FROM THE JUNIOR LIBRARY THANKS TO KEVIN EADIE Over the last few years Kevin who drives our school bus in his retirement has taken an interest in our Library and donated books he has just finished reading. Kevin takes the trouble to think about what our student might be interested in and donates intelligently. Once again our Libraries are grateful for his thoughtfulness in donating The end of the Chinese Dream by Gerard Lemos.

NEW RESOURCES OUT ON SHELVES THIS WEEK

LIBRARY EVENTS COMING UP • An author visit by Scott Gardiner to Year 9&10 • The Junior Library Amateur Chess Competition

DISPOSED BOOKS It is 15 year old book disposal time in the Junior Library. Many of these books are still really good reads and some are classically good. It is just that their time has come. Students are invited to take a small hoard home for holiday reading if they wish. See blue grey shelves beside the bag racks. Mrs Crothers Teacher-Librarian

What’s Up in the McDonald Senior Library? 2nd August, 2013

2013 in the Senior Library has been busy with many more students making use of our facilities for study, assignments and accessing resources than ever before! The addition of new resources has meant that our borrowing has increased markedly since the Senior Library was established, when borrowing was primarily done by Seniors from the Junior Library. These days Senior students are finding required reading, research and high interest materials in the Senior library.

The development of our collection has focused on the addition of prize winning and literary fiction for English studies, wide reading materials for Years 10 & 11, HSC related texts, Asian literature in English, Indigenous literature, curriculum related and high interest non-fiction, biographies, poetry and short story collections and study guides.

Several of our senior students have been helping out with specific projects in the Senior Library. Senior Library prefect, Albert Chau has been engaged in a project to collect and make available previous exam papers for loan to other Senior students in the library. These will add to our useful and popular collection of study guides to assist students to revise for upcoming examinations including the HSC.

Many other students have assisted us in various library tasks including shelving, shelf tidying, processing of books, and many other jobs. Michael Cui has been analysing our library statistics and has produced a report on how the Senior Library is utilised. Anes Karahasan has been responsible for adding new books to our new library resources section on the school website. Others who have been regular, keen and reliable volunteers include Justin Ng, Daniel Zhang (11F), Alan Qi and Samuel Lin. We are extremely grateful for the work of all our volunteers who have made it possible to provide extra services in the Senior Library and assist us to add new resources so that they are available for loan much faster.

This activity has the dual benefit of giving the boys valuable experience (and award points!) and providing extra much needed help to the library staff.

The Year 10 State Library program is once again in progress with most students joining and learning how to access this outstanding collection of resources.

Finally, both libraries are extremely grateful for the generous donation of books by an old boy of the school Gregory Babic, who has passed away but left his entire collection of books to Sydney Boys High! Many are suitable and in almost new condition and these will be added to both library collections with gratitude. They will supplement the addition of many new resources selected specifically and bought this year. Ms Gordon Teacher-Librarian

Students Assist Sir Roden & Lady Cutler Foundation

During the first week of the July holidays, ten boys volunteered to help the drivers who volunteer throughout the year for the Sir Roden & Lady Cutler Foundation. Two students per day helped the drivers assist their elderly and/or disadvantaged clients with errands, conversation and getting in and out of the vehicle. I had the opportunity to be a part of this experience and meet new people travelling from their homes to medical practitioners and centres. The experience was interesting and reflects the responsibility and commitment of my fellow students to make significant and valuable contributions to society on behalf of their school . Following is one of the many interesting stories shared by the clients with the vehicle’s occupants: Winston Churchill was quite a heavy drinker and smoker. Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery confronted him, saying “I neither drink nor smoke and I am 100% fit”. Churchill responded, “I drink and smoke and I am 200% fit.” This reminded me so profoundly of the fact that these people live and exist as human beings, with rights, stories and a history. By participating in this volunteering service, I was honoured to have heard part of their story and to have respected, acknowledged and helped them. This stresses the importance of supporting them in their already difficult lives, which are compounded by medical limitations.

I encourage current and future Year 11 students to volunteer one day of their school holidays to undertake this small worthwhile experience. Thank you to those who have already participated; strengthening the ties between SBHS and Sir Roden Cutler & Lady Cutler Foundation with their involvement in this important student volunteering project.

