WIND AND CALM Mané-Katz Stormy Seas Arthur Segal Halen: Ciotat (Harbour Scene) Oil on canvas 1934 Oil on canvas 1929 CONTENT AND IDEAS What can you see in these two pictures? • Mané-Katz’s painting shows a single small sailing boat with two sailors on foaming waves. • Segal’s painting shows several sailing boats moored in the harbour of a village or small town with people walking along the quayside and two people aboard the boats. Activity Ask children to take turns to say one thing they can spot in either picture to build up a vocabulary of its contents. What is the weather like in each picture? How have the artists depicted this? • The weather in Mané-Katz’s picture is extremely windy. • To suggest the force of the wind, the artist has painted the hull and the sails of the boat tilting at a sharp angle, with the front sail billowing, or perhaps flapping. • The frothy white waves and the grey and white sky behind the boat suggest stormy weather. • The weather in Segal’s picture is sunny and still. • The sky is blue. • The buildings are bathed in yellow sunlight. • The reflections are clear. Activities • Ask children to share ideas about how the sailors might be feeling in Mané-Katz’s painting. Are they lost at sea? Were they prepared for the storm or has it arrived suddenly? What has happened to their boat? What might happen next? What might the sailors be saying to one another? • Ask children to imagine that Segal’s scene is a holiday postcard they are going to send to a friend.

  • Jews in Dada: Marcel Janco, Tristan Tzara, and Hans Richter
1 Jews in Dada: Marcel Janco, Tristan Tzara, and Hans Richter This lecture deals with three Jews who got together in Zurich in 1916. Two of them, Janco and Tzara, were high school friends in Romania; the third, Hans Richter, was German, and, probably unbeknown to them, also a Jew. I start with Janco and I wish to open on a personal note. The 'case' of Marcel Janco would best be epitomized by the somewhat fragmented and limited perspective from which, for a while, I was obliged to view his art. This experience has been shared, fully or in part, by my generation as well as by those closer to Janco's generation, Romanians, Europeans and Americans alike. Growing up in Israel in the 1950s and 60s, I knew Janco for what he was then – an Israeli artist. The founder of the artists' colony of Ein Hod, the teacher of an entire generation of young Israeli painters, he was so deeply rooted in the Israeli experience, so much part of our landscape, that it was inconceivable to see him as anything else but that. When I first started to read the literature of Dada and Surrealism, I was surprised to find a Marcel Janco portrayed as one of the originators of Dada. Was it the same Marcel Janco? Somehow I couldn't associate an art scene so removed from the mainstream of modern art – as I then unflatteringly perceived 2 the Israeli art scene – with the formidable Dada credentials ascribed to Janco. Later, in New York – this was in the early 1970s – I discovered that many of those well-versed in the history of Dada were aware of Marcel Janco the Dadaist but were rather ignorant about his later career.

  • Narratives Crossing Borders: the Dynamics of Cultural Interaction
Between Zurich and Romania: A Dada Exchange Amelia Miholca Arizona State University Jewish-Romanian Identity Why has the Jewish-Romanian identity of the Dadaists Tristan Tzara, Marcel Janco, and Arthur Segal been overlooked or crit- ically unexamined in art historical discourse? Until recently, this significant and complicated identity warranted a brief mention in biographical and Dada studies, such as in those of Robert Motherwell (1951), George Hugnet (1971) Harry Seiwert (1996) and François Buot (2002), which gave prominence to the three Dadaists’ ties to Switzerland, France, Germany. Romania, their country of birth, was mentioned briefly to indicate the interna- tional character of the Dada movement in Zurich, for besides the Romanians, the Dada group comprised of artists from Germany, Russia, Sweden, and France, among them, the main contributors Hugo Ball, Emmy Hennings, Richard Huelsenbeck, Hans Richter, Hans Arp, and Sophie Taeuber-Arp. Their country of origin was also used in the description of Zurich and its international, intel- lectual scene during the war. Their Jewish upbringing and reli- gious and cultural affiliation are even less acknowledged. Tom Sandqvist’s book Dada East from 2006 is the most comprehensive study of the Jewish-Romanian aspect of Dada. Sandqvist traces the Jewish and Romanian sources that he claims influenced Dada performances. My analysis builds on Sandqvist’s claims, but rather than presenting a coherent line of influence be- tween the artistic practices of Tzara, Janco, and Segal, and their shared Romania and Jewish background, as Sandqvist attempts How to cite this book chapter: Miholca, A. 2021. • Gidni 2 Literature 517 the Romanian Avant-Garde
GIDNI 2 LITERATURE THE ROMANIAN AVANT-GARDE - PART OF THE FIRST GLOBALIZATION'S PHENOMENA Călin Stegerean, PhD, Researcher, ”Babeș-Bolyai” University of Cluj-Napoca Abstract: The Romanian avant-garde manifested through the interference and the osmosis of new aesthetic directions which Romanian visual arts and literature had experienced since the beginning of the 1920řs, aligning itself with a phenomenon that could already have been considered global at that time. In Romania the avant-garde was perceived by almost all its experts as a phenomenon whose appearance and existence were determined by the inter-war Romanian avant-garde magazines as Contimporanul, 75 H.P., Punct, Integral, unu, Alge. The avant-garde magazine Contimporanul organized the first new art exhibitions in Romania with international participation, they contributed to the crystallization of the avant-garde in visual arts as well as the consolidation of the avant-garde movement in literature. The Romanian avant-garde was one of the chapters with the greatest international echo in the history of Romanian culture, one of the rare moments of synchronicity with the European art and culture. Keywords: avant-garde, avant-garde magazines, art exhibitions, synchronicity In Romania, the Avant-garde manifested itself via the interference and osmosis of new aesthetic directions that the autochthonous arts and literature had been in contact with since the early 1920s, thanks to their alignment with a phenomenon that could be considered global, even at that time. Indeed, starting in Europe in the first decade of the 20th century new artistic directions put in question the shapes, the content and the significance of the artworks and even the established social's organization and values.

