Team Tag – this is simply a tag of hands at the bike racks. The runner runs into transition and tags the cyclist who is standing by their bike. Upon finishing the bike leg the cyclist runs to rack their bike and the runner waits by the bike rack. 3. If you have to withdraw from the race at any point please let the timing team at the finish line know of your withdrawal. Race Courses and Details Distances below are approximate. Open & Teams – Run 1km (1 lap)/ Bike ~4km (1 lap) / Run 2km (2 laps) / Bike (1 lap) / Run 2km (2 laps) Novice / Youth / Junior – Run 1km (1 lap) / Bike ~4km (1 lap) / Run 2km (2 laps) Kids 5-9 years – a run/bike/run on the kids BMX bike loop. The runs will be approximately 400m with the MTB being ~1km BIKE LAP Drafting is allowed in the mountain bike leg . The bike lap will be ~4km for a lap (the official loop is about 3km but we will have ~500m approach on the access road). The lap will take around 15mins +/- 2-5mins depending on biking ability. There is no overly technical aspects to the loop. The course has a mix of flat, some small climbs/descents along with a few bridge crossings. The final section of the course will deviate off the track to finish on an access road to avoid head on collisions. IMPORTANT 1. When biking on the shingle access road at the start and end of the ride you will ride on the right hand side of the road 2. You must be considerate of walkers 3. Cars may drive up the access road – the park is open to other users Exit transition, ride 400-500m on the shingle road to the start of the MTB track. RIDE ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE ROAD. The gates that are normally closed will be open, turn right to join the well marked MTB track. Please note the track is shared in places, walking and MTB. We do not have closure of the park so please be considerate of any walkers. Simply follow the BLUE MTB signs around the course. At some points the track is shared but much of it is MTB only. Keep an eye on the signs. We will have additional red “TRIATHLON” arrows marking the course There is one section you can take the “dipper” or “easy” route. The dipper is quicker :-) the choice is yours. There are some passing points as you can see here plus some narrower sections Towards the end of the loop you will come to a T intersection on an access road. The MTB track directs you left but we have permission to use the private access road so you will turn right at this point to exit the MTB lap (this will avoid any head on collisions). Exit the MTB loop and return to transition on the access road riding on the right side of the road. Other considerations: Please be very careful on the cattle stops, especially if wet, make sure you ride over them in a straight line. If you are a strong biker and not so good on the run we suggest you push hard at the start of the ride to get past as many athletes as possible on the access road as there is limited passing opportunities during the lap. If you need to pass someone please be polite and request to “pass on your right” when there is space. Sometimes in MTB racing you just need to be patient. We’ve made this a run/bike/run/bike/run format so we expect slower athletes to be off the MTB loop by the time the fastest athletes get back on for their 2nd bike leg. RUN LAP The run laps is essentially a lap of the kids BMX trail around “base camp”. From the transition area run away from the harbour end, cross the shingle road where indicated and perform a clockwise lap of the kids BMX loop. As you return to transition you will stay on the grass verge on the left of the access road, entering transition from the harbour end. TRANSITION Please note there is a cross over point at the start of the bike. You are required to run you bike over the road (watching for oncoming cyclists before mounting your bike). KIDS DUATHLON (5-9 years) Run/Bike/Run. This will be the most challenging of the event of the series for the kids. After a short opening run the children will ride the ~1km loop (see image above) which does include some changes in grade (ie they will need to be able to use their brakes). The final; run off the bike will be the same as the opening run but instead of heading to their transition kids will run to the finish line. The bike course can be seen in the map above which ride around “base camp”. We are happy for parents to bike alongside their kids allowing enough space for others to pass. The kids transition area will be alongside the main transition area. For more information on Orton Bradley Park visit http://www.ortonbradley.nz/biking-tracks Aid Station There will be no aid stations on the course unless it is hot. We advise you carry a drink on the bike. At the finish line water will be available.
