Symposium – The Role of Explorers and Athletes in Social Activism and Philanthropy, presented by Triumph Motorcycles

As part of the weekend, Outside magazine editor will moderate a compelling discussion with the athletes entitiled “The Role of Explorers and Athletes in Social Activism and Philanthropy.” The symposium will take place at Adventure Base Camp on Sunday afternoon from 3 – 4 p.m.

Adventure Base Camp

The weekend’s buzz centers on Adventure Base Camp, located in downtown Aspen, open Saturday and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. At Base Camp, participants meet their guides each morning and exhibitors keep the action going all day with music, demonstrations, food, kids and family activities and gear displays. In the afternoon, a beer garden with live music from Jes Grew, a top local band, provides a relaxing atmosphere for visitors and participants to soak in the scenery and reflect upon the day’s adventures.

Following is the Outside in Aspen schedule:  Friday, June 8, from 8 p.m. to midnight - Welcome Reception at the Sky Hotel  Saturday, June 9 at 7:30 a.m. -Outside In Aspen (see details below)  Saturday, June 9, from 5 to 8 p.m. - Après Pool Party at the Sky Hotel sponsored by Puerto Vallarta Tourism After a day of outdoor fun and adventure, head to the Sky Hotel’s happening pool scene to kick back and enjoy DJ music, specialty drinks and snacks, a dip in the pool or hot tub, or just chill on the lounge furniture and fire pit areas.  Sunday, June 10, from 3 to 4 p.m. - Adventure Symposium at Base Camp presented by Triumph Motorcycles Afterward, the Gear of the Year giveaway winners are announced, and participants may enjoy autograph signings with pro athletes.  Saturday, June 9 and Sunday, June 10, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. – Adventure Dog Workshop Led by professional dog trainer Mike Stewart, this workshop focuses on honing a dog’s skills for adventure activities including hiking and jogging, mountain biking, watercraft activities, campsite manners and trail assistance. In addition to obedience training, Stewart offers tips on canine first aid, nutrition, health care and extended overland travel. For participants who cannot travel with their own pets, Aspen Animal Shelter will offer dogs from their adoptable program. This program is offered at an additional cost.

Outside in Aspen Triathlon – June 9, 2012

Train – and race - alongside Outside editors and pro-Triathlete and Ironman, Jesse Thomas, on this spectacular courseand take advantage of the adventure-packed Outside in Aspen weekend! The perfect course for beginner triathletes and seasoned racers looking to compete on a short but challenging course, the OiA Triathlon is a USTA-sanctioned event. The state-of-the-art Aspen Recreation Center serves as the start, finish and transition area for the race. Three courses are offered:

 Triathlon (swim, bike, run) - The race starts with an 800-yard pool swim at the Aspen Recreation Center’s 25-yard pool, followed by a 17-mile bike leg up Maroon Creek Road to the Maroon Bells for a 1,500-foot elevation gain, and finished with a four-mile run around the Aspen Golf Club. Pricing from $60  Duathlon (run, bike, run) - The Aspen Duathlon starts with a two-mile run on a paved path and dirt trail, followed by the 17-mile bike course up Maroon Creek Road to the Maroon Bells for a 1,500-foot elevation gain, and finishes with a four- mile run around the Aspen Golf Club. The Outside Challenge New this year, The Outside Challenge is a custom-training program designed to get all levels of athletes ready for a - distance triathlon. Renowned triathlon coach Matt Dixon has created three custom plans with video coaching sessions by Dixon, blog posts by Outside editors who are following the same plans, and access to Dixon to ask training questions.