  • How to Be Transnational? Identity Trajectories of the Romanian Avant-Garde Magazines
SECTION: LITERATURE LDMD I HOW TO BE TRANSNATIONAL? IDENTITY TRAJECTORIES OF THE ROMANIAN AVANT-GARDE MAGAZINES Adriana COPACIU, PhD Candidate, Université de Fribourg, Suisse Abstract: Rather than focusing on a pristine reading of the avant-garde, all along our argumentation we prefer a cohesive view of an intricate cultural phenomenon that is the tension, discord and reciprocal contaminations of modernism, avant-garde and traditionalism in Romania, during the early 20th century. Firstly, our advocacy is that the ambiguous relationship between the traditionalist block and the promoters of a national ‘specific’ style indicates the bifrons image of Romanian modernism and should be regarded as a platform for the emergence of the avant-garde and not exclusively as an opponent of all new art. Secondly, we would like to suggest that the case of the Romanian avant-garde stands as both a vector of the Central and Eastern European avant-gardes and also as an outcome of the cultural hegemony tactics brought into play at the time. Attempting no hierarchical bias between traditionalism and avant-garde, we are interested in their reciprocal motivations (historical and ideological) and in the way in which their tribunes, the magazines, help us reconfigure a systematic profile of the modern Romanian cultural space. Keywords: European avant-garde, magazines, traditionalism, periphery, literary field Introduction: Avant-garde and traditionalism as facets of the Romanian modernity Precipitously dismissed as retrograde, experimentalist or listed among the native background of some of the most famous key characters of the European artistic scene, the Romanian avant-garde prolifically mimes the illusion of the Centre and incessantly negotiates its status of a peripheral culture.

  • MARCEL JANCO One of the Founders of the Dada Movement and The
MARCEL JANCO One of the founders of the Dada movement and the Romanian avant-guard By Stephan Benedict The speech was held at the opening of the exhibit Avant-garde artist Marcel Iancu at RCINY, the Romanian Cultural Institute in New York http://icrny.org/566-Avant-garde_artist_Marcel_Iancu_at_RCINY.html In this presentation, I will underline the contribution of the Romanian born painter and architect, to the European and Romanian avant-guard movements, as well as his artistic activity before leaving Romania forever in 1941, just before Romania’s entry in WWII. My essay is based on materials already published on the subject, especially the book of the Romanian art critic Geo Serban, “Intalniri cu Marcel Iancu” published in 2011. “I wouldn’t have ever left – he confessed – if the green terror (meaning The Iron Guard) wouldn’t have made victim even in my own family. However my roots are still there and I still feel how the pulse of my roots is still beating”. Dada was a unique artistic movement, THE MOST RADICAL ARTISTIC INSURECTION OF THE 20TH CENTURY, which had a major impact on that century’s art. It was established in Cabaret Voltaire, in Zurich, Switzerland, by a group of exiled poets, painters and philosophers who were opposed to war and aggression, thus changing the world culture. Among the founders were Marcel Janco, Tristan Tzara, Hugo Ball, Emmy Hennings, Hans Arp, Richard Huelsenbeck, Hans Richter. Dada soirées featured spontaneous poetry, avant-garde music, and mask wearing dancers in elaborate shows. The Dadaists teased and enraged the audience through their bold defiance of Western culture and art, which they considered obsolete in view of the destruction and carnage of World War I.
