SCHEDULE OF ASI SEE IT.... SERVICES Friday, December 4 What ever happened to the delightfully lightweight holiday called Hanukah, 7:30 pm whose essential character was playful like a spinning dreidel? Even the Family Shabbat Service rabbis in the Talmud who defined many of our holidays did not know what to do with Hanukah. They kept asking, "What is Hanukah?" Saturday, December 5 11:00 am For our forebears from Eastern and Central Europe, the nightly lighting of Bnai Mitzvah Service Andrew Elligers the menorah, accompanied by the singing of Rock of Ages and giving Julie Ivins "Hanukah gelt" (small change) to the children constituted the essence of our celebration. Special foods like pan fried potato !atkes (pancakes) were Friday, December 11 universal. Of course today in Israel, because of the Sephardic influence, 8:15 pm they enjoy doughnuts fried in oil. Above all, Hanukah brought light-hearted Shabbat Evening Service fun to young and old in the midst of the dreary winter season. 8:15 pm Teen Congregation However, Hanukah could be taken as a very serious holiday which Saturday, December 12 celebrates a remarkable victory of a small band of patriots facing 11:00 am overwhelming odds. Out of this victory came the renewal of our people and Bar Mitzvah Service its religious freedom, freedom to be ourselves. David Ellis

Friday, December 18 Now, is there a more important idea to celebrate in our time when, even 6:30 pm today in the closing decade of the 20th century, so few of our fellow human Tot Shabbat beings enjoy personal freedom, freedom of conscience? 8:15 pm Hanukah Festival Service It is only sheer coincidence that our Christian neighbors celebrate their Saturday, December 19 major religious holiday at the same time. We should be very careful not to 11:00 am confuse them by appropriating aspects of their holiday and thereby Bnai Mitzvah Service confusing our children as well. So let us enjoy our holiday and let us wish Cory Aserkoff our neighbors a happy time as well. Sarah Pollard

The Youth Committee has been involved in organizing this years agenda. Currently new members are being sought. If you are interested in specialized areas such as our college youth or our teens, for example, we are forming subcommittees to focus on specific programs.

Rabby Schwartzman directs our senior youth group Lil Rody. So far this year the group has attended a comedy club, gone bowling and will participate in a group social action project in December.

Our two younger groups, Rody Katan (grades 5 and 6) and Junior Rody (grades 7 and 8), operate under the direction of Beulah Levy. These groups have already had numerous programs. The younger children have been to the circus and the 7th and 8th graders have visited Jewish Baltimore and the Inner Harbor.

The committee is seeking new ideas and programs to implement for both our youth and their parents. Possible upcoming programs include a communications workshop, a dance program for pre-Bar/Bat Mitzvah youth and fundraising for scholarship opportunities. Our next meeting is Monday, December 7 at 7:30 pm in the library. Please join our meeting or give us a call to share ideas in youth committee programming for our whole congregation. Ed Beckwith (522-4747) and Joan Levin (533-1368)

INCLUDE OHEL YAACOV ON YOUR HANUKAH GIFT LIST

Ohel Yaacov, or Tent of Jacob, is a special fund set up at Temple Rodef Shalom to provide financial support to projects which address the problems of low-income housing in our metro area.

Funds raised by the temple have paid enormous dividends already to needy recipients. For example: Our donation to Homestretch, a Falls Church based group, enabled Homestretch to provide transitional housing and social services support to over fifty families last year. Homestretch helps families move out of shelters and gets them back on their feet with job training and practical life skills, as well as financial assistance. Ohel Yaacovs contribution to Yachad has med it possible for Yachad to participate in renovating over thirty boarded up dwelling units in Anacostia and Shaw. What once were abandoned apartment units used as crack houses are now safe, decent housing for community-spirited families who are trying to make a difference in their neighborhoods. The temples aid to three homeless shelters -- in Baileys Crossroads, Falls Church, and Reston -- has enabled these shelters to acquire basic supplies such as food and bedding, as well as to cover the salaries of professional social workers who counsel and support the homeless and try to move them on to more stable lives.

Our major fund drive is at Hanukah time, when we encourage donors to make their contributions in the name of a friend or family member. We will issue a certificate for you to present to your special honoree prior to Hanukah. Please contribute what you can.
