ACKNOWLEDGMENTS Graduate school is a process, which as one professor promised me, ends all too soon. For me it has been a process of learning, sharing, and growing. None of which I have done alone. Rather, my own growth and development as a sociologist has been encouraged and nurtured by the many kind and devoted professors and staff members I have encountered along the way. I thank first, Professor Khleif, for the time and effort he spent reading and commenting on each and every chapter of this dissertation. Throughout this process his knowledge, perspective, and faith in me have helped me to persevere. While there are many ways to "do" sociology, I feel fortunate to have had a director who values qualitative approaches and the exploration of meaning. In my coursework with Professor Khleif and through this project I learned to be open to ideas, to be a voice for those who have none, to listen carefully for the meaning and feelings which underlie social behavior, and that compassion is the real first rule of the sociological method. I owe a depth of gratitude to Professor Duncan. The years I spent working with her on her research projects were the most interesting and exciting of my graduate school career, and I am a different person because of it. She spent tremendous amounts of time and energy helping me understand the nature of power, stratification, and social injustice; and nurtured in me the desire to dig deep for answers. Her comments and suggestions for this project, as well as her encouragement, were extremely helpful. I feel fortunate to have started graduate school at the University of New Hampshire shortly before Professor Donnelly arrived, and to have had the opportunity to become one of his students. His interest in history as an avenue to understanding the social world was a model for me, and gave me the confidence to embark on the historical portion of this dissertation. Professor Donnelly's early comments and insights helped me to think more clearly about what it was I was really trying to understand, and how I might integrate data and theory in a writing style which would let the story unfold. These three individuals have been my guides, throughout graduate school and for this project. They have been teachers, confidants, and friends. I thank them all for their time and encouragement, but most of all for their teaching: that unselfish act of sharing yourself and your ideas with others. I thank also Professor Hardy for agreeing to serve on my committee and for his very helpful comments during the early stages of my writing. Also, for sharing with me invaluable resources on the history of women's collegiate sport, without which I would have floundered for some time. Maybe ifs sociology, or maybe its UNH, but I have always valued the cooperative approach of other UNH students, the "we're in this together" attitude. I think it is a reflection of the leadership in the Department and the nature of the faculty; whatever the source, it made doing my graduate degree at UNH more pleasurable. This project would not have been possible without the women who took time out of their busy work lives to talk to me; who shared with me their joys and struggles. Perhaps it is part of the research process, or maybe it's just me, but I always feel a bit guilty about "stealing” peoples' time, and "peering" into their worlds for my own selfish ends. It is an unfair exchange, I take everything and give nothing back. The women I interviewed were candid, open, and honest...so much so that at times it felt like a burden whose only relief would be to do justice to their stories-get them right, so to speak. My greatest motivation throughout this project has been to "get it right.” I hope I have done so. It is the only way I know of thanking all of them. Finally, this project would not have been possible without the love and understanding of those closest to me. Ali, who let me stay out of the labor market and put up with a dictator of a boss, and continues to commute back and forth to Boston so I could finish school; who learned to go to social gatherings without me, for years, and developed a thick skin when people stopped understanding why I couldn't come; who put up with tirades and tears knowing that they wouldn't last long and that I would always bounce back; and who promised me she would make me finish and stuck by her guns. Her support and encouragement never wavered and I am deeply grateful. I thank my mother for her constant support and my siblings for theirs, and Sybil, Marvin, Becky, and Reed.

    Fall • 2016 THE NEW ENGLAND SENIOR TENNIS FOUNDATION BULLETIN 2016 USTA New England Hall of Famers Jill Craybas Jill Craybas grew up just 20 miles away from Newport and now she’s back as a six-time WTA champion and member of the USTA New England Hall of Fame. As a junior, Jill attained a No. 1 New England ranking in the Girls 18s division and climbed to a high of 4 nationally. She continued to shine in college, winning national championships with both the University of Florida and the University of Texas, twice earning All-America honors. Craybas turned pro in 1996 and was a mainstay on the WTA tour. She competed in 45 straight Grand Slams and maintained a top- 100 ranking for 10 consecutive seasons. Her highest singles ranking was No. 39 and doubles, No. 41. Craybas also had the unique opportunity to represent her country as she was selected to the 2008 U.S. Olympic team and was a member of the Fed Cup team for five years. Wade Frame A competitive tournament player for the past 26 years, Wade Frame has achieved No. 1 New England rankings 19 times between singles and doubles. In 2014, he climbed as high as No. 19 nationally in 55 Singles and No. 5 in 55 Doubles with partner Chris Holmes. Despite his success though, he has never let tennis get in the way of family time. He’s always maintained a steady balance, and contributing to that is his competitive play with both his son Warren and daughter Alissa.
