I nterMarque Monthly, April 2017 PAGE 3 IN THE MIRROR & AROUND THE BEND INTERMARQUE EVENT CHAIR JOHN ENGSTROM We had a good meeting last Saturday and a lot of Kick-Off progress has been made so far. We have received some very nice dash plaques for the goody bags. We have Dave Tobin helping us with marketing because he knows of such things, he will be putting out press releases for major TV and newspapers as well as the smaller local papers as well. Todd Bjerknes, has helped us out by coordinating the show with some local auto dealers, repair shops and restoration shops as well as working with the Girl Scouts on voting for the peoples choice award. We plan on ordering T- Shirts for the show since this is the 25th year of the event. The T-Shirts will be moderately priced and can be reserved by letting us know sizes and amounts before the show. Just email [email protected] with a size and we’ll save you only. Only $10! The rally is still in the mix for the show and it’s a good time to just try one out. It’s set up to be an easy rally anyone can participate. Download the pdf at intermarque.org We will also be purchasing some additional banners to help direct vehicles into the event, hoping that this will alleviate some confusion on where to enter. Posters are available at Saturday Breakfasts and we urge you to attend breakfast, pick some up and see if you can put them up at local business or two so that the word gets out about the show. Besides that the breakfast is good and reasonable, we 25th Annual Spring Kick-Off: 2017 spend a lot of time eating and talking smart anyway. The beauty of this show is that it’s not only for the guys that show the cars but is also for other people to stop by and see the show and it gives car owners the ability to talk cars with ORDERArriving A 25TH ANNIV. ABOVE: Barrett Jackson in all its ‘Make America Great Again’ glory… you can just see a yellow Ferrari on the far right of the photo. I always look forward to auction week in Scottsdale, That’s the ‘stage’ where the cars roll over the block. There are some years when I’ve gone to where each January the Arizona desert becomes the this auction and never actually set foot in this center of the collector car world, where a couple of room where they actually sell the cars. There is enough outside to keep you busy. It’s wall- thousand cars sell for a few hundred million dollars. It to-wall people inside; it’s big and loud… not unlike a lot of the cars they sell. has always seemed like a much better place to sell a car than to buy a car, but you better have something really, really special if you expect to get big money. With the addition of ‘Worldwide Auctions’ event there were seven different auction companies this year, competing for everyone’s consignments and buying dollars: Barrett-Jackson, Russo and Steele, Silver Auctions, Gooding and Co., RM / Sotheby’s, Worldwide, and Bonhams. I’ve never attended the Silver auction and I didn’t make it to Worldwide, but I did make it to the others for both auction previews and on auction days. General overview of the Gooding and Co. auction preview. I make the trip each January with a friend I met in the local Mercedes- Benz club about eight years ago, David Steingas. David and his brothers bought their elderly mother a house in Phoenix a few years ago, where she can go to get away from the Minnesota winters. So when we go out for auction week we stay at her place. We are both huge car guys, but looking at cars, day after day, non-stop car stuff, for a whole week, even we get our fill by the time it’s time to come back home. What’s so fun about the whole thing is the sheer variety. You can find almost anything you can imagine, foreign or domestic, so it makes for a good ‘learning laboratory’ of vintage cars. There’s a huge variety of people, from the gazillionaires actually buying cars at RM and Gooding

that cost millions of dollars to the working class guy sometimes, bordering on ridiculous. It isn’t unusual to buying his only hot rod at Barrett Jackson to the old see a no reserve offering at one of those sales sell for timer bidding on the Packard… just like the one he half the low estimate. In those cases… think about the remembers driving to prom, all those years ago (there consignor. aren’t many of those guys left!). The consignor gives up 10% of the hammer price to the I haven’t crunched the numbers this year, but at the auction company and walks away with a lot less than high-end auctions last year, in 2016, more than 70% he probably expected based on that estimate. That’s the of the cars sold did not meet the low end of their pre- risk of selling a car at auction. Why would you sell (or sale estimates. Here, I’m talking about the highest buy) a Mercedes 280SL at auction when there are so end auctions (Bonhams, RM / Sotheby’s, Gooding many on the market at any one time? It better be a really, and Co.). Barrett Jackson sells just about everything really special car to have any chance of actually walking without reserve. You can buy million dollar cars there, away with more money than you could probably have but you can also buy $3,500 cars. At what I consider pocketed had it been sold privately. The highest end the real ‘high end’ auctions, the venues where they sell sales don’t even let you put a reserve on most cars under less than 200 cars with average sale prices well into six a half a million dollars, they’re in the business of selling figures, the estimates are almost always aggressive, cars and the house always wins. It’s great fun to watch.

