And a special thanks to the hosts, judges, and contestants of Arab Idol for producing such interesting linguistic data used in this analysis. v AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OF Genevieve Marie Heckel for Master of Art Major: Middle Eastern Studies Title: Interdialectal Communication and Code Switching in pan-Arab Reality Television: The Case of Arab Idol This analysis explored interdialectal communication on the program Arab Idol, which created an exemplary opportunity for this field of study by bringing together hosts, judges, contestants, and a viewing audience spanning the entire Arabic-speaking world. In the course of the literature review, two main gaps became apparent. First, few studies have examined spontaneous alterations between Standard Arabic and Dialectal Arabic by individuals who are not trained specifically to use Standard Arabic. Second, there is an urgent need for interdialectal analyses in Arabic linguistics literature. The theoretical framework for this analysis was Giles’ Accommodation Theory, which states that speakers will converge or diverge their speech patterns to narrow or widen the social distance between the interlocutors. Two research questions guided this examination of interdialectal communication: first, what are the normal speech patterns of the judges and the hosts, and second, when do speakers either converge to or diverge from their interlocutors? To answer the former, I randomly selected longer stretches of speech from the portion of the episodes during which the hosts asked the judges questions. For the latter, I transcribed and analyzed the feedback segment for a selected group of finalists from both seasons. The transcribed data consisted of 123 comment sections, amounting to more than 9.5 hours of recordings.     Faten Hamama and the 'Egyptian difference' in film madamasr.com January 20 In 1963, Faten Hamama made her one and only Hollywood film. Entitled Cairo, the movie was a remake of The Asphalt Jungle, but refashioned in an Egyptian setting. In retrospect, there is little remarkable about the film but for Hamama’s appearance alongside stars such as George Sanders and Richard Johnson. Indeed, copies are extremely difficult to track down: Among the only ways to watch the movie is to catch one of the rare screenings scheduled by cable and satellite network Turner Classic Movies. However, Hamama’s foray into Hollywood is interesting by comparison with the films she was making in “the Hollywood on the Nile” at the time. The next year, one of the great classics of Hamama’s career, Al-Bab al-Maftuh (The Open Door), Henri Barakat’s adaptation of Latifa al-Zayyat’s novel, hit Egyptian screens. In stark contrast to Cairo, in which she played a relatively minor role, Hamama occupied the top of the bill for The Open Door, as was the case with practically all the films she was making by that time. One could hardly expect an Egyptian actress of the 1960s to catapult to Hollywood stardom in her first appearance before an English-speaking audience, although her husband Omar Sharif’s example no doubt weighed upon her. Rather, what I find interesting in setting 1963’s Cairo alongside 1964’s The Open Door is the way in which the Hollywood film marginalizes the principal woman among the film’s characters, while the Egyptian film sets that character well above all male counterparts.

    Song, State, Sawa Music and Political Radio between the US and Syria Beau Bothwell Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2013 © 2013 Beau Bothwell All rights reserved ABSTRACT Song, State, Sawa: Music and Political Radio between the US and Syria Beau Bothwell This dissertation is a study of popular music and state-controlled radio broadcasting in the Arabic-speaking world, focusing on Syria and the Syrian radioscape, and a set of American stations named Radio Sawa. I examine American and Syrian politically directed broadcasts as multi-faceted objects around which broadcasters and listeners often differ not only in goals, operating assumptions, and political beliefs, but also in how they fundamentally conceptualize the practice of listening to the radio. Beginning with the history of international broadcasting in the Middle East, I analyze the institutional theories under which music is employed as a tool of American and Syrian policy, the imagined youths to whom the musical messages are addressed, and the actual sonic content tasked with political persuasion. At the reception side of the broadcaster-listener interaction, this dissertation addresses the auditory practices, histories of radio, and theories of music through which listeners in the sonic environment of Damascus, Syria create locally relevant meaning out of music and radio. Drawing on theories of listening and communication developed in historical musicology and ethnomusicology, science and technology studies, and recent transnational ethnographic and media studies, as well as on theories of listening developed in the Arabic public discourse about popular music, my dissertation outlines the intersection of the hypothetical listeners defined by the US and Syrian governments in their efforts to use music for political ends, and the actual people who turn on the radio to hear the music.

Barriers to development imposed by the continuing occupation and the separation wall. The consequences of the Palestinian condition as a stateless nation, and nonexistence were evidenced in the lack of communication among people, the distance from places of leisure, culture and social disintegration with all the limitations of life that are accompanied with it. The Palestinians had to invent and create an immediate solution to come alive and adapt to the current situation or else run the risk of engendering a well known form of social pathology. In a country were institutional forms of government are lacking; ‘popular culture has developed on social media platforms free from the governmental authority and power. Facebook provides a free space for self-expression, creativity, civic initiative, anti-politics and the freedom of communication with international society.’ Recent statistics indicate that Palestinian youth are one of the largest users of social media in the Arab World, mainly Facebook (PCBS, 2015). The onset of the use of social media heralded an interest, by scholars in re-defining the lynchpins of democracy in Palestine and the importance of social media in that equation. The effect of new media on emotional life, empathy, political participation, and social mobilisation had a major impact on these deliberations.

This whirlwind tour through the history of Arabic poetry will be restrained to the function of the poet and the role of poetry played in general in Arabic-Islamic history. Indeed the preoccupation with works of modern writers should not only be an issue for organizations working on the improvement of intercultural dialogue. It is also of great importance that the scholarly discourse in Islamic or Middle Eastern Studies recognizes the importance of modern Arabic literature. Arabic literature could be another valuable source of information, in addition to the Qur' ān and Sunnah. If you 1 consider the theory of theologian Hermann Gunkel about the “Sitz im Leben ” (seat in life) and if we question a lyrical or prose text about the formative stage, it is possible to learn much about the society from which an author is addressing his audience.
