THE IMMERSIVE THEME PARK Analyzing the Immersive World of the Magic Kingdom Theme Park JOOST TER BEEK (S4155491) MASTERTHESIS CREATIVE INDUSTRIES Radboud University Nijmegen Supervisor: C.C.J. van Eecke 22 July 2018 Summary The aim of this graduation thesis The Immersive Theme Park: Analyzing the Immersive World of the Magic Kingdom Theme Park is to try and understand how the Magic Kingdom theme park works in an immersive sense, using theories and concepts by Lukas (2013) on the immersive world and Ndalianis (2004) on neo-baroque aesthetics as its theoretical framework. While theme parks are a growing sector in the creative industries landscape (as attendance numbers seem to be growing and growing (TEA, 2016)), research on these parks seems to stay underdeveloped in contrast to the somewhat more accepted forms of art, and almost no attention was given to them during the writer’s Master’s courses, making it seem an interesting choice to delve deeper into this subject. Trying to reveal some of the core reasons of why the Disney theme parks are the most visited theme parks in the world, and especially, what makes them so immersive, a profound analysis of the structure, strategies, and design of the Magic Kingdom theme park using concepts associated with the neo-baroque, the immersive world and the theme park is presented through this thesis, written from the perspective of a creative master student who has visited these theme parks frequently over the past few years, using further literature, research, and critical thinking on the subject by others to underly his arguments. -

I claim that behind the Strip’s “reinventions” lies a process of symbolic destruction. Since resorts distinguish themselves symbolically, each new round of capital accumulation relies on the destruction of symbolic capital of existing resorts. A new resort either ups the language within a paradigm, or causes a paradigm shift, which devalues the previous resorts even further. This is why, in the context of the Strip, buildings have such a short lifespan. This dissertation is chronologically structured around the four building booms of new resort construction that occurred on the Strip. Historically, there are periodic waves of new casino resort constructions with continuous upgrades and renovation projects in between. They have been successively theorized as suburbanization, corporatization, Disneyfication, and global branding. Each building boom either conforms to a single paradigm or witnesses a paradigm shift halfway: these paradigms have been theorized as Wild West, Los Angeles Cool, Pop City, Corporate Modern, Disneyland, Sim City, and Starchitecture. -

Research Report MENA | Hotels October 2014 DNA of Theme Park Hotels Introducing Theme Park Hotels Theme parks are a draw card for many leading family tourism destinations – their success plays an important role in providing a constant flow of family tourists to an area, positively impacting the hotels that are situated within or in Filippo Sona close proximity to the parks. The Middle East however has yet to develop a theme park on a similar scale and is currently dominated by smaller sized attractions. With a number of major theme parks currently under construction in the region including: IMG World of Adventure, Bollywood Parks, Motiongate, Legoland and the Red Sea Astrarium, an opportunity exists for the hotel industry to capitalise on visitors to the parks with the development of theme park hotels. What is a Theme Park Hotel? By Disneyization I mean simply: the process by which the principles of the Disney theme parks are coming to dominate more and more sectors of American society as well as the rest of the world. I see the principles that are described in this book as infiltrating many and a grow- ing number of areas of social, cultural, and economic life. Others have drawn attention to the way in which many areas of modern life are coming to take on the manifestations of a theme park, such as when a Times journalist referred to Canary Wharf in London as ‘theme park city’.1 In this book I go beyond such general allusions to the growing influence of the Disney theme parks on social life by delineating, in more precise terms, the specific theme park principles that I see seeping through our society. In other words, the project with which this book is concerned is a more analytic assessment of the manifestation of Disney theme parks’ principles than is typically undertaken. At the same time, I will emphasize that we cannot attribute the dispersion of these principles solely to the rise of the Disney theme parks, since they clearly predate the parks themselves. The Disney theme park principles may well have leaked into our social institutions and prac- tices without the aid of the parks themselves. -

Smith said that the expansion follows increased visitor numbers at Merlin's existing Aussie attractions during 2018. The operator expects the number of visitors to be up by "between 3 and 4 per cent" for the year.