Here are some cars I thought the folks who read the Intermarque Monthly would enjoy seeing…

(Gooding and Co.) 1938 Jaguar SS 100 3 ½ liter – this Jag was one of my favorite cars of the week. It was well worn and had clearly been driven over the years. Restored a couple of times along the way perhaps, but not for a long time. According to the auction description, the alligator interior was installed in the mid 1950s. In 1951 its original engine was replaced with a race prepared XK120 engine, so it’s no wonder it has been driven and used for touring for the past 60+ years. Elegant and charming with pre War as well as post War race history… does it get any cooler? It was bid to $360,000 but did not meet reserve, so, the owner took it home with him. (Gooding and Co.) The entry way into the Gooding and Co. auction tents. 1925 Bugatti Type 35 Grand Prix which sold on the first day of Gooding and Co.’s two day sale for $3,300,000 against an auction estimate of $2,600,000 - $3,200,000. Another example of a great car, a car you’d be hard pressed to find anywhere else, going for more than its estimate.

(Gooding and Co.) 1962 Morgan Plus 4 Drophead Coupe – I’ve always liked Morgans. My dad had a drophead coupe before I was born and I always looked at the photos of that car and wished he still had it. This car was of nice driver quality, not perfect, it had some interior wear and the paint wasn’t perfect, but it appeared to be a good, honest car. They only made a couple of hundred dropheads. I was surprised it sold for only $34,100; pre- sale estimate was $40,000 - $50,000. So, do the math… hammered sold for $31,000. Add 10% buyer’s premium and you get the $34,100 – the seller gets the hammer price, less 10%... so he went home with $27,900. (Gooding and Co.) 1959 MG A Twin-Cam Roadster – They only made 279 Twin Cam roadsters for the U.S. export market in 1959. I’ve always thought they were great looking with their Dunlop wheels and that engine… it really looks like something special when you open up the hood. While the engines were known to be hand grenades in their day, the handful of almost anything you can imagine, foreign or domestic, so it makes for a good ‘learning laboratory’ of vintage cars. There’s a huge variety of people, from the gazillionaires actually buying cars at RM and Gooding that cost millions of dollars to the working class guy buying his only hot rod at Barrett Jackson to the old timer bidding on the Packard… just like the one he remembers driving to prom, all those years ago (there aren’t many of those guys left!). (Gooding and Co.) 1961 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster crosses the block at Gooding and Company. It sold for $1,034,000 against a pre-sale estimate of $1,100,000 - $1,300,000. The days of huge prices for any 300SL seem to be behind us. While they’ll always be desirable cars, prices seem to have settled down, like they have for just about everything, after a couple of years of, frankly, unsustainable gains in the market. 1958 Porsche 356 A Super Speedster – Barn finds seem to be all the rage these days. This car was more of a junker than a barn find. It didn’t really have an interior; it was rough, all the way around… not rusted out though, which is a key point. It sold for $341,000… a good deal more than its pre-sale estimate of $200,000 - $275,000. What’s really funny, is that there was a beautifully restored 356 A Speedster, a color changed car, now wearing black paint over red leather that also sold at Gooding and Co. for $341,000… the exact same amount as this car that is simply a starting point for a multi $100,000 restoration. (Barrett-Jackson) 1967 Mercedes-Benz 250 SL – This car was for sale right here at Sears Imports Mercedes-Benz in Minnetonka during the winter of 2013, for $39,000. The long-time lady owner from St. (Barrett-Jackson) 1970 Morris Minor Pick Up – Cloud traded it in there. About a year later it surfaced at This truck was English white w/ interior and a classic car dealer in south Florida with a few thousand cute as a button. All I could think of when I saw this more miles on it on sale for $79,000. Who knows if one was Mark Brandow and how he NEEDS this truck they ever sold it, but when I saw the tinted glass of to be his parts runner. We could probably buff off the the detachable hard top on this car from a distance I livery that’s on it now and stencil on ‘Quality Coaches’ thought… “No way, could it be?” and I checked the in a couple of hours. It sold for $13,200. serial number against photos I had taken of the car when it was at Sears and they matched. Sold at BJ for $42,900. That’s the meat grinder that is the collector car world sometimes… the car has traveled all over the country and ends up at about the same price as it was when it left the Cities.

(Barrett-Jackson) 1976 Bradley GT – It was late afternoon when we spied this Bradley GT in a row of ‘sold’ cars at Barrett-Jackson. The sun was hitting it just right to really show off its color that we eventually decided to call ‘bowling ball brown metallic’. The huge metallic flakes reminded us of a bass boat or, well, that bowling ball your neighbor used to take to league night. (Barrett-Jackson) 1962 MG A 1600 MK II Roadster Seriously though, of all the VW based cars of the ‘70s, – I must admit, I didn’t look at this car too closely. I’m after the Brubaker Box, the Bradley GT is my favorite. not sure how much it matters to MG folks and I’m not an What I didn’t know, until this particular afternoon, MG A expert, although I’ve been around a lot of them, was that they were made and sold out of the Bradley call me crazy, but I don’t believe British Racing Green facility in Plymouth, MN! We were looking at it and was ever available as a factory color on the MG A. You David said to me, ‘You know, a friend of mine used to see a lot of BRG As today, but I think that’s just because live next door to the guy who made these, they made they’ve been repainted. This car sold for $16,500, less them back home.’ I thought, ‘no way did these come than I would have expected for a decent looking MK II. CONT. out of Minnesota, they’ve got Southern California written all over them.’ A little research on my phone and it turns out that he was right; they were built in Plymouth, MN. Now I like them even more. This was as nice a Bradley as I can remember ever seeing, things fit together pretty well and the interior was nice. It sold for $7,700.

