The pro-colonial lineage of Obama has been left unmentioned by the mainstream media, whom often champion his election as a black civil rights victory. Presidential Policies As a loyal member of the US deep state, Obama has continued the deep state's policies of the militarisation of US Society by assisting the rollback of civil liberties, and ramping up the war on terror while continuing the unhampered mass surveillance. Nobel peace prize not withstanding, his foreign policy has been to escalate conflicts abroad and to try to reignite a new cold war. In 2010 he sought to expand the US nuclear budget and in October 2013, his Assistant Defense Secretary Madelyn Creedon told a panel in the U.S. House of Representatives that "modernization work of this kind is expensive, but there is no doubt that the investment ... is necessary", explaining why multi-billion dollar expenditure was needed to modernize the US nuclear arsenal in pursuit of President Barack Obama's goal of reducing it.[18][19] On 27 May 2016, speaking on the first visit by a US president to Hiroshima in Japan, Obama called for nations to reconsider the development of nuclear weapons and to roll back and “ultimately eliminate” them. His admission that "we tortured some folks" has been followed by a marked absence of discussion about legal actions as a result - which are mandated by the United Nations Convention against Torture, to which the US has long been a signatory. Birth Certificate Obama has been the subject of allegations (not backed by the commercially-controlled media) that he was not born in the US, and as such is not eligible to be a US president. Donald Trump has vocally supported the claims of those who doubt Obama's eligibility, stating "This may go down as the greatest con in the history of American politics". On October 24, 2012, Trump offered to donate five million dollars to the charity of Obama's choice in return for the publication of his college and passport applications before October 31, 2012. Obama did not take him up on the offer.[21] Though the mainstream media and conservative politicians have suggested that the birth certificate has been hidden because it will show a birthplace of Kenya, some have theorized that it has been hidden due to Barack Obama really being born in Israel. It’s thus suspected that Obama's political rivals have capitalized on this, knowing that a genuine copy could not be publicly released, and instead propagated an Obama-Kenya-Muslim connection in order to demonize both Obama and Muslims while not negatively effecting Jews and Israel.

Consistent with this long tradition, since my first days in office I have underscored the importance of adhering to standards—including international legal standards—that govern the use of force. Far from eroding our nation’s influence, I have argued, adherence to these standards strengthens us, just as it isolates those nations who do not follow such standards. Indeed, as I have consistently emphasized, what makes America truly remarkable is not the strength of our arms or our economy, but rather our founding values, which include respect for the rule of law and universal rights. As of today, a parcel tax to replace the current library does not have the necessary votes to make it on the 2020 ballot, according to a survey conducted by FM3 Research. Approximately 55% of those surveyed said they would vote “yes” on a ballot measure, which is well below the two- thirds needed for passage. Under the Bush Administration it was widely believed, in both mainstream opinion and much of the amnesiac section of the left, that the United AStates had fallen under an aberrant regime, the product of a virtual coup d’état by a coterie of right-wing fanatics—alternatively, ultra-reactionary corporations—who had hijacked American democracy for policies of unprecedented aggression in the Middle East. In reaction, the election to the Presidency of a mixed-race Democrat, vowing to heal America’s wounds at home and restore its reputation abroad, was greeted with a wave of ideological euphoria not seen since the days of Kennedy. Once again, America could show its true face—purposeful but peaceful, firm but generous; humane, respectful, multi-cultural—to the world. Naturally, with the makings of a Lincoln or a Roosevelt for our time in him, the country’s new young ruler would have to make compromises, as any statesman must. But at least the shameful interlude of Republican swagger and criminality was over. Bush and Cheney had broken the con- tinuity of a multilateral American leadership that had served the country well throughout the Cold War and after. Obama would now restore it. Rarely has self-interested mythology—or well-meaning gullibility—been more quickly exposed. There was no fundamental break in foreign pol- icy, as opposed to diplomatic mood music, between the Bush 1, Clinton and Bush 2 Administrations; there has been none between the Bush and Obama regimes.

INTRODUCTION Over the past half-century, the Office of the Legal Adviser in the U.S. Department of State has grown significantly in size and scope. During that time, a handful of articles have described the work of the Legal Adviser. 1 This Essay builds upon those accounts by describing the role of the Legal Adviser in the still-young Obama Administration. The United States currently faces a defining moment for its relationship with international law, as we stand at the cusp of what President Obama has called a “new era of engagement.” 2 The defining image of this new world is not a world divided by a Berlin Wall, but a globe connected by the World Wide Web. Paul Rogers When the Nobel Peace Prize was announced there was surprise if not astonishment in many circles. This year’s prize had been considered to be very open, but several potential recipients had been identified, including Pieda Cordoba of Colombia, Prince Ghazi bin Muhammad of Jordan and Dr Sima Sanar of Afghanistan. These and others were people involved in long-term human rights activism or specific campaigns on issues such as inter-faith dialogue. The awarding of the prize to President Barack Obama was far from being the first time that it had gone to a head of state or other leading political figure, but on most previous occasions it had been for defined achievements over some years. In the case of President Obama, the award was “for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples”, but critics pointed to the very short space of time involved, with the nominating process actually having been completed within days of his taking office last January. A consequence of the decision was very strong opposition from the political right in the United States, sometimes bordering on apoplexy and frequently seeing it as interference in domestic policies, especially at a time of intensive controversy over health care reform. There were also criticisms from progressive circles, mainly that the prize committee should not have made the award to a politician who, whatever the changes he was seeking, was still involved in a war in Iraq, and was considering an escalation in Afghanistan and heavier involvement in counter-insurgency in Pakistan.
