Moon spent a lot of his time in New York, usually staying at the Hotel Navarro. I love to see people laugh and I love it more if I can make them laugh. From over first- hand interviews he traces with deadly accuracy Moon's remarkable journey from his working-class Northwest London childhood through the Who's glory years to the California high-life and a sad premature death. Heminevrin should not have been given to him, it should have only been administered in a hospital but he was a rock star and so the doctor looked the other way. And yet Keith Moon did eventually succumb to his devices, as many rock stars have. The same illness that caused him to treat the women he loved quite horribly. You rarely see it but when you do, you see this incredible depth. Moon himself. This was due to his own lifestyle taking its toll. He did a wonderful John [Entwistle]. It is a complete psychoanalysis on the legendary Keith Moon, drummer for The Who. They're always saying I'm a capitalistic pig. That he also regularly practised not just two, but all six examples of impulsiveness, ought to seal it. One of the most enjoyable parts of reading the book was when the author was describing the making of the different albums in the progression of the group's history and then going back to my mp3 player and listening to the songs he was talking about. In the days before his death, Moon had apparently been seriously cutting back on his intake. Tragic that so much of his life wasted away in addiction and materialism. He also examines why these fictitious events are still routinely quoted as factual - essentially, that everyone wanted to believe in Moon the Loon as much as Keith Moon himself did. Was nicknamed "Nobby" by his father, Arthur. Signing up for the RBP newsletter provides access to a limited number of free articles, as well as six new free articles every week. After being fired from the band and then re-instated, Daltrey managed to tone down this behavior. The band stopped playing while their roadies carried their drummer off stage to give him a shower and a cortisone injection. Dear Boy: The Life of Keith Moon Reviews Packed flash powder in his bass drum during an appearance on the The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour , causing it to explode. Dec 30, Paul rated it really liked it. But ardent Who fans will find it fascinating. It's also the tale of the forces, movements, and trends that came together to create the atmosphere that gave birth to The Who. The author doesn't overindulge the rock star pathology thread of Moon's life but doesn't focus exclusively on the music either. Unknown to many people at the time, Moon was often able to cajole into helping him blow up toilets. After being fired from the band and then re-instated, Daltrey managed to tone down this behavior. One of the fundamental reasons is because this was the last time Moon would be heard on a Who record. He loved to waltz around London, too. They portray a man so beset with insecurities and addictions that he simply does not know who he is anymore. Keith Moon was one of the shock troops of that revolution: the world's greatest rock drummer, a phenomenal character and an extravagant hell-raiser who — in a final, uncharacteristic act of grace — actually did die before he got old. Kerrigan left Moon in and moved in with player. Most over-used trailer song? Everybody had given up on him. Was a huge fan of The Beach Boys and reportedly used to listen to their album "Shut Down Volume 2" constantly for inspiration, before joining The Who. Comedian will play the main role and may have to do drumming lessons to suit the character. These were the first words put to me by one of the vast number of people I talked to while researching the life of Keith Moon. All good art cannot help but confront denial on its way to the truth. Bette Davis was standing backstage during the explosion and fainted. It is likely that the drummer was suffering from the bi polar disorder as he was prone to sudden mood changes. I felt there were some minor stories and avenues that could have been edited down or omitted for the sake of flow and just getting on with it. The recording featured the work of 40 drummers, including Ringo Starr and his son Zak Starkey. The only negative is that the book, IMO, is bit too long for its own good. Vond je dit een nuttige review? It was almost like he was schizophrenic in a lot of ways. His antics were considered so outrageous that he made Keith Richards , Jim Morrison and Ozzy Osbourne all seem like mischievous altar boys. MUSIC 262: Art/Prog Rock [Brian Ward demonstrates a tune on piano] [Brian Ward]: So around this time in rock and roll we really start to see a lot of fragmentation going on, and that’s reflected in this course. The way we have this designed is so that we can go in different directions with the music, and that’s what the music did all sort of at the same time. One of the directions is what we now call art rock and also progressive rock. Now art rock and progressive rock are terms that are used loosely. A good way to describe it is art rock is rock and roll that is influenced by classical music while progressive rock is more influenced by jazz, so- but you have different elements in varying degrees of influence and in different ways. A good illustration of that is one of the first bands that I want to talk about is The Who. Now The Who were definitely a straight down the line rock and roll band, and they started like a lot of these other British bands: imitating the blues and rhythm and blues music from the United States, but The Who were very unique. They had probably the most four individualized members of any band of all time. All four members of the band, Pete Townshend, Roger Daltrey, John Entwistle, and Keith Moon, were all very, very different people coming from different backgrounds, and that reflected in their music, and they used that to their advantage quite a bit. But with The Who I think rock star first becoming an art form in the sense that they had longer forms and they used many structures that eventually became mini-operas and they eventually made a rock opera called “Tommy.” Now when they started out they were more on the cutting edge of hard rock.

