David Lockard A JOINT PROJECT of the of Science American Associationfor the Advancement and the Science Teaching Center,University of Maryland FOREWARD When it was established in 1962, the Commission on Science Education of the American Association for the Advancement ofScience embarked on two major projects. One was the development of a sci- ence program for children in elementaryschools. This program Science--A Process Approach is described elsewhere in this report. The second was the preparation and publication of anannual report of new science and mathematics curriculumdevelopments. Dr. J. David Lockard the University of Maryland, Science TeachingCentr, agreed to collect and publish the data on newcurriculum develop- ments for the Commission. Under his leadership the report has grown each year and now includes reports of curriculumdevelopments from many countries. The Commission and its directors are mostgrateful for the excellent work that Dr. Lockard and his staffhave done in compiling this report. The Commission has an active concern for theimprovement of science education both in and out of school atall levels; for example, from a recent Commission study of the roleof science in the training of technicians came two brochures ontechnical educa- tion. Another recent activity has been the preparationof guide- lines for the preservice science education ofelementary school teachers. The report of the guidelines project isavailable from the American Association for the Advancementof Science. Work has just begun on the preparation of a similar setof guidelines for the education of secondary school scienceand mathematics teachers. These guidelines will be published in 1971.The Commission has recently published an extensive bibliography ofreferences on sci- ence and society. Other activities of the Commission aredescribed in the Commission Newsletter. I spent the last three summers learning traditional dance- drumming in Ghana, West Africa. I focus primarily on two schools that I have significant recent experience with: the Dagbe Arts Centre in Kopeyia and the Dagara Music and Arts Center in Medie. While at Dagbe, I studied the music and dance of the Anlo-Ewe ethnic group, a people who live primarily in the Volta region of South-eastern Ghana, but who also inhabit neighboring countries as far as Togo and Benin. I took classes and lessons with the staff as well as with the director of Dagbe, Emmanuel Agbeli, a teacher and performer of Ewe dance-drumming. His father, Godwin Agbeli, founded the Dagbe Arts Centre in order to teach others, including foreigners, the musical styles, dances, and diverse artistic cultures of the Ewe people. The Dagara Music and Arts Center was founded by Bernard Woma, a master drummer and gyil (xylophone) player. The DMC or Dagara Music Center is situated in the town of Medie just outside of Accra. Mr. Woma hosts primarily international students at his compound, focusing on various musical styles, including his own culture, the Dagara, in addition music and dance of the Dagbamba, Ewe, and Ga ethnic groups.

    C H APTER -II HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF PUBLIC SCHOOLS 2.0 INTRODUCTORY REMARKS The purpose of this chapter is to give an account of historical back­ ground of Public Schools, both in England and in India. It is essential to know the origin and development of Public Schools in England, as Public Schools in India had been transplanted from England. 2.1 ORIGIN OF THE TERM PUBLIC SCHOOL The term 'Public School' finds its roots in ancient times. In ancient time kings and bishops used to run the schools for the poor. No fee was charged. All used to live together. It was a union of 'classes'. The expenses were met by public exchequer. Thus the name was given to these schools as Public Schools. 2.2 ESTABLISHMENT OF FIRST PUBLIC SCHOOLS William of Wykeham, Bishop of Winchester established 'Saint Marie College' at Winchester in 1382. This foundation made a crucial departure from previous practice and thus, has a great historical importance. All the previous schools had been ancillary to other establishments; they Kod been established as parts of cathedrals, collegiate churches, monasteries, chantries, hospitals or university colleges. The significance of this college is its independent nature. 17 Its historian, A.F. Leach says "Thus for the first time a school was established as a sovereign and independent corporation, existing by and for itself, self-centered and self-governed."^ The foundation of Winchester College is considered to be the origin of the English Public School because of three conditions: 1. The establishment of the Jewish state seemed to force people on the left to choose between competing nationalisms - Israeli, Arab and later, Palestinian. Over time, a number of key developments sharpened the dilemma. My central focus is the evolution of thinking about Israel and the Middle East in the British Labour Party. I examine four critical periods: the creation of Israel in 1948; the Suez war in 1956; the Arab-Israeli war of 1967 and the 1980s, covering mainly the Israeli invasion of Lebanon but also the intifada. In each case, entrenched attitudes were called into question and longer-term shifts were triggered in the aftermath.

The research includes the analysis of newspaper coverage of the most significant sporting events in recent Japanese history, including the 2014 Koshien National High School Baseball Championships, the awarding of the People’s Honor Award, the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup, wrestler Hakuho’s record breaking victories in the sumo ring, and the bidding process for the 2020 Olympic Games. 2054 Japanese language articles were examined by thematic analysis in order to identify the extent to which established themes of “Japaneseness” were reproduced or renegotiated in the coverage. The research contributes to a broader understanding of national identity negotiation by illustrating the manner in which established symbolic boundaries are reproduced in service of the nation, particularly via mass media. Furthermore, the manner in which change is negotiated through processes of assimilation and rejection was considered through the lens of hybridity theory. iv To my wife, Ari, and my children, Hiroto and Mia. A writing master, businessman, printer and type designer, he conducted experiments to improve legibility which also included paper making and ink manufacturing. In 1758, he was appointed printer to Cambridge University Press, and despite his personal Atheism, printed a folio Bible in 1763. His typefaces were greatly admired for their simplicity and refinement by Pierre Simon Fournier, and Giambattista Bodoni. Benjamin Franklin, printer and fellow member of the Royal Society of Arts, took the designs to the US, where they were adopted for most federal Government publishing.     ESTABLıSHED ın 1936 The Doon School Weekly Saturday, August 16|Issue No. 2379 Regulars Interview Week Gone By Poetry 2 3 3 4 DISCOVERY WEEK AT CERN Preetam Mohan reports on the visit to CERN which took place during the holidays On the 15th of June, a group of nine boys escorted by Dr Ashish Dean left for Geneva, Switzerland to experience life in one of the finest institutions in the world in its field - European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN). It was a most exciting prospect as School had organized a program of such magnitude for the first time, and it was supported by the fact that all of us had an interest in the field of work explored at CERN. The five-day internship program kicked off at 0800 hours on the 16th of June, with us meeting some of the topmost authorities at CERN. The highlight was meeting the Director General, Dr Rolf Dieter Heuer himself. The ‘showcases of CERN’, the Microcosm and the Globe provided us a preview of what we might be staring at for the next five days. It, befittingly, related to the modern day applications and we were drawn into the origin and the thoughts that revolved around such discoveries. The day was organized in a way to expose us to what CERN’s aim is: exploring Fundamental questions such as ‘where do we come from?’ and ‘what are we made of?’ These gave the internship the intellectual gravitas that it deserved. After visiting the computing centre we learnt that India has two centers on the CERN radar and we were happy to know that so many countries had pooled in resources to further the cause of science through CERN.
