Mirei Sako The play takes place in Philadelphia and New York City in the 1960's. There will be two ten-minute intermissions. Director's Notes: David Rabe, who stands foremost in the ranks of America's contemporary playwrights, is best known for his Vietnam plays: THE BASIC TRAINING OF PAVLO HUMMEL (which I directed at Kennedy Theatre in 1972), STICKS AND BONES, and STREAMERS. His mentor and New York producer has been Joseph Papp of the New York Shakespeare Festival, and for a time, Lincoln Center. In fact, IN THE BOOM BOOM ROOM was Papp's choice for his initial presentation in the Vivian Beaumont Theatre at Lincoln Center on November 8, 1973. It was re-written by Rabe and once again presented by Papp on December 4, 1974at the New York Shakespeare Festival Public Theatre. It is this second version that you are seeing. The reception each time to Rabe's play was controversial, to say the least. It was both praised and maligned, but at the end of the '73-'74 theatre season it came within a fraction of a vote of winning the New York Drama Critics' Circle Best Play Award. Inevitably, the question will arise from some, why did I wish to direct this play? First, while it is certainly flawed, it is the product of perhaps this country's finest young playwright, and Kennedy Theatre audiences should have the opportunity to witness the works of writers who are alive and very definitely kicking as well as those who have been long laid to rest. Secondly, it is a vital and dynamic play, presented in a form that challenges and excites a director. Thirdly, it is a sensitive and curiously uplifting piece, notwithstanding its ending. For Chrissy, the central character, is a ramshackle, valiant little creature, despite the gulf that yawns between her aspirations and her life. She's a victim of everyone; she is ignorant, obtuse, bewildered, tough and touching- but glowing in her never-ceasing attack on life. She is a true hero ine, indomitable in her pursuit of who she was, and is, and can be . No matter the hells she has gone through and has yet to face, she will survive.
