It Happened on The The Bear Facts The Hiistory.. “I met her on the beach at Bali Bali” from the year 1936 and written by Al Sherman (On a Little Bamboo Bridge), Jack Maskill and Abner Silver. I suppose it was the ‘Tin Pan Alley’ inspired ‘ Jump on the Bandwagon’ phiosophy that spawned this song about nowhere really. As Bali Bali SOUNDED Polynesian I sup- pose they almost got it right. This song is now quite popular in Japan and is out on the Harlequin label HQCD-187 :- Broadway’s Gone Hawaii, the track was recorded on the 9th of 2 June 1936 in New York by Tommy Dorsey and sung by Edythe Wright. Also in 1936 it was recorded by Bob Crosby’s Bobcats The words... with Connee Boswell, who, gained the most airpaly and sales. Amongst quite a few others who rushed to It Happened on the Beach at Bali Bali record this popular song of the day were :- Henry ‘Red’ Allen, Bunny Berigan, Sy Oliver, & Jimmie Lunceford & It Happened on the beach at Bali Bali His Orchestra. I found her dreaming on the golden sands later to be rocorded by Primo Scala & His Accordion It Happened on the beach at Bali Bali Band, Felix Mendhlessohn, Frank Chacksfield, et al. And it wasn’t long ‘till we were holding glands And while we strolled along the beach together We kissed and then she promised to be mine You could’ve knocked me over with a feather When she told me that she came from Caroline. The day I sailed across the ocean To fine romance across the sea I never had the slightest notion I’d meet the girl who used to live next door to me And now we own a cottage in the valley A cosy little nest that’s hers and mine 1 It Happened on the beach at Bali Bali And ended up way down in Caroline The Tab... Whether Jerry Byrd “Invented” the C6th tuning is debat- able, but his formulation and development of the C6/A7 combination tuning is beyond doubt, so, In deference to a past master I’ve tabbed an old standard in HIS tuning. 3 There is nothing particularly difficult in the tab, but i’ve included fingering for the first time. I felt it was essential to indicate not only the correct frets but the correct finger combinations for, in particular, the ‘Chromatic’ runs. In real- ity just a set of cliffs and peaks that were used in the film ‘South Pacific’ as the imaginary off-shore Island. In the movie, Bali Hai was the island in the dis- tance that was forbidden to the American sailors. The movie makers didn't have an island near enough (or breathtaking enough) to use, so they just used these moun- tains. If you visit Kauai, be sure to rent the video either before or after your visit. It is amazing how little the island has changed in the 40 years since the movie was made Kauai Picture by Linda Garrison Whilst one could easily stroll along the sands of the beach at Hanalei Bay, it would be quite painful if you tried to do so on the beach at Bali Bali. (Again a semi imaginary place) Located on the island of Bali in Indonesia and spared the devas- tation of the 2004 December 26th Tsunami by the Islands off Sumatra and Java. The song was a hit by Connee Boswell with Bob Crosby’s ‘Bobcats’ One of the finest jazz singers of the 1930's, Connee (who was always cited by Ella Fitzgerald as her main early influ- ence) originally rose to fame as a member of the Boswell Sisters, one of the premiere jazz vocal groups. They started out singing on a local radio broadcast. The three became internationally famous by the mid 1930s and even performed for the Queen at Buckingham Palace. After the trio disband- ed Conneel became an even bigger star. During her heyday, she appeared in concerts, Broadway shows, and films. She also had many hit records and did several duets with Bing Crosby. When Boswell was four she suffered polio and was confined to a wheelchair. In public she usually appeared seated in an elevated wheelchair and wore a gown designed to make it seem as if she were standing. 16.

Cornet Chop Suey – Biographies The Cornet Chop Suey Jazz Band has enjoyed a meteoric rise in popularity since its arrival on the jazz scene in 2001. The band's unique front line with Brian Casserly on trumpet, Tom Tucker on cornet, Jerry Epperson on reeds and Brett Stamps on trombone is driven by a powerful rhythm section consisting of Paul Reid on piano, Al Sherman on bass and John Gillick on drums. Best known for a wide variety of styles, Cornet Chop Suey applies its own exciting style to traditional jazz, swing, blues and "big production" numbers. Every performance by Cornet Chop Suey is a high-energy presentation and is always a memorable experience for the audience. Named after a somewhat obscure Louis Armstrong composition, Cornet Chop Suey now has six CD's available. The "St. Louis Armstrong" CD includes many of the tunes performed in the special Louis Armstrong show. The band is in great demand at jazz festivals, jazz cruises, conventions and concerts around the country. Brian Casserly, who also goes by the name "Big B" plays trumpet, trombone and is also a vocalist with the band. A professional musician since the age of 14, Brian has played for many greats in the music business, including Tony Bennett,Tex Beneke, Stan Kenton, Chuck Berry and even Tiny Tim. Bolig The advent of this online discography is a continuation of record descriptions that were compiled by me and published in book form by Allan Sutton, the publisher and owner of Mainspring Press. When undertaking our work, Allan and I were aware of the work started by Ted Fa- gan and Bill Moran, in which they intended to account for every recording made by the Victor Talking Machine Company. We decided to take on what we believed was a more practical approach, one that best met the needs of record collectors. Simply stat- ed, Fagan and Moran were describing recordings that were not necessarily published; I believed record collectors were interested in records that were actually available. We decided to account for records found in Victor catalogs, ones that were purchased and found in homes after 1901 as 78rpm discs, many of which have become highly sought- after collector’s items. The following Victor discographies by John R. Glenn Miller Archives TOMMY DORSEY 1 9 3 5 Prepared by: DENNIS M. SPRAGG Chronology Part 1 - Chapter 1 Updated February 5, 2021 “I’ll Never Say Never Again” “The Brothers” Jimmy and Tommy Dorsey The Dorsey Brothers’ Orchestra opened at the Glen Island Casino, New Rochelle, New York on May 15, 1935. Many celebrities attended the successful opening night and the band was in top form. All signs pointed to a successful summer season and further sales of more records. In addition, the Glen Island Casino was wired for numerous nationwide radio broadcasts. However, an undercurrent of tension existed between the brothers. May 30, 1935, during the Decoration Day holiday weekend (now known as Memorial Day), the situation came to a head. As Tommy led the band into the tune “I’ll Never Say “Never Again” Again”, the vocal trio of Roc Hillman, Skeets Herfurt and Don Matteson were approaching the microphone. They remembered hearing Jimmy say something like “Hey, Mac, that’s a little fast, isn’t it?” Tommy reportedly replied, “You want to take over? It’s all yours” and he walked off the bandstand before the audience at the Glen Island Casino. By late July Tommy reluctantly returned to finish the engagement with Jimmy and the band at the urging of Tommy Rockwell and a threat by Michael DeZutter, owner of the Glen Island Casino, to nullify the Dorsey Brothers’ Orchestra contract for the remainder of the engagement. Cork O’Keefe unsuccessfully tried to reconcile the brothers. Tommy refused to work with his brother and the Dorsey Brothers’ Orchestra became Jimmy Dorsey and his Orchestra.
