"I imagine people [will be] sipping their merlot and chardonnay while the Derelicts [are going] 'WAAAAHHHHHH,'" Arm chuckles. https://www.inlander.com/spokane/mudhoneys-mark-arm-and-the-derelicts-duane-bodenheimer-are-bringing-the-90s-to-the-21st-century/Content?oid=17585151 1/9 B6/1ot1/2019h bands stMudhoney'sarted ro Markugh Armly w andit hthein Derelicts' six m Duaneonth Bodenheimers of each bring ot hthee '90sr in to S thee a21stttl centurye, in t| Musiche e Newsra k n| Spokaneown a | sThe th Pacifice ca Northwestlm bef oInlandre t…he grunge storm. Duane Bodenheimer, voice of the Derelicts, recalls getting into what turned out to be a playful rumble with Arm at a house party in 1987. "I think I called him a hippie," says Bodenheimer. "Or, 'Get a haircut,' or something like that. He made a snide remark back at me, we kinda wrestled on the ground for a while, and then just ended up laughing. We became friends after that." Arm has had the privilege of having one foot in the dingy, urine-scented punk-club circuit and the other in the household-name rock star crowd for the better part of 35 years. A CliffsNotes summary of Mudhoney would deem the band as the runt of the grunge litter, and the last living authentic grunge band for those who consume and embrace '90s flannel culture. But for most others, Mudhoney is a snarky, freakishly talented group of punk record geeks who were in the right place at the right time. Always channeling (and championing) influences, the Mudhoney you've heard on record since 1988 has been relatively consistent. Thrown into a blender is Black Flag, the Stooges, Leigh Stephens-sounding fuzz and the grit of '70s and '80s Australian punk. Sometimes primitive garage ruckus like the Troggs makes its way into the mix, as do surges of '80s hardcore like Negative Approach or Government Issue. One element in the makeup of Mudhoney that has ceased to regress is the dark satire and brilliantly uncomfortable humor that coats the lyrics. Arm has had fun mocking plenty of sensitive topics over the years: grunge fandom in 1992's "Suck You Dry," pro-life rhetoric in 1995's "F.D.K. (Fearless Doctor Killers)" and the reality of what social media has become in last year's "Kill Yourself Live." Though Arm laughs off the possibility of satire going extinct, he does acknowledge more people are rejecting any form of expression outside of their comfort zones. "The way that things are going with 'fake news' — and I'm talking about the real fake news, like conspiracy shit that gets thrown around on social media — people are predisposed to want to believe a certain thing," Arm says. "And no matter how outrageous [it is], it sort of reinforces their view system to just go with it." If Arm's lyrical content mostly focuses on ever- growing societal absurdities, the man who'll be Cat Rose photo howling before him this weekend tends to exorcise The Derelicts' Duane Bodenheimer. demons from within. Life of Strife will mark the first full-length from the Derelicts since 1989's Love Machine. A handful of singles, EPs and appearances on compilations peppered the years following their debut, but any momentum the band had in the early '90s was derailed by excessive partying and the heroin bug that has plagued countless musicians. The band's implosion occurred right around the time Seattle was the epicenter of pop culture (and right around the time Mudhoney landed a major label deal). Thus, the Derelicts folded. "I went head-on into drug addiction," Bodenheimer admits. "I lost everything, I was homeless. I almost lost an arm and a leg... literally." After relocating to Denver, Bodenheimer got clean and was inspired to start making music again after seeing his old friends in Seattle hardcore band Zeke come through Mile High City. A friend would later suggest to Bodenheimer that his former band should reunite, and in 2014 — more than 20 years after the breakup — the Derelicts returned to the stage together at Capitol Hill's metal club the Highline. Retooled with a new rhythm section, the Derelicts have recaptured the menacing live show that escaped their grip a quarter-century earlier. When asked what the biggest difference is between the two incarnations of the Derelicts (aside from age or health), Bodenheimer says with a laugh, "We don't physically hit each other anymore." ♦ Mudhoney and the Derelicts • Sat, May 11 at 9 pm • Sold out • 21+ • Lucky You Lounge • 1801 W. • “Grunge Killed Glam Metal” Narrative by Holly Johnson
The Interplay of Authority, Masculinity, and Signification in the “Grunge Killed Glam Metal” Narrative by Holly Johnson A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Music and Culture Carleton University Ottawa, Ontario © 2014, Holly Johnson ii Abstract This thesis will deconstruct the "grunge killed '80s metal” narrative, to reveal the idealization by certain critics and musicians of that which is deemed to be authentic, honest, and natural subculture. The central theme is an analysis of the conflicting masculinities of glam metal and grunge music, and how these gender roles are developed and reproduced. I will also demonstrate how, although the idealized authentic subculture is positioned in opposition to the mainstream, it does not in actuality exist outside of the system of commercialism. The problematic nature of this idealization will be examined with regard to the layers of complexity involved in popular rock music genre evolution, involving the inevitable progression from a subculture to the mainstream that occurred with both glam metal and grunge. I will illustrate the ways in which the process of signification functions within rock music to construct masculinities and within subcultures to negotiate authenticity. iii Acknowledgements I would like to thank firstly my academic advisor Dr. William Echard for his continued patience with me during the thesis writing process and for his invaluable guidance. I also would like to send a big thank you to Dr. James Deaville, the head of Music and Culture program, who has given me much assistance along the way.

