For waste processers, choosing the right tires for their waste-handling machines can make a huge difference to the machines’ operational lives and greatly reduce the cost of running a recycling facility. TEXT: ELAINE MCCLARENCE PHOTOS: SAM FAIRBROTHER T-TIME 1-2014 3 The elliptical hole pattern in the side- wall of the Brawler tires allows much greater deflection and improved ride quality over broken terrain. the UK alone, IN more than 177 million tons of waste, both domestic and industrial, is created each year, and the country’s waste and recycling sector generates more than 12 billion pounds in sales. Managing this mountain of garbage requires a veritable army of waste-handling machines, which are exposed to the abrasive grind of glass and metal and a chemical combination of decaying organic matter. In the face of such hard use, exacerbated by heavy loads and low speeds, tire life for these machines is short and cost of ownership is high. Working together, Trelleborg and Kal Tire, the UK’s largest earthmover tire and service company, are helping the UK waste industry obtain a better total cost of ownership for its tires. To that end, the two companies have collaborated on Trelleborg’s Brawler range of solid tires, which have been developed specifically for use in the scrap metal and waste industries Brawler tires in action, mounted on one of Kal Tire’s loaders as well as in underground mining. at a waste management facility in Derbyshire, England.
