Monogrammed lower right: M.L. Hand-written inscription of the artist on the reverse: "Studie ist eine / eigenhändige ältere Arbeit / von mir. / Wannsee-Berlin 13/8.24 / Dr. h.c. Liebermann". 32 x 21 cm. The authenticity of this work has been confirmed by Prof. Eberle, Berlin, 5 May 2016. Provenance: Private collection, Switzerland. Literature: Cf. Eberle, Werkverzeichnis der Gemälde und Ölstudien 1865-1899, p. 472, no. 1897/16. The present work is a study for the painting from 1898, "Schulgang in Laren", which Liebermann created in two versions, one slightly smaller and one slightly larger (presently hanging in the Hermitage in St. Petersburg). The girl portrayed here belongs to a group of determined school children on their way to class. She is wea- ring the mandatory school uniform, and intent in her purpose, her back is turned to the viewer. Liebermann created various figure studies for the paintings, including the study offe- red here. The girl portrayed in the present work is already included in the first colou- red compositional sketch. She is one of the first figures that Liebermann planned for his image. There is a second, similar study which also shows the neighbour next to our girl. The two studies are both very similar and were probably created right before the final painting. In contrast to others, the present study has been well developed, recognisable in the fact that the figure is already enveloped in the 3201 patchwork of light. This same patchwork, as well as the palette of green-brown colours employed by Liebermann, are characteristic of the artist and are found repeatedly in his oeuvre. WIND AND CALM Mané-Katz Stormy Seas Arthur Segal Halen: Ciotat (Harbour Scene) Oil on canvas 1934 Oil on canvas 1929 CONTENT AND IDEAS What can you see in these two pictures? • Mané-Katz’s painting shows a single small sailing boat with two sailors on foaming waves. • Segal’s painting shows several sailing boats moored in the harbour of a village or small town with people walking along the quayside and two people aboard the boats. Activity Ask children to take turns to say one thing they can spot in either picture to build up a vocabulary of its contents. What is the weather like in each picture? How have the artists depicted this? • The weather in Mané-Katz’s picture is extremely windy. • To suggest the force of the wind, the artist has painted the hull and the sails of the boat tilting at a sharp angle, with the front sail billowing, or perhaps flapping. • The frothy white waves and the grey and white sky behind the boat suggest stormy weather. • The weather in Segal’s picture is sunny and still. • The sky is blue. • The buildings are bathed in yellow sunlight. • The reflections are clear. Activities • Ask children to share ideas about how the sailors might be feeling in Mané-Katz’s painting. Are they lost at sea? Were they prepared for the storm or has it arrived suddenly? What has happened to their boat? What might happen next? What might the sailors be saying to one another? • Ask children to imagine that Segal’s scene is a holiday postcard they are going to send to a friend.

  • Jews in Dada: Marcel Janco, Tristan Tzara, and Hans Richter
1 Jews in Dada: Marcel Janco, Tristan Tzara, and Hans Richter This lecture deals with three Jews who got together in Zurich in 1916. Two of them, Janco and Tzara, were high school friends in Romania; the third, Hans Richter, was German, and, probably unbeknown to them, also a Jew. I start with Janco and I wish to open on a personal note. The 'case' of Marcel Janco would best be epitomized by the somewhat fragmented and limited perspective from which, for a while, I was obliged to view his art. This experience has been shared, fully or in part, by my generation as well as by those closer to Janco's generation, Romanians, Europeans and Americans alike. Growing up in Israel in the 1950s and 60s, I knew Janco for what he was then – an Israeli artist. The founder of the artists' colony of Ein Hod, the teacher of an entire generation of young Israeli painters, he was so deeply rooted in the Israeli experience, so much part of our landscape, that it was inconceivable to see him as anything else but that. When I first started to read the literature of Dada and Surrealism, I was surprised to find a Marcel Janco portrayed as one of the originators of Dada. Was it the same Marcel Janco? Somehow I couldn't associate an art scene so removed from the mainstream of modern art – as I then unflatteringly perceived 2 the Israeli art scene – with the formidable Dada credentials ascribed to Janco. Later, in New York – this was in the early 1970s – I discovered that many of those well-versed in the history of Dada were aware of Marcel Janco the Dadaist but were rather ignorant about his later career.

  • In Turn-Of-The-Century Paris, an Explosion of Brash New Art
1 In Turn-of-the-Century Paris, An Explosion of Brash New Art Dubbed 'les Fauves' (the wild beasts) for their uninhibited use of color, these artists boldly rearranged the imagery of nature By Helen Dudar, Smithsonian, October, 1990 The scandal of the Parisian art world in 1905 was Room VII of the third annual Salon d'Automne in the Grand Palais, its walls throbbing with raw color. Color squeezed straight out of tubes; color assaulting the eye and senses; color that sometimes seemed to have been flung upon the canvas; color that dared to tint human flesh pea green and tree trunks a violent Andre Derain, The Turning Road, L’Estaque, 1906 red; color that not only refused to imitate nature but actually had been used to suggest form and depth. The signatures on the paintings bore the names of men some of whom, surviving notoriety, would soon be more or less famous. Henri Matisse, the oldest of them and the unlikely center of this radical new style, would flourish into his 85th year as one of the masters of our century. Andre Derain would, for a time, produce works of breathtaking originality and virtuosity. Albert Marquet and Henri Manguin, less than household names in our day, would be the best-sellers of the group because they turned out tamer work that was gentler to the untutored eye. Maurice de Vlaminck, a larger-than-life figure and a devout fabulist, would claim with some exaggeration that he was really the first to engage with the new style, and then, the first to abandon it.