(Russo and Steele) 1984 Volkswagen Vanagon Westfalia Wolfsburg Edition – These have been near and dear to my heart since I quit my first job after college (it was in an office and soul crushing), bought one of these and lived in it for 6 months while travelling the back roads of the United States. While this one had a really nice interior and all of its camping equipment intact, it also had a thick repaint and a Subaru engine (Russo and Steele) 1985 Maserati Quattroporte swap. Normally, I’d be all for the Subaru engine swap. As – Don’t laugh… I know Maseratis from the mid ‘80s my ’82 air cooled model only had 67 HP, a Subaru boxer aren’t necessarily on everyone’s short list, but if you engine swap is a great thing, but this van didn’t run. As ever wanted a Quattroporte this was the one to have. it was pushed over the block they announced that ‘It was It is, by far, the nicest one I’ve ever seen. It was said running yesterday’… well, that doesn’t help today now, to have just 28,436 original miles and after inspecting does it? It still managed to sell for $9,625 which feels like it closely, I believe it. The interior of these cars is good money for a non-running Westfalia. amazing. The seats are like pillowy leather couches. While most are cracked and in bad shape, the seats in this car were perfect. The Anthracite Grey paint was (Russo and excellent, it had service records, and $2,000 was recently Steele) Why spent on the A/C system. Crazy. It must be one of the does this nicest left on the planet. Secretly, I’ve always loved make no these. After college I lived in downtown Chicago and sense? there was a silver one that would be parallel parked on the street, year ‘round. Removing the old carpet from the tunnel involved a hammer and chisel! The first step was to remove the seats which was no big deal – undo 8 bolts and they were out. This gave me an opportunity to look at the seat bottoms and the cushions. Surprisingly, the foam looked to be in decent shape. I expected to find a mouse nest or two but all I saw was old, deteriorating foam and a couple of broken straps on the bottom webbing. I ordered new seat bottom webbing and was ready to go…but wait…gee that carpet really looks bad… I expected to find a mouse nest or two but all I saw was old, deteriorating foam and a couple of broken I ordered a new carpet set. How hard can it be to install a new carpet set straps on the bottom webbing. that is “cut from original factory patterns”? The first step was to pull the old stuff out. It was dirty, dry-rotted and pretty nasty. I was afraid of what I would find under it but other than a few coins, a small amount of surface rust and some bare metal the floors were solid—relief! The tunnel was covered with some black tar-like material and some insulation that was deteriorated. I decided it all had to go. Removing it was much more difficult and time consuming than expected (isn’t everything with an old British car?). After a few hours the tunnel was bare. Yup, it took a hammer and chisel to get it off! Carpet as it looked prior to removal and a piece of the new carpet next to the old. (photo above)

Next step was to remove the remaining “sticky” adhesive, sand and paint all of the bare metal with Rustoleum. Yes, I know it is a poor color match but it will all be under the new carpeting. I figured the tunnel was covered for a reason so a little bit of Dynamat and we’re back in business!

Ready for new carpet! Wait, not yet…I tried trial fitting A fresh coat of Rustoleum for under the carpet and the darn roll bar, which is bolted to the the carpet and some Dynamat! Roll bar reboot while I was in body, is going to make it tough to get a nice fit because there. New hardware and paint! holes would have to be cut in just the right spot to make it look decent – I’m not that good with a scissors. So, out comes the roll bar! Well, now I’m looking at the roll bar mounting hardware and it looks terrible so what to do…..clean up the mounting plates, paint them, and buy new hardware of course!

Back to carpeting – the new rear deck carpeting was wheel, some sanding and painting and they are ready glued in place and now I’m ready to re-install the roll to be installed. bar. The bar appears in good shape, no corrosion, A bit more spray adhesive and some fiddling with just some scuffed paint from the seatbelts rubbing on getting the carpet to fit but the project was coming them until I look at the bottom of the mounting plates. along. One issue I ran into was the cut-out for the There is some old adhesive from the carpet, some bare shifter. It was WAY off – metal and a bit of surface corrosion. I can’t re-install them looking like that can I? A bit of work on the wire Here is the new carpet with a very narrow cut-out for the shifter versus the one that came out of the car. The original carpet was designed to fit on top of the shifter boot

Here is the rear deck with and mounting carpet installed along with plate which I the seat belts and roll bar. thought was a strange way of doing it. So, after cutting, trial fitting, cutting, trial fitting again, etc. the carpet is now under the shifter boot and mounting plate which I think gives it a cleaner look. Oh, and I wanted a cup holder so I can The finished product along have my coffee on the way to the Intermarque breakfast with a new center console. each Saturday so I added the center console. Now to start working on those seats! All of the interior trim panels were removed and cleaned as best I could. Also, all of the panel mounting fasteners were replaced with chrome screws with integral beauty rings. The interior is back together and it looks pretty good if I do say so myself. The only thing missing is the seats….. I guess I got distracted because I think that is where all of this started!
