights and Sounds of WW2. Laura will be singing many of the hit songs from WWW2 and the Blitz and some of the big band favourites with a special tribute to Dame Vera Lynn who is celebrating her 100th year. Hopefully the show will provide thought provoking memories from the big screen as real photographs of the 1939 – 45 era are put into video format, which may make you laugh and cry, harrowing scenes have been excluded. The show is both musical and educational. A wide spectrum of images from all walks of life in the conflict that was World War Two. This is a show that nobody else is doing, a real niche due to the imagery on the big screen with the added vocal performances. At the moment Laura is studying Musical Theatre at Colchester University and is soon to start on her last year. Laura also sings in various gigs locally with a tribute act to Diva's of the 50's & 60's.

Her first performance is on Sunday 18th June (Fathers Day) at the Pavilion Theatre, Gorleston so please come along and give her some support. Treat your Dad, Grandad Brother, Uncle or Nephew in what appears to be a brilliant show.

The Friends of old St. Margaret's

The glorious spring weather at the beginning of the month showed the gardens at their best. It made all the hard work of our volunteers really worthwhile. However nothing lasts forever and we were soon deadheading the spring bulbs as they faded. Likewise as the wonderful display of snowdrops shed their blooms we continued the practice of splitting the clumps up to provide a more naturalised display beneath the oak trees by the gate.

In the orchard the apple trees are in good heart now that we are able to give them more attention. Despite an early mowing the small collection of snakeshead fritillary have survived to complement the daffodils scattered between the apple trees. Following the departure of GYPT at the end of August 2016 the landscaping work has given us plenty to do clearing building debris and creating an attractive setting inside the ruins. We finally completed the work this month.