SBHS RUGBY High Rugby = High Spirit

Please check out the updated Rugby website where all information on Rugby is located. http://www.sydneyhigh.org.au/rugby/ High vs King’s The second GPS game showed the results of many weeks of hard training and the advantage of having one last trial against Kinross Wolaroi last weekend. Only one junior team lost and the seniors were very competitive.

Team of the week – 15As – Came back from 14-7, to win 19-12 Play of the week –.Jeffrey Ye’s barge over try in the 14As game

Barbecue Rugby players and supporters please come down to the Rugby canteen, located next to McKay 1 at the Fairland pavilion, and enjoy some great food while watching the home games.

16Bs team report After the large loss against the Orange boys of Kinross the previous week, Sydney High 16B players were eager to employ the same running rugby tactics against the King’s side. Through good control and “pick and drive” forward moves, the platform was laid for the backs to complete a convincing victory of seven tries to one. The first half saw Sydney High blow the opposition out of the game, with enthusiastic running from Michael Jun, Maddison Wu and all of the forwards combined with excellent ball control. This allowed the halves, Julian Vo and Nathan Wang-Ly to exploit openings and run the outside backs onto good attacking ball. It was the forwards who scored first, with No 8, Jack Hutchison driving his way over the line from about ten metres out after a series of attacking runs by both forwards and backs. Score: 5-0 Not to be outdone, the backs played the ball to the wing and set Andrew Nam off down the sideline and although many King’s defenders tried to tackle him, he scored a great try in the corner. Score: 10-0. After another attacking foray deep into King’s territory, Jack Hutchison charged over again for a try. Score: 15-0. The game was being really well controlled by the High team and the Kings players could not seem to match the same level of intensity of the brown and blue 16Bs. Probably the most popular try scored in the first half went to a fine individual effort from five–eighth Nathan Wang–Ly . Nathan is playing very good rugby at the moment and enjoying the freedom of playing at first five. Half Time Score 20-0. The second half was similar to the first half or for at least the first fifteen minutes, with High attacking, controlling the ball, pick and drive by the forwards and straight hard running from the backs. This resulted in tries for Maddison Wu and two great tries for Daniel Haslam, who was a second half substitute and he was well rewarded for running hard at the opposition and using the palm off with great aplomb. Although High players tired a little in the last fifteen minutes allowing King’s to launch a number of good comeback attacks, they only managed to score one try which was unconverted. Julian Vo converted two of the Sydney High tries in the second half leaving the final Score 39-5. G Moody (16Bs coach)

Weekend Results The AAGPS season kicked off in fine style with High being hosted by Scots at our home of football, Dave Phillips Sports Complex. After a long pre-season, everyone was looking to get down to business and had it not been for a top shelf performance from the Scots keeper, the 1st XI might have earned their first win of the GPS season. Time and time again, High was denied – firstly with Daniel Arzani seeing his shot bound for the top corner parried away, then Jaan Pallandi being denied twice in short succession. As it was, Scots took the ascendency immediately after the half time break, scoring two quick goals on the back of errors and a slice of misfortune. It would have been easy for the High boys to drop their heads and fold, but football is a funny game and showing courage and determination, High were able to fight their way back to parity courtesy of two Pallandi strikes. In the end it finished 2-2, with both teams feeling they’d left two points on the park.

Coach Mehdi Hazrati said he was overjoyed with the fight displayed by the squad to produce the comeback. “Every player out there gave maximum effort and they should all be proud of this result”.

The 15As continue to prove why many people are whispering about High’s premiership chances in upcoming years, dismantling Scots 4-0 despite being wasteful in front of goal. High not only played winning football, but displayed the true characteristics of the beautiful game, according to coach Paul Fasullo. “It was so pleasing to see tremendous school spirit which is getting stronger each week which should be held in strong regard by the whole school. The boys are showing great determination to bring success to the school which was a joy to watch and all the parents were so proud.”

Winter Sports Assembly On Friday July 26th, the Winter Sports Assembly was addressed by Mr Paul Reid, Community Development Officer for Sydney FC. Mr Reid is a professional footballer, with stints at Sydney FC and Adelaide United in the A-League as well as Bradford City and Brighton & Hove Albion in the English Championship. He stressed the importance of time management, citing his ability to play professional football at the same time as completing a university degree, a message of great importance – especially to those Year 12 boys about to enter the exam period. We would like to thank Paul for his motivational message and wish Sydney FC all the best in the upcoming A-League season and we look forward to building a relationship between Sydney FC and Sydney Boys High.

