NIGHTLIGHT: TRADITION AND CHANGE IN A LOCAL MUSIC SCENE Aaron Smithers A thesis submitted to the faculty of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in the Curriculum of Folklore. Chapel Hill 2018 Approved by: Glenn Hinson Patricia Sawin Michael Palm ©2018 Aaron Smithers ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Aaron Smithers: Nightlight: Tradition and Change in a Local Music Scene (Under the direction of Glenn Hinson) This thesis considers how tradition—as a dynamic process—is crucial to the development, maintenance, and dissolution of the complex networks of relations that make up local music communities. Using the concept of “scene” as a frame, this ethnographic project engages with participants in a contemporary music scene shaped by a tradition of experimentation that embraces discontinuity and celebrates change. This tradition is learned and communicated through performance and social interaction between participants connected through the Nightlight—a music venue in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. iii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Any merit of this ethnography reflects the commitment of a broad community of dedicated individuals who willingly contributed their time, thoughts, voices, and support to make this project complete. I am most grateful to my collaborators and consultants, Michele Arazano, Robert Biggers, Dave Cantwell, Grayson Currin, Lauren Ford, Anne Gomez, David Harper, Chuck Johnson, Kelly Kress, Ryan Martin, Alexis Mastromichalis, Heather McEntire, Mike Nutt, Katie O’Neil, “Crowmeat” Bob Pence, Charlie St. Clair, and Isaac Trogden, as well as all the other musicians, employees, artists, and compatriots of Nightlight whose combined efforts create the unique community that define a scene.

While magazines kept publicizing the "death of punk-rock", hardcore became a pervasive movement that did not leave any town (or country) untouched. As if galvanized by its own death, the movement took on a life of its own and became a genre within the genre. In the 1990s that genre, in turn, spawned a number of sub-genres. First and foremost, there was "emocore", the style invented in the late 1980s by Rites Of Spring and the Washington contingent. Their "emotional" hardcore alternated quiet and furious musical parts, admitted moody arrangements, indulged in time changes and mid-tempo rhythms, leveraged emotional singing that could whisper as well as shout within the same song, and was not limited to the short/fast format of hardcore. In other words, it was almost the negation of hardcore. While the genre was, by definition, rather loose, bands that fell into the category during the 1990s included: San Francisco's Jawbreaker, with Unfun (1990); Oregon's Heatmiser, the group of songwriter Elliott Smith and bassist Sam Coomes (formerly of Donner Party), with Dead Air (1993); Los Angeles' Weezer, the most successful of the batch, with Weezer (1994).

The Ninth Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals in San Francisco ruled that Diamond Multimedia's Rio player does not, as the RIAA claimed, violate the Audio Home Recording Act of 1992. The RIAA's appeal was the result of alower-court ruling that rejected the organization's October lawsuit, which alleged that the player violated the 1992 law. The Act requires makers of digital audio recorders to use technology that prevents the re-record- ing of copyrighted music. The court stated that the Act does not apply to the Rio player, because the device does not function primarily as a recorder. The court also said that the players were exempt from the Act since the digital files that Rio downloads come from computer hard drives, and not directly from DATs or CDs.

SOUND RECORDING REVIEWS EDITED BY RICK ANDERSON A Guide to Essential American Indie Rock (1980 – 2005) Vincent J. Novara and Stephen Henry1 Indie rock is a genre of popular music presently attaining more commercial appeal and academic investigation than at any point in its relatively short history. The term “indie rock” was first introduced around 1980 in the United Kingdom where the first charts for independent artists were compiled.2 The genre remains somewhat vaguely defined, but its practitioners are generally characterized by some degree of separation from the business practices and creative control of the large corporations operating major labels. Indie rock is more difficult to define in strictly musical terms, as it contains many subgenres that embrace rock music and other divergent styles equally.3 However, while independence from major labels is of fundamental importance to indie rock, this factor alone is not enough to fully describe the genre.4 Partly as a result of the impulse to remain independent of mainstream expectations, a distinct indie rock sound has developed.5 The hallmarks of this sound 1 Vincent J.
