I understand that my thesis may be made electronically available to the public. ii Abstract This dissertation brings disability studies and postcolonial studies into dialogue with discourse surrounding risk in the environmental humanities. The central question that it investigates is how critics can reframe and reinterpret existing threat registers to accept and celebrate disability and embodied difference without passively accepting the social policies that produce disabling conditions. It examines the literary and rhetorical strategies of contemporary cultural works that one, promote a disability politics that aims for greater recognition of how our environmental surroundings affect human health and ability, but also two, put forward a disability politics that objects to devaluing disabled bodies by stigmatizing them as unnatural. Some of the major works under discussion in this dissertation include Marie Clements’s Burning Vision (2003), Indra Sinha’s Animal’s People (2007), Gerardine Wurzburg’s Wretches & Jabberers (2010) and Corinne Duyvis’s On the Edge of Gone (2016). The first section of this dissertation focuses on disability, illness, industry, and environmental health to consider how critics can discuss disability and environmental health in conjunction without returning to a medical model in which the term ‘disability’ often designates how closely bodies visibly conform or deviate from definitions of the normal body.

    Tori Gartmond Professor John Abrams The Autism Epidemic Abstract Reported cases of autism spectrum disorders (ASD) have skyrocketed over the last decade, leaving those afflicted and their families curious as to why. Health care professionals have deemed the rise in ASD an epidemic calling much attention to the autistic community. But is it appropriate to equate autism with some of history’s worst and most deadly pathogens? Autism is a disorder, not a disease that can be spread rapidly through person-person interaction. This rise in prevalence can be explained due to broadened diagnostic criteria, increased awareness, and better diagnostic techniques. In addition, those apart of the autistic community are now being stigmatized by those ill-informed about ASD. Therefore, the term epidemic is very misleading and should not be used to explain the rising number of autism spectrum disorder cases. Many parents raise their children and discover it unusual for their child to be distant and unresponsive to facial expressions or exciting moments; to not be able to express proper emotions to certain situations. As most parents do, they take their child to the doctor for an examination to receive an explanation behind their child’s abnormal behavior. The last thing they were expecting to hear was their child being diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder. According to the Center of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, on average, approximately 1 in 88 live births were diagnosed with autism as of 2008 (Baio para 4). As shown in figure one, the rate of autism has increased at an astonishing rate since the 1970s.

McLaren ABSTRACT Social skills training programs for autistic youths and adults exist in nearly every school district and community; these programs focus on bringing autistic people into synchronization with developmental, linguistic, and social norms. However, these norms have not been critically evaluated, and autistic people themselves have not been surveyed about their experiences of, responses to, or opinions about these programs. This study sought direct input from autistic people about these programs. Nothing About Us Without Us (NAUWU), an anonymous cross-sectional survey study, was posted online from 18 February, 2014 to 4 April, 2014, and was open to adults (18 years or older) who were formally diagnosed or self-diagnosed on the Autism Spectrum. Major findings from the NAUWU study are that most of the 91 autism-specific social skills programs studied are not focused on individuals or their unique sensory and communicative needs, do not recognize participants’ existing social abilities and accomplishments, do not provide age-appropriate or gender-inclusive instruction, and do not consider or support autistic ways of learning and being social.

Sauer 2016 ABSTRACT In late imperial Russia (1861-1917), both scientific and creative elites readily used illness and disability as metaphors for the societal and political crisis that befell the Tsarist regime. These mainstream elites—be they medical doctors, anthropologists, writers, or artists—held complex views of the ill and disabled, seeing them simultaneously as symbols of wisdom and purity as well as dysfunction and degeneration. Whether perceived in a positive or negative light by elites, the ill and disabled were subject to inequitable power structures in which they were reduced to objects of loathing, pity, or fascination. This thesis explores elite attitudes to these marginalized populations as revealed through Russian belles-lettres, medical literature, artwork, and Tsarist education policy.

    Understanding Autism Spectrum Disorder A handbook designed with parents in mind Italy??? I’m often asked to describe the experience of raising a child with a disability to try and help people who have not shared that unique experience to understand it, to imagine how it would feel. It’s like this…. When you’re going to have a baby, it’s like you’re planning a fabulous vacation trip to Italy. You buy a bunch of guidebooks and make your wonderful plans. The Coliseum. Michelangelo’s David. The Gondolas in Venice. You may learn some handy phrases in Italian. It’s all very exciting. After months of eager anticipation, the day finally arrives. You pack your bags and off you go. Several hours later, the plane lands. The stewardess comes in and says “Welcome to Holland!” “Holland?!?!?!?!?!” you say. “What do you mean Holland?? I’m supposed to be in Italy. All my life I’ve dreamed of going to Italy.” But there’s been a change in the flight plan. They’ve landed in Holland, and there you’ll stay. The important thing is that they haven’t taken you to a horrible, disgusting, filthy place full of pestilence, famine and disease. It’s just a different place. So you must go out and buy a new guidebook. And you must learn a whole new language. And you will meet a whole group of people you never would have met. It’s just a different place. It’s slower paced than Italy, less flashy than Italy. But after you’ve been there for a while and you catch your breath, you look around and you begin to notice that Holland has windmills.

    Autism Politics: A Research Agenda John J. Pitney, Jr. [email protected] Claremont McKenna College Paper prepared for presentation at the annual meeting of the Midwest Political Science Association, Chicago, IL, April 22-25, 2010 Abstract Autism has gained a great deal of attention from policymakers and journalists. But there has been little scholarly research into autism policy and politics. This paper sketches what we know about the topic and raises questions for future research. It follows the stages of the policy process. Initiation is the first stage. Psychologists have known of autism since the 1940s, but why has it has become a major national issue only in the past decade? Estimation is the second stage. One possible reason for increased attention is the sharp rise in the reported prevalence of autism. But such data raise another question: how much of the increase reflects changing diagnostic criteria and how much is “real”? Mobilization is the third stage. Emerging issues attract the attention of existing groups or spawn the formation of new ones. In the case of autism, why do these groups form? How and why do they clash or cooperate? Selection and implementation are the fourth and fifth stages. The policy response involves education, health care, and disability policy at the national, state, and local levels. To what extent do policymakers in these fields work together -- or do they work at cross-purposes? What interest group pressures affect policymaking? In the evaluation stage, policymakers reckon how well a policy is working. Are they tracking how much help is reaching people with autism? And is this assistance producing good long-term outcomes? 1 Researchers are seeing more and more cases of autism.
