Throughout the Edo period (1603-1868), works of fiction were liberally illustrated with woodblock printed images, which, especially towards the mid-19th century, had become an essential component of most popular literature in Japan. With the opening of Japan’s borders in the Meiji period (1868-1912), writers who had grown up reading illustrated fiction were exposed to foreign works of literature that largely eschewed the use of illustration as a medium for storytelling, in turn leading them to reevaluate the role of image in their own literary tradition. As authors endeavored to produce a purely text-based form of fiction, modeled in part on the European novel, they began to reject the inclusion of images in their own work. -

Before you is a land strange and unfamiliar, yet still covered in the planes of blowing white. Forests, hills and mountains lie ahead, dotted by wind scattered roadways, paths, shrines and ruins. But there is something in the air here, something that can’t be seen or heard, smelt or touched. Something mysterious and otherworldly. Alas, it would seem your arrival was not unnoticed. It has been decades since I arrived. Who, or what are you stranger?” [Background] [Gender] [Male] Men, a rarity in the hidden realm. Human men are usually stronger than women, however that ill-conceived confidence in the absoluteness of might almost unanimously leads to instant obliteration when dealing with Youkai. [+1 Strength] [Female] Women make up the majority in the hidden realm. Though on the outside most human woman suffer less enviable fates, many find themselves better prepared for Gensōkyō. Not that this does them much good, of course. [+1 Dexterity] [Race] [Null-Bound] Touched by whatever zero-sum aspect that has stilled the earth. You cannot die as a normal human. Belphégor Cora Requena Hidalgo Seres fantásticos japoneses en la literatura y en el cine: Obakemono, yūrei, yōkai y kaidan A estas alturas del siglo XXI hablar de rasgos característicos en la cultura japonesa puede resultar repetitivo y cansino. En su deseo de aproximarse al mundo japonés, que invade hoy Occidente con sorprendentes formas de discurso que inyectan nueva energía a las ya cansadas y tradicionales formas del relato occidental, artistas y especialistas de esta parte del mundo intentan identificar y aislar las características que a priori parecen ser exclusivas de la cosmovisión nipona. De más está decir que la empresa es difícil, pues en la aproximación siempre interviene en mayor o menor medida “nuestra occidentalidad”, imposible de erradicar del todo; sin embargo, más que un obstáculo esta deficiencia debería ser causa y razón para intentar un acercamiento riguroso al mundo japonés por medio del conocimiento abierto y sin prejuicios que, en definitiva, es parte esencial del conocimiento científico de Occidente. En uno de sus textos más conocidos, el japonólogo greco-irlandés Lafcadio Hearn, escribe: “Sin el conocimiento de las fábulas populares y de las supersticiones del lejano Oriente, la comprensión de sus novelas, de sus comedias y de sus poesías continuará siendo imposible” (Hearn, El romance de la Vía Láctea: 56). La cita de Hearn es certera, y todo investigador que se haya acercado alguna vez a la literatura o al cine nipones sabrá hasta qué punto es imprescindible este conocimiento que traspasa todos los niveles de una cultura que se niega a abandonar un pasado mítico e histórico-literario del que continúa alimentándose. -

Stage and Scream: The Influence of Traditional Japanese Theater, Culture, and Aesthetics on Japan’s Cinema of the Fantastic. Although widely viewed in the West, Japanese films are often misunderstood, as they are built on cultural, theatrical, and aesthetic traditions entirely foreign to Western audiences. Particularly in regards to Japan’s “fantastic” cinema – including giant monster pictures, ghost stories, and “J-Horror” films – what is often perceived as “cheap” or “cheesy” is merely an expression of these unique cultural roots. By observing and exploring such cultural artifacts as kabuki, noh, and bunraku – the traditional theatrical forms of Japan – long-standing literary traditions, deeply embedded philosophical beliefs, and even more recent developments such as the controversial dance form butoh, these films, including Gojira (1954), Daimajin (1966), Kwaidan (1964), Onibaba (1964), Testuo the Iron Man (1989), and Ju-On (2002), can be placed in their proper perspective, leading to a reevaluation of their worth not merely as commercial products, but as uniquely Japanese expressions of that society’s unique place in world culture. -
