Looking at the knowledge production cycle at the Instituto Nacional de Tecnología Agropecuaria from Argentina Cecilia Gárgano Abstract This paper is a reflection about science and technology (s&t) production at public institutions; devoted to agricultural activities in Argentina. Starting from the historical trajectory of generation, adaptation and diffu- sion of improved seeds at the Instituto Nacional de Tecnología Agropecuaria (inta, National Institute for Agricultural Technology), this paper explores their research dynamic. Through a long term panoramic sight, the study is focused on 1970- 1980 decades, concurrently with the period in which the inta was inter- vened by the last military dictatorship. The goal for this paper is to identify continuities and breakings at inta trajectory, then, it explores the links with transformations at the agricultural sector, political, and economical. In par- ticular, the paper analyzes the research oriented to producing maize hybrids, by studying the cooptation; appropriation and transfer of knowledge from public to private spheres. The documental corpus which was analyzed is constituted by research material, institutional minutes and resolutions; and interviews to technical personnel and researchers from inta. keywords: crops – science – property – military dictatorship (1976-1983) REDES, VOL. 20, Nº 39, BERNAL, DICIEMBRE DE 2014, PP. 7-12 7 The public institutions of science and technology in the Argentinean agrifood production and non-transgenic variety of rice tolerant to herbicides in Entre Ríos Guillermo Sánchez Abstract The aim of this work is to show the key role of public institutions of sci- ence and technology (s&t) as knowledge source in learning processes in the agrifood production. The development of a non genetically modified organisms (gmo), her- bicide-tolerant rice seed and its appropriation by the whole value chain in the province of Entre Ríos, Argentina, is taken as a case study. From a deductive/inductive approach it is analyzed how the innovation system is organized around the available specialized knowledge, which was appropri- ated and diffused by a s&t public institution. The arising relationship system is studied through its connections by applying the social network method and the functional model of innova- tion system. The results allow drawing conclusions about using technologi- cal and institutional ways in order to solve competitiveness

Shrinking forests: the many costs Since 1990, the developing world has lost some 13 million hectares of forest a year. This loss each decade is an area roughly the size of Greece. Meanwhile, the industrial world is actually gaining an estimated 5.6 million hectares of forestland each year, principally from abandoned cropland returning to forests on its own and from the spread of commercial forestry plantations.
