33 OPEN SOURCE LANGUAGE VERSION > CATALÀ Artistic fabrics, unique portraits (I) by Sílvia Carbonell Basté Textil Museum and Documentation Centre PH.D. student Art History, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona Photographs: ©CDMT, Quico Ortega Conserved in museums and private homes across Catalonia are a series of artistic fabrics – or woven artworks – that share many similarities with engravings and photographs but reflect a unique production technique popularised in a specific period in the history of the textile industry. These limited edition decorative fabrics generally feature portraits of illustrious figures (monarchs, politicians, military leaders, captains of industry), historical, religious or commemorative scenes, or reproductions of famous paintings, created in black and white silk on a Jacquard loom. In Catalonia, the majority of these fabrics were produced over the period between 1862 and 1974. These Jacquard pieces, originally referred to as artistic, or “singular”, fabrics, came to the museums from private owners who recognised their value in marking a crucial period in the transformation of the textile industry. The private collectors who donated the pieces all had a direct link of some sort to textile production, whether as teachers, theorists, merchants or artists. The fact that many of the fabrics bore the company name, the artist’s signature, the production date, or the name of the director and even the school at which they were plotted and weaved makes them, if nothing else, unique pieces, distinct from any other textile produced until that time and freely available on the market. These singular pieces also serve to illustrate the successful marriage of technology with the skill of the artist. -

But we Lutherans are just as grateful to our God for having kept us in the faith again restored to His flock by the great Reformer, and for having guarded us against the deceit of the many false prophets that have gone out into the world since the days of Luther. Among the many pernicious sects which sprang up in the countries blessed of God through the Reformation, the Puritan is one of the most conspicuous. A comparison of Lutheranism with Puritanism would therefore not be Ollt of place nor without valqe to us at this time. Bras. Polít. Int. 58 (2): 65-79 [2015] Introduction The Holy See, as the governing body of the Roman Catholic Church, has been a major player in international politics for many centuries. It has survived many attacks and persecutions, and has remained recognized as the subject of international law and international relations in the contemporary world, which makes it unique among religious organizations. Throughout its long history, the Holy See has survived turmoil. First, in its very beginning, the Roman Empire persecuted Christianity, forcing the early Church to be a clandestine organization whose first leaders were either executed or incarcerated. Then, after the Church was recognized, its status significantly improved. In 754 the Donation of Pepin founded the Papal State, making the Bishop of Rome - now known as the pope - the ruler of the independent state. Still, the papacy faced a new set of troubles. Long lasting conflict with the Holy Roman emperors and a power struggle with the kings of France forced the Holy See to temporarily move its seat to Avignon. During its time in Avignon, the Church did not have dominance in European affairs as it did during much of the rest of the medieval period. The Age of Enlightenment brought even tougher times for the Catholic Church, and Pope Pius VII was even arrested and humiliated by Napoleon at the pinnacle of Napoleon’s military might. -

Lusvardi, SJ The Law of Conscience Catholic Teaching on Conscience from Leo XIII to John Paul II Pope Benedict XVI’s recent trip to Britain has placed Catholic teaching on conscience again in the public eye. On his pilgrimage in September 2010, Benedict beatified the English convert John Hen- ry Newman, among whose most famous writings are those dealing with the dignity of conscience, and the Holy Father’s address to the British Parliament in Westminster Hall repeatedly referred to an- other Englishman important to Catholic thinking on conscience, St. Thomas More. In his Westminster Hall address, the pope suggested that More’s case is particularly relevant in the midst of modern sec- ularism, where it is often advised that Christians serving in public roles “should be required at times to act against their conscience.”1 Much of Catholic social thought on conscience, in fact, could have been written with More’s case in mind. Leo XIII and Pius XI, the two popes who wrote most extensively on conscience between the First and Second Vatican Councils, beatified and canonized More in 1886 and 1935, respectively. Leo and Pius showed par- ticular concern to defend the rights of Catholic consciences against interference from hostile civil governments, and their writings set the stage for the memorable passages in Gaudium et Spes and Dig- logos 15:2 spring 2012 14 logos nitatis Humanae in which Vatican II addressed the subject directly. The Council’s treatment of conscience expands upon these popes’ teaching but remains in essential continuity with the earlier tradi- tion. -

15 March 2021 Dear Brothers and Lasallians, In 1871, Pope Pius IX declared Saint Joseph Patron of the Catholic Church. On the 150th anniversary of the declaration, Pope Francis declared 2021 a special Year of Saint Joseph “in which each member of the faithful, by his example, can daily strengthen his or her own life of faith in the full fulfillment of the will of God".1 The devotion of our Founder to Saint Joseph is well known. Days before his death, John Baptist de La Salle urged his Brothers to have a special devotion to this Guardian of Jesus and the Patron of our Institute. Saint Joseph is our model: Joseph, the man of confidence and faith in God; Joseph, the just and humble man. With Mary he raised and educated Jesus.2 In his biography of the Founder, Canon Blain explains De La Salle’s devotion to Saint Joseph: What struck him most in the admirable life of the holy spouse of the Mother of God was his great docility to the action of Divine Providence, his submission to the most vexing commands, his prompt obedience to the voice of the Lord, his hidden life, his angelic chastity and, finally, his tenderness and love for Jesus and Mary. Virtues of this great saint that he longed to imitate.3 I invite you to join the People of God and the entire Institute in celebrating the Year of Saint Joseph. In a special way, let us ask our Patron to accompany us as we compassionately respond to the sickness and suffering caused by the pandemic. -

This study extends previous research by analyzing what the Catholic Church has said over the course of centuries on issues related to society, economics, and the environment, as embodied in the core concepts of subsidiarity, solidarity, stewardship, the common good, and integral human development. -

HOTEL PALACIO PROVINCIAL § According to the NRHP*, the Old San Juan Historic District is the oldest European settlement in Puerto Rico and the United States and the second one continuously inhabited in the American continent. It is historically documented that the Viejo San Juan had the first municipal government in the America continent after the city of Santo Domingo in neighboring Hispaniola. § The Old San Juan Historic District’s distribution and organization of the urban core by means of an HOTEL PALACIO orthogonal grid was inspired by European Renaissance ideas, particularly Italian of Classical PROVINCIAL extraction. § The Old San Juan Historic District has the oldest house, Christian temple, executive mansion, convent and military defenses in the United States. All of these structures can be found within this unique core that includes the Diputación Provincial building. *National Register of Historic Places To this day, the square bordering the Plaza de Armas is considered the heart of Old San Juan. In addition to this symbolic role as center of the urban core, the space continues to anchor the seats of both the island-wide and municipal governments, something it has done since the 17th century. By the 19th century and although the Spanish monarchy was not organized into independent branches (i e executive, legislative, and judicial), all the buildings relevant to the administration of the city and the island – Casa Alcaldiá , Real Intendencia and Diputacioń Provincial – were located around this neuralgic square. -
