Democracy in Islam Khatab-FM.qxd 23/5/07 4:44 PM Page i Democracy In Islam Whether Islam can give rise to human rights and democracy is a deep concern for Western politicians and policy makers. Those who raise it fear that the hard-won human rights enjoyed by many citizens of Western democracies will be lost if Muslims are integrated into their societies. It is also easy for the concern about Islam’s capacity and inclination for human rights and democratic values to be characterised as a ‘clash of civilisations’. Thus, the issue of Islam and democracy is part of a global or larger contestation affecting nation states and political and religious stripes. Based on Islam’s authoritative sources, this book speaks about this global ferment by demonstrating that the political agendas promoting democracy and human values can be grounded in the Qur’an and the life of the Prophet. By exposing on Islamic politics of human rights and democracy grounded in the Qur’an, it demonstrates Islam’s compatibility with liberal democracy and its values in the realm of government and law, with special focus on what is already established concerning the political and sociological propensities upon which the democratic attitude towards the self – and the attitude towards the other – are based and regarding the assets upon which the democratic system in any society depends. Particular topics covered include: ● principles of Islam’s political theory and the notion of democracy therein; ● the notion of jihad and its qualification; ● Islam and human rights; ● the value and contribution of Islamic legal ideas to European legal philosophy and law. This concise and comprehensive study offers a balanced understanding of the debated issue of democracy and Islam in post-September 11 interreligious, intercultural and international relations. It will be suitable for scholars, political commentators, students and policy makers alike. Sayed Khatab is a Research Fellow in the School of Political and Social Inquiry and the Global Terrorism Research Centre at Monash University, Australia. His recent publications include The Political Thought of Sayyid Qutb: The Theory of Jahiliyyah (Routledge, 2006) and The Power of Sovereignty: The Political and Ideological Philosophy of Sayyid Qutb (Routledge, 2006). Religion has re-entered politics in many ways in most parts of the world. Historical markers for this resurgence include the overthrow of the Shah of Iran and the attempts to develop local responsible government in Algeria. Although politically active Islam has received the lion’s share of media and policy attention, it is not alone in experiencing renewed political engagement.

In the present study, the distinctiveness of al-Durr becomes evident in comparison with the tafsīrs of al- a arī (d. 310/923) and I n Kathīr (d. 774/1373). Al-Suyūṭī surpassed these exegetes by relying entirely on ḥadīth (tradition). Al-Suyūṭī rarely offers a comment of his own. Thus, in terms of its formal features, al-Durr is the culmination of tradition- based exegesis (tafsīr bi-l-ma’thūr). This study also shows that al-Suyūṭī intended in al-Durr to subtly challenge the tradition- ased hermeneutics of I n Taymīyah (d. 728/1328). According to Ibn Taymīyah, the true, unified, interpretation of the Qurʼān must be sought in the Qurʼān ii itself, in the traditions of Muḥammad, and in the exegeses of the earliest Muslims. Moreover, I n Taymīyah strongly denounced opinion-based exegesis (tafsīr bi-l-ra’y).

Where once democracy seemed like a small island in a sea of authoritarian states, with an uncertain future, it now is proclaimed as the inevitable endpoint of human political evolution (Fukuyama 1992). Data from the Freedom House illustrate this development. In 1950, only 14.3% of the countries (and colonial units) in the world were democracies, which included 31% of the world’s population. In 1990, the Freedom House considered 46.1% of the nations in the world as democracies.

Kemudian Khawarij ini juga ada yang ekstrem dan yang moderat. Menurut Fazlur Rahman nama Khawarij tak berimplikasi bid’ah dari segi doktrin, melainkan sebatas pemberontak atau pelaku revolusi. Adapun rumusan masalah dalam penelitian ini adalah: Bagaimana eksistensi khawarij saat ini. Bagaimana Khawarij menurut pemikiran Fazlur Rahman. In effect, non-Muslims and Muslim scholars neglect the full range of Prophet Muhammad’s statements about Jesus that are in the Hadīth. The dissertation’s main thesis is that an examination of the Hadīths’ reports of Muhammad’s words about and attitudes toward ‘Īsā will lead to fuller understandings about Jesus-‘Īsā among Muslims and propose to non-Muslims new insights into Christian tradition about Jesus. In the latter process, non-Muslims will be encouraged to re-examine past hostile views concerning Muhammad and his words about Jesus. A minor thesis is that Western readers in particular, whether or not they are Christians, will be aided to understand Islamic beliefs about ‘Īsā, prophethood, and eschatology more fully. The process of reconstruction requires at first the collection and organisation of the relevant material, since Aristotle's references to democracy, although numerous, are scattered throughout his political and ethical writings. A chapter is devoted to this task. This chapter also seeks to describe the historical and intellectual context in which Aristotle developed his ideas on democracy. Every place has been decorated. In every place joyful and cheerful gatherings can be seen. The enthusiasm and happiness of the Shi’ites on this auspicious day is apparent everywhere. Indeed, what day is revered like this day by people with such elation and glory? The fifteenth of Sha'ban is the day in which the Shiites saw the fulfilment of the glad tidings of the divine messengers. It is on his birthday that he will bring the east and west of the world to justice, and by his powerful hand annihilate demons, infidelity and irreligiousness. On this day, the authority of the Last Luminous Jewel of Allah will be established on the face of the earth.

    Democracy Out of Joint? The Financial Crisis in Light of Hegel’s Philosophy of Right Karin de Boer I. Introduction The financial crisis that currently besets Europe not only disturbs the life of many citizens, but also affects our economic, political and philosophical theories. Clearly, many of the contributing causes, such as the wide availability of cheap credit after the introduction of the euro, are contingent. Analyses that aim to move beyond such contingent factors tend to highlight the disruptive effects of the neoliberal conception of the market that has become increasingly dominant over the last few decades. Yet while the financial sector has received most of the blame, and rightly so, few commentators seem willing to take into account the role played by representative democracy in its current form.1 Even if it is granted that actual democratic policies fall short of what they ought to achieve, contemporary representative democracy itself is seldom regarded as part of the tangle it was supposed to resolve. David Merill touches upon this issue when he notes, in the preceding issue of this Bulletin, that ‘the economic dilemmas faced today may be ultimately the consequences of state failure’.2 The state that has failed to regulate the markets is described as ‘weak’ and ‘subject to external blows, blind to its ends, merely one actor among many in the events of the day’ (Merill 2012: 28). Yet Merill does not seem to consider this weakness to be an inherent feature of the constellation of which contemporary democracy is a part. There are, of course, excellent reasons not to take this path.