  • "The Who Sings My Generation" (Album)
“The Who Sings My Generation”—The Who (1966) Added to the National Registry: 2008 Essay by Cary O’Dell Original album Original label The Who Founded in England in 1964, Roger Daltrey, Pete Townshend, John Entwistle, and Keith Moon are, collectively, better known as The Who. As a group on the pop-rock landscape, it’s been said that The Who occupy a rebel ground somewhere between the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, while, at the same time, proving to be innovative, iconoclastic and progressive all on their own. We can thank them for various now- standard rock affectations: the heightened level of decadence in rock (smashed guitars and exploding drum kits, among other now almost clichéd antics); making greater use of synthesizers in popular music; taking American R&B into a decidedly punk direction; and even formulating the idea of the once oxymoronic sounding “rock opera.” Almost all these elements are evident on The Who’s debut album, 1966’s “The Who Sings My Generation.” Though the band—back when they were known as The High Numbers—had a minor English hit in 1964 with the singles “I’m the Face”/”Zoot Suit,” it wouldn’t be until ’66 and the release of “My Generation” that the world got a true what’s what from The Who. “Generation,” steam- powered by its title tune and timeless lyric of “I hope I die before I get old,” “Generation” is a song cycle worthy of its inclusive name. Twelve tracks make up the album: “I Don’t Mind,” “The Good’s Gone,” “La-La-La Lies,” “Much Too Much,” “My Generation,” “The Kids Are Alright,” “Please, Please, Please,” “It’s Not True,” “The Ox,” “A Legal Matter” and “Instant Party.” Allmusic.com summarizes the album appropriately: An explosive debut, and the hardest mod pop recorded by anyone.

  • "Thunderfingers - a Tribute to John Entwistle" (MVD Visual) by Jonathan Mariante
"Thunderfingers - A Tribute To John Entwistle" (MVD Visual) by Jonathan Mariante The late, great John Entwistle is profiled in this DVD. It includes the last interview he gave before his untimely death (the interview conducted by Gordon Giltrap), and commentary from other famous musicians, and John's family and friends. They discuss John's impact on their lives and on the world of rock music. John of course was an extremely talented, innovative, and influential bass guitarist, who created a unique style of his own, and helped define the way rock bass is played. He has influenced generations of musicians, and will no doubt continue to do so for a long time to come. In the final interview, John discusses and demonstrates his bass guitar techniques and abilities. As he, and others, point out, he played bass as if it were lead guitar. He shows the difference between a bass player and a bass guitarist. His background and history are also discussed. Right from the very start, John was a very musically inclined and gifted individual. He started playing music at a very young age, and always excelled at it. Dave Lambert of the Strawbs (one of the interviewees) went to summer camp as a boy with John, heard him playing a simple wake up call tune on a bugle, and thought it sounded beautiful. That was certainly a sign of things to come! Later, in college, John met the other Who members, they formed a band, and the rest is history! As a bonus item, John is interviewed at his home, showing off and discussing his prized guitar collection.