Fixtures vs King’s – 3rd August 2013

Round 2 of competition sees High taking on The King’s School and it will be another major test for the 1st XI, with King’s coming off the back of a 4-0 victory over Grammar. Having also defeated Grammar by a similar margin in the pre-season, this should be a close match up and all boys are encouraged to support other teams throughout the day. The support at David Phillips on Saturday was immense and it gave the boys a massive boost and in no small part contributed to the stunning comeback. Captain Arjun Punekar spoke about the importance of a crowd at the Winter Sports Assembly and we would like to thank all the boys who came down – especially those from 1st & 2nd XV rugby whose chants and encouragement gave the game a real atmosphere.

First Grade Report Following our loss to Grammar last week, there was some residual disappointment. Our training through the week had increased our team cohesion, particularly an extremely gruelling training session that brought the team together through shared hardship more than anything else. As such, we felt well prepared both mentally and physically going into our game against Riverview.

Unfortunately, many players were unable to make the game on Saturday resulting in several second grade players playing up. These players played extremely well and promise good things for future seasons and the Nationals tournament later this year. As such, we were able to convincingly defeat Riverview in straight sets – hopefully we can continue the level of mental control that allowed us to play aggressively and controlled through all the stages of the sets. Jonathan Clements-Lendrum

Second Grade Report Last Saturday 2nd Grade played St Ignatius. Having dropped a set to their team in our previous confrontation, we were eager to win in straight sets this time around. As a result we started out strong, winning the first set very convincingly at 25-16. The adjustment from having one setter to two near the end of the first set went without a hitch, and we continued play comfortably. The second set went well too, with High 2nds winning it convincingly as well, 25-19. However despite having a comfortable lead, we realised that almost every one of our spikes were heading out, only to be saved by someone from the opposing side. It was this realisation that made us relax our attack slightly in the 3rd set, tipping the ball over more than previously. Iggies took advantage of this, and their loud demeanour meant they could confidently remain in the game. As the scores each drew closer to 25 we were reminded of our last match against Ignatius, when we dropped the 3rd set due to lack of communication and poor attack. It was neck and neck well past 25, but in the end we managed to pull ahead to secure the final set 31-29. With a set score of 3-0, we won the match and retained our undefeated status. Calum York

The social media categories are: Mobile Snaps ‐ a photograph taken on a mobile, ipod, ipad or on instagram Language ‐ a photograph that depicts an aspect of Chinese language

Teachers are also encouraged to enter in a separate Open category.

Individuals can submit as many photos as they like, however only one image per category. Images can also only be submitted to a single category (for example if the photo is of friends eating a meal, the entrant must decide between the ‘people’ or ‘food’ categories, and cannot enter the image in both).

Exhibition Day After the competition has closed and images judged, ECP will put on an exhibition to display all of the entrants and hand out awards. This will be a daytime event, running from 10AM – 1pm and held at a Chinese affiliated venue, . This will be held on Wednesday 18 September, during the week of Chinese mid‐ autumn festival and the last week of term 3.

Awards and Prizes ECP will enlist judges involved in Aus‐China relations to select outstanding images from each of the five main categories and the teacher category. These students and teachers will receive awards on the exhibition day. There will also be people’s choice awards for the social media categories (determined by the number of likes on Facebook). These winners will also be awarded on exhibition day. The schools that the winning students are from will also receive prizes.

Timeline The photography competition component of this project will be open for 3 weeks.

Monday August 19 9.00am Competition opens for submissions Friday September 6 9:00am Competition closes Friday September 6 by 5:00pm All schools submit their students’ and teachers’ photographs

Before and at the beginning of the competition period ECP ambassadors will be involved in marketing and promotional activities at schools throughout the city, where posters and flyers will be distributed. After the competition closes one and a half weeks will be taken to sort, review and judge images before the exhibition on Wednesday 18 September. Winning and highly commended photographs will be printed for the exhibition. ECP ambassadors are also available to conduct Asia‐literacy presentations or workshops during the period they are visiting schools. More information on Engaging China Project packages are below. ECP ambassadors can also be involved in helping schools conduct excursions to China town where students could take photographs for the competition.
