Many of those who love the Neponset River and the environmental resources of the surrounding areas in Quincy and Milton want to see greater public access to the river and protection of its fragile ecosystem. The recently completed Pope John Paul Park and Neponset Greenway on the west side of the Estuary are excellent examples of achieving the goal of public access, land reclamation, and resource protection. On the east side of the Estuary, the Metropolitan District Commission (MDC) has already created a park at Squantum Point and preserved significant areas of salt marsh in Quincy and Milton. Trails at Squantum Point Park were included in the Neponset Master Plan, but have yet to be constructed (www.mass.gov/mdc/NEP_PLAN.HTM). The Neponset Riverwalk is inspired by these landmark accomplishments. To promote the Riverwalk concept, Quincy Attorney Bryan Stevens, Steve Perdios, Co-chair of the Friends of the Neponset Estuary and the Quincy Environmental Network, Tom Palmer, Board member of the Neponset River Watershed Association (NepRWA) and Friends of the Blue Hills, and Ian Cooke, Executive Director of NepRWA encouraged me to create a conceptual plan and report. -

Eisenhower was held at Quincy’s historic United First Parish Church. Participating clergymen included Rev. Bradford E. Gale, Rev. Dean E. Benedict, Rabbi David J. Ja- cobs, Rev. Richard J. Hawko, Rev. Demeticus Michaelides and Rev. Stephen W. Brown. The bell tolled sadly and solemn words were spoken in a farewell tribute to the late president. The Rev. Stephen Brown, pastor of First United Pres- byterian Church, Quincy, noted that “Dwight David Eisen- hower is a symbol of that which is good and right and strong in our nation.” THIS 1940 POSTCARD is a view of Hancock Street in level with the awnings. As one of two municipal two-year colleges in the nation, Quincy presents an interesting case study of how a community college fared under city school board governance. This dissertation explores Quincy's history, the movement from individual control, clashes of organizational culture between the college and school system, and factors that ultimately forced the college's separation. Chapters include the following: (1) Introduction;(2) Related Literature; (3) Individual Leadership and Control: 1948-1986;(4) The Institution Comes of Age: 1985-1991;(5) Struggle Towards Resolution: 1991-1996;(6) Divergent Paths: An Analysis of Change at Quincy College; and (7) Implications: The Road Not Taken. An epilogue reviews events occurring from 1996 and 1997, such as the college's re-accreditation and the layoff of many of the college's senior leaders. Though The sixth annual Houghs Neck “Polar Plunge” was held at the I worked Christmas eve and Christmas night I was able to enjoy public landing as 30 brave souls took a quick dip in 46-degree Christmas dinner with family. I worked New Year’s Eve also, but water for a good cause. Proceeds from the annual event benefit the we rang in the New Year fire station style. It was a warm 40-degree day included children, senior citizens, community and school activists with water temps at about 43 degrees. Among the avian stars of the BBC Extreme Pelagic trip in early September 2009 were this Band-rumped Storm-Petrel (left) and Bridled Tern (right), both photographed by Jeremiah Trimble. On September 29, Pat Ryder told Mark Faherty about “something weird” at Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary. Mark identified it as a Fork-tailed Flycatcher (left) and took this great photograph.
