We are going into our third year of The Discovery Series Scholarship Fund, started by U.S. Sugar with the mission of breaking down any barriers that prevent students from enjoying a cultural experience at The Lyric Theatre. “We are pleased to help provide theatre experiences and exposure to the fine arts to these deserving students,” said Judy Sanchez, the Senior Director of Corporate Communications and Public Affairs for U.S. Sugar. “Giving back to our communities has always been a part of the fabric of our company.” Since our partnership began, this scholarship fund has made it possible for roughly 1,400 students from schools across Martin County to attend live performances. “Expanding arts and education programming is a primary focus of The Lyric Theatre,” said Kia Fontaine, the Executive Director of The Lyric Theatre. “The Lyric is striving to provide more cultural enrichment opportunities for our future leaders. It is through the generosity of partners like U.S. Sugar that we are able to do so.” Over the years, this scholarship has become essential for the Arts & Education Programs. The Discovery April 6th • 2pm & 5pm Series for Young Audiences are school-time shows that focus on classroom subjects such as history, literature, science, and wellness. These plays take an exciting approach to education and come with tools to help teachers reinforce student learning including study guides that support Florida State curriculum requirements and lessons about theater etiquette. Teachers from Martin County Title 1 schools are encouraged to apply. For more information go to: http://www.lyrictheatre.com/discovery-series.

Campers Spreading Positivity and Creativity Summer camp is a place for kids to take a step away from TV and computer screens to discover more about themselves surrounded by fellow campers and counselors.

The Lyric’s AWESOME! Summer Camp is no exception. This summer, campers explored the true meaning of beauty in our first session, “From the Inside Out.” Through dance, drama, and music classes, campers learned that each person has their own beauty and greatness, and that they should not be afraid to share that with the world. They were also encouraged to hold a mirror up to the beauty they see in others, especially when those people have trouble seeing it for themselves. This message coupled with lessons touching on topics such as pantomime, stomp dance, and harmonizing lead to an incredible first Sharing show for the summer.

LASC’s second session, titled “Unplugged,” turned campers’ eyes from phone screens, only to find fun behind the cover of a good book, just outside the door, and even with one another. With songs from musicals like Finding Neverland and Seussical, campers opened their minds to the importance of imagination, allowing them to contribute their own words in LASC’s second Sharing for the summer. This year’s campers are commemorated by their contribution to Martin County Rocks, where campers spread their newfound ideas on beauty and positivity by taking a step back from their screens and getting creative, painting positive messages and images on stones left throughout the community. “To all of our campers, have a great school year! We’ll see you next summer!”