LANZAMIENTO 15/9/2014 Side One GET YOUNG EARLY BRIGHT YOU HAVE A BELL BE ALL END ALL PRODUCTION SEDAN OWNER/OPERATOR Side Two HOW IN HEAVEN’S NAME GRATITUDE DANCE WITH A DRINK IN YOUR HAND GOOD SPORT ANYTHING NICE WAITING FOR THE SNOW THE TRIPWIRES son un combo all-star que llega desde Seattle enarbolando la bandera del power-pop.

  • DKT/MC5 Sonic Revolution
Listen mister, back in my day, blotter was 25 cents a hit and we had to walk two miles uphill to get it! And we liked it! Wayne Kramer is not someone who normally seems into beaming—his image is a little more ferocious than that. But onstage during the second night of the DKT-MC5 tour in Chicago, Kramer busted loose a big fat grin and started jumping up and down at one point. Back in the MC5 days, the band was known for its energetic, physical shows. Having never seen them live, I don't know if they ever jumped for pure joy back then, but that's clearly what Kramer was doing that night. The reunion of the surviving members of the MC5 (guitarist Kramer, bassist Michael Davis and drummer Dennis Thompson)—along with resurrections of the Stooges and the New York Dolls—is showing a renewed interest in these progenitors of punk rock. "It's surprising to me and it should be surprising to Iggy and those guys how much influence and affect our two bands have had on music now," Davis said. "I'm kind of in awe of it. We've had this kind of effect. And it's one thing to do something that people DKT/MC5 admire a lot, and go, 'That was really cool Sonic Revolution: Live At London's 100 stuff,' but to have this much influence is really Club [DVD] surprising to me." 2004 Image He continued: "I thought it was great, but I The DKT/MC5 gig at London's 100 Club never thought it was so foundational to the was the first salvo in what has become a future.

  • Psychobilly Psychosis and the Garage Disease in Athens
IAFOR Journal of Cultural Studies Volume 5 – Issue 1 – Spring 2020 Psychobilly Psychosis and the Garage Disease in Athens Michael Tsangaris, University of Piraeus, Greece Konstantina Agrafioti, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece Abstract The complexity and the bizarre nature of Psychobilly as a music genre and as a music collectivity make it very convenient for reconsidering several views in relation to subcultures, neo-tribes and scenes. More specifically, the case of Greek Psychobilly can categorically present how subcultural trends can be disseminated across gender, social classes and national borders. This study aims to trace historically the scene of Psychobilly in Athens based on typical ethnographic research and analytic autoethnography. The research question is: Which are the necessary elements that can determine the existence of a local music scene? Supported by semi-structured interviews, the study examines how individuals related to the Psychobilly subculture comprehend what constitutes the Greek Psychobilly scene. Although it can be questionable whether there ever was a Psychobilly scene in Athens, there were always small circles in existence into which people drifted and stayed for quite a while, constituting the pure core of the Greek Psychobilly subculture. Keywords: psychobilly, music genres, Athens, Post-subcultural Theory 31 IAFOR Journal of Cultural Studies Volume 5 – Issue 1 – Spring 2020 Introduction According to the American Countercultures Encyclopaedia, Psychobilly is a subculture that emerged in the 1980s from the unlikely combination of rockabilly and punk rock. The provocative and sometimes outrageous style associated with psychobillies (also known as “psychos”) mixes the blue-collar rawness and rebellion of 1950s rockabilly with the confrontational do-it-yourself style of 1970s punk rock, a syncretism infused with themes from monster and horror films, campy sci-fi movies, and even professional wrestling” (Wojcik, 2013, p.

