Western Criticism, Labelling Practice and Self-Orientalised East Asian Films
Travelling Films: Western Criticism, Labelling Practice and Self-Orientalised East Asian Films Goldsmiths College University of London PhD thesis (Cultural Studies) Ji Yeon Lee Abstract This thesis analyses western criticism, labelling practices and the politics of European international film festivals. In particular, this thesis focuses on the impact of western criticism on East Asian films as they attempt to travel to the west and when they travel back to their home countries. This thesis draws on the critical arguments by Edward Said's Orientalism: Western Conceptions of the Orient (1978) and self-Orientalism, as articulated by Rey Chow, which is developed upon Mary Louise Pratt's conceptual tools such as 'contact zone' and 'autoethnography'. This thesis deals with three East Asian directors: Kitano Takeshi (Japanese director), Zhang Yimou (Chinese director) and 1m Kwon-Taek (Korean director). Dealing with Japanese, Chinese and Korean cinema is designed to show different historical and cultural configurations in which each cinema draws western attention. This thesis also illuminates different ways each cinema is appropriated and articulated in the west. This thesis scrutinises how three directors from the region have responded to this Orientalist discourse and investigates the unequal power relationship that controls the international circulation of films. Each director's response largely depends on the particular national and historical contexts of each country and each national cinema. The processes that characterise films' travelling are interrelated: the western conception of Japanese, Chinese or Korean cinema draws upon western Orientalism, but is at the same time corroborated by directors' responses. Through self-Orientalism, these directors, as 'Orientals', participate in forming and confirming the premises of western Orientalism. -

This epic tale of forbidden passion, devotion and the glorious triumph of love in adversity is set in 18th Century Korea and begins as Mongryong, the privileged son of the Governor of Namwon, falls in love with Chunhyang, the beautiful daughter of a proud former courtesan. Soon after they are married in secret, Mongryong is ordered to Seoul to finish his education. He leaves reluctantly and promises that once he finishes his schooling he will send for his beloved. But time passes, and a new, vindictive Governor is appointed in the province where Chunhyang lives. This new Governor pursues Chunhyang and when she refuses his advances, she is imprisoned and sentenced to death. Chunhyang's only hope for being saved is her faith in the promise Mongryong once made to her. Drawing heavily on his country's rich and vibrant cultural heritage, veteran Korean director Im Kwon Taek's CHUNHYANG retells a classic tale of lovers torn apart by their two different worlds. -
Purple Hibiscus Novel
Purple Hibiscus a novel by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie For Professor James Nwoye Adichie and Mrs. Grace Ifeoma Adichie, my parents, my heroes, ndi o ga-adili mma. Table of Contents Title Page Dedication Breaking Gods Speaking With Our Spirits The Pieces of Gods A Different Silence Acknowledgments P.S. About the Author About the book Read on Also by the Author Praise Preview Copyright About the Publisher BREAKING GODS Palm Sunday Things started to fall apart at home when my brother, Jaja, did not go to communion and Papa flung his heavy missal across the room and broke the figurines on the étagère. We had just returned from church. Mama placed the fresh palm fronds, which were wet with holy water, on the dining table and then went upstairs to change. Later, she would knot the palm fronds into sagging cross shapes and hang them on the wall beside our gold- framed family photo. They would stay there until next Ash Wednesday, when we would take the fronds to church, to have them burned for ash. Papa, wearing a long, gray robe like the rest of the oblates, helped distribute ash every year. His line moved the slowest because he pressed hard on each forehead to make a perfect cross with his ash-covered thumb and slowly, meaningfully enunciated every word of “dust and unto dust you shall return.” Papa always sat in the front pew for Mass, at the end beside the middle aisle, with Mama, Jaja, and me sitting next to him. He was first to receive communion. -

Cependant, les performances des pays bénéficiant de ceux-ci montrent des disparités dans le développement : certains sont riches, d’autres sont pauvres. -
The Changing Face of Korean Cinema, 1960 to 2015 / Brian Yecies and Ae-Gyung Shim
The Changing Face of Korean Cinema The rapid development of Korean cinema during the decades of the 1960s and 2000s reveals a dynamic cinematic history that runs parallel to the nation’s politi- cal, social, economic, and cultural transformation during these formative periods. This book examines the ways in which South Korean cinema has undergone a transformation from an antiquated local industry in the 1960s into a thriving international cinema in the twenty-first century. It investigates the circumstances that allowed these two eras to emerge as creative watersheds and demonstrates the forces behind Korea’s positioning of itself as an important contributor to regional and global culture, especially its interplay with Japan, Greater China, and the United States. Beginning with an explanation of the understudied operations of the film industry during its 1960s take-off, it then offers insight into the challenges that producers, directors, and policy makers faced in the 1970s and 1980s during the most volatile part of Park Chung Hee’s authoritarian rule and the subsequent Chun Doo-hwan military government. It moves on to explore the film industry’s profes- sionalization in the 1990s and subsequent international expansion in the 2000s. In doing so, it explores the nexus and tensions of film policy, producing, directing, genres, and the internationalization of Korean cinema over half a century. By highlighting the recent transnational turn in national cinemas, this book underscores the impact of developments pioneered by Korean cinema on the transformation of “Planet Hallyuwood”. It will be of particular interest to students and scholars of Korean Studies and Film Studies. -

Reception to Korean Cinema and Korean Cultural Troupes in Chennai
Draft only Not to be quoted Reception to Korean Cinema and Korean Cultural Troupes in Chennai Dr G.Koteswara Prasad Professor Department of Politics and Public Administration University of Madras, Chennai 600 005, Tamil Nadu An upsurge of interest in the Korean society and Korean culture has coincided with full fledged participation of Korean cinema in the principal World film festivals during the last few years. The reception to Korean films in various film festivals like Philadelphia Festival of World Cinema 2002, Sanfrancisco Asian Film Festival, Cannes Film Festival, Melbourne International Film Festival, Montreal Film Festival, Pusan International Film Festival, to name some of the festivals, seem to be fairly appreciative and the richness and the breadth of the films is being acclaimed by many discerning viewers. It is being suggested that Korean cinema is one of the most productive and successful film industries outside USA. Reviewing Korean cinema, Boris Trbic believed that the quality films produced in East Asia in 2000 indicate that “this region will in the foreseeable future remain at the helm of new and exciting tendencies in the world cinema.” Korean films are more internationalized among the Asian nations. Korean cinema addresses the questions of national identity, historical memory, gender and contemporary cultural issues in a critical manner and provide much scope for serious interrogation. A glimpse of contemporary mores and attitudes of Korean society is available through this media. Korean cinema both reflects and is reflected through the country’s political, economic social and cultural features. India is easily one of the largest producer of films for a long time and the Indian films are produced at least in 11 languages, though in some languages the number is not very large. -
