This edition of FOCUS comes in troubled times for the film industry. As of June 2020, cinemas have just initiated a reopening process or are preparing for it under heavy constraints, one of the many reasons why assessing the impact of the COVID-19 crisis on the film industry is premature. Still, some early hypotheses can be explored. The Observatory believes that, as far as audiovisual content is concerned, European theatrical film production and distribution are likely to be the sectors proportionally hit hardest and most profoundly by the crisis. The immediate impact is direct and short-term because all theatrical film distribution as well as film and TV production having come to a sudden stop threatening the existence of thousands of businesses as well as causing mass unemployment among film professionals. TOPIC I was inspired to learn about Stan Lee after watching my first Marvel movie last spring. I was never interested in superheroes before this project, but now I have become an expert on the history of Marvel and have a new found love for the genre. Stan Lee’s entire personal collection is archived at the University of Wyoming American Heritage Center in my hometown. It contains 196 boxes of interviews, correspondence, original manuscripts, photos and comics from the 1920s to today. This was an amazing opportunity to obtain primary resources. !2 RESEARCH My most important primary resource was the phone interview I conducted with Stan Lee himself, now 92 years old. It was a rare opportunity that few people have had, and quite an honor! I use clips of Lee’s answers in my documentary.

Aside from entertainment purposes, cartoons are also used to send messages without a serious tone and indirectly telling something sarcastically. In April 2019, Malaysia was shocked by the headline that ‘Doraemon’ had been selected to represent the Japanese themed cartoon exhibition in conjunction with Visit Malaysia 2020. Malaysian art activists, specifically those who has a cartoon animation background, were very upset and expressed their dissatisfaction with the news. Local legendary cartoonist Datuk Lat also showed his disappointment and made a stand that a local cartoon character should have been chosen to represent Malaysia. Therefore, this research aims to illustrate the development of Malaysian cartoons from when they first started in newspapers, until their existence today in the form of animation on digital platforms. In sequence, Malaysia produced cartoons in newspapers, magazines, blogs, television and cinema, whereby this is in parallel with the development of technology. From hand- drawn art for ‘Usop Sontorian’ to digital animation for the film ‘Upin dan Ipin’, Malaysians should be more appreciative and proud of our local cartoons rather than those from other countries. Contact: [email protected] 1 Digital Surrealism: Visualizing Walt Disney Animation Studios Abstract There are a number of fruitful digital humanities approaches to cinema and media studies, but most of them only pursue traditional forms of scholarship by extracting a single variable from the audiovisual text that is already legible to scholars. Instead, cinema and media studies should pursue a mostly-ignored “digital-surrealism” that uses computer-based methods to transform film texts in radical ways not previously possible. This article describes one such method using the z-projection function of the scientific image analysis software ImageJ to sum film frames in order to create new composite images. However, while Disney often has been associated with themes such as childhood, magic, and innocence, many of the company’s animated films have simultaneously been criticized for their offensive and quite problematic take on race and ethnicity, as well their heavy reliance on cultural stereotypes. This study aims to evaluate Disney’s portrayals of racial and ethnic minorities, as well as determine whether or not the nature of the company’s portrayals have become more culturally sensitive with time. To accomplish this, seven animated feature films produced by Disney were analyzed. These analyses are of a qualitative nature, with a focus on imagology and postcolonial literary theory, and the results have simultaneously been compared to corresponding criticism and analyses by other authors and scholars. Based on the overall results of the analyses, it does seem as if Disney is becoming more progressive and culturally sensitive with time. However, while most of the recent films are free from the clearly racist elements found in the company’s earlier productions, it is quite evident that Disney still tends to rely heavily on certain cultural stereotypes.

    PRESS RELEASE Wereldhave sells Itis and exits Finland Wereldhave has reached agreement to sell the Itis shopping centre in Helsinki to a fund advised by Morgan Stanley Real Estate Investing (MSREI). With this transaction, Wereldhave has made a large step in realising its strategic agenda to focus on convenience centres, whilst improving its risk profile and strengthening the balance sheet. The net price for the shopping centre including the deferred tax liability amounts to € 450m. This reflects a gross price of € 516 million which is 8.5% below the book value at 30 June 2018. The transaction is scheduled for December 2018, subject to completion of the Finnkino development project and antitrust approval. After completion, Wereldhave’s portfolio will be strongly focused on one asset class, with 29 convenience shopping centres in Belgium (7), France (6) and the Netherlands (16). As Itis accounted for 15% of the portfolio, the single asset exposure will decrease to 7%, which improves the risk profile of the Company. Once the disposal of Finland is completed, the LTV is expected to drop by 6%, thus significantly improving the capital structure of Wereldhave. As a result of the completion of the transaction and the associated loss of rental income in December, Wereldhave expects the direct result for 2018 to be between € 3.30 and € 3.35 per share (previously € 3.33 and € 3.38). The dividend can and will be maintained at the current level of € 2.52 in respect of 2018 and 2019. The film tells the story of Jack Malik (Himesh Patel), a struggling singer-songwriter in a tiny English seaside town who wakes up after a freak accident to discover that The Beatles have never existed, and only he remembers their songs. Sony Pictures Classics’ MAIDEN, directed by Alex Holmes, will close the festival. This immersive documentary recounts the thrilling story of Tracy Edwards, a 24-year-old charter boat cook who became the skipper of the first ever all-female crew to enter the Whitbread Round the World Yacht Race. The 24th Nantucket Film Festival runs June 19-24, 2019, and celebrates the art of screenwriting and storytelling in cinema. A24’s THE FAREWELL, written and directed by Lulu Wang, will screen as the festival’s Centerpiece film.