  • Krist Novoselic, Dave Grohl, and Kurt Cobain
f Krist Novoselic, Dave Grohl, and Kurt Cobain (from top) N irvana By David Fricke The Seattle band led and defined the early-nineties alternative-rock uprising, unleashing a generation s pent-up energy and changing the sound and future of rock. THIS IS WHAT NIRVANA SINGER-GUITARIST KURT Cobain thought of institutional honors in rock & roll: When his band was photographed for the cover of Rolling Stone for the first time, in early 1992, he arrived wearing a white T-shirt on which he’d written, c o r p o r a t e m a g a z i n e s s t i l l s u c k in black marker. The slogan was his twist on one coined by the punk-rock label SST: “Corporate Rock Still Sucks.” The hastily arranged photo session, held by the side of a road during a manic tour of Australia, was later recalled by photogra pher Mark Seliger: “I said to Kurt, T think that’s a great shirt... but let’s shoot a couple with and without it.’ Kurt said, ‘No, I’m not going to take my shirt off.’” Rolling Stone ran his Fuck You un-retouched. ^ Cobain was also mocking his own success. At that moment, Nirvana - Cobain, bassist Krist Novoselic, and drummer Dave Grohl - was rock’s biggest new rock band, propelled out of a long-simmering postpunk scene in Seattle by its incendiary second album, N everm ind, and an improbable Top Ten single, “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” Right after New Year’s Day 1992, Nevermind - Nirvana’s first major-label release and a perfect monster of feral-punk challenge and classic-rock magne tism, issued to underground ecstacy just months before - had shoved Michael Jackson’s D angerous out of the Number One spot in B illboard.

  • The Evolution of Emo and Its Theoretical Implications 175
The Evolution of Emo and Its Theoretical Implications 175 Mirosław Aleksander Miernik The Evolution of Emo and Its Theoretical Implications The purpose of this article is to analyze how emo, a youth subculture, evolved in the United States during a period of approximately twenty five years, since the mid-1980s, particularly focusing on how it changed in regard to the zeitgeist of the time period, as well as how it appropriated various elements of past subcultures into itself in order to create its own subcultural identity. Special attention will be paid to the third incarnation, which emerged at the beginning of the twenty-first century and proved to be the most widespread variation of the subculture. It is also interesting how this incarnation was affected by historical events such as the Columbine High School Massacre and 9/11. The theoretical implications of emo are the second issue that this article at- tempts to tackle. In particular, when viewed from the perspective of post-subculture studies, it allows one to revisit certain theories of the Centre for Contemporary Cultural Studies at the University of Birmingham (CCCS), which pioneered sub- culture studies in the 1960s and 70s. The relationship between post-subculture studies and the CCCS’s approach has always been very complex. Even though many representatives of post-subculture studies criticized the CCCS for various shortcomings, most significantly for an a priori approach that ignores empirical evidence and limits the concept of authenticity within subcultures (Muggleton 19–30). At the same time, the work of the CCCS has been always treated with respect and considered a milestone.

How did a five-letter word meaning dirt, filth, trash become synonymous with a musical genre, a fashion statement, a pop phenomenon? . In 1988, a fledgling Seattle record label called Sub Pop released a three-boxed set called "Sub Pop 200." It was a compilation of bands like Nirvana, Soundgarden and Mudhoney, and it came complete with a 20-page booklet packed with pictures by Charles Peterson, the photographer credited with creating grunge's hair-sweat-and-guitars look. Sub Pop also sent a catalogue to the nation's alternative-rock intelligentsia describing its bands' punk-metal guitar noise as "grunge," the first documented use of the now-ubiquitous term. "It could have been sludge, grime, crud, any word like that," said Jonathan Poneman, a Sub Pop founder. Grunge stuck, maybe because it so vividly evoked both the black-noise sound and the smelly- caveman look. Ratty rec-room chic has been hibernating since the 70's, emerging from the basement every so often in movies like "River's Edge," "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure" and "Wayne's World." This generation of greasy Caucasian youths in ripped jeans, untucked flannel and stomping boots spent their formative years watching television…, listening to old Black Sabbath albums and dreaming of the day they would trade in their air guitars for the real thing, so that they, too, could become famous rock-and-roll heroes.
