This week we welcomed new members to our Parent Involvement Committee (PIC). It was a great opportunity to meet with parents and to share ideas and strategies about parent involvement in education. There are so many ways for parents to get involved - whether it's supporting your child's learning at home, volunteering at school, helping out on a field trip, sitting on school council, or coaching a sports team or leading club; there is something for everyone. Every one of these activities makes a difference in our schools and in helping your child to understand that school is important and valued in your home. The Parent Involvement Committee will be updating our publication "It's Your Child's Education - Be a Part of it!" We always welcome your ideas and if you have any thoughts or suggestions on this publication or other resources that you think would be helpful, please send me a message at [email protected].

Director's Update This week, the Director attend the PIC meeting and had the opportunity to participate in a great discussion about math. This was timely because the Director has just recently posted a new web update with a focus on mathematics. One of the resources that was shared at the meeting and is included in the web update is the Framework for Balanced Mathematics Instruction, K-12. This framework was designed for educators, but many parents have expressed interest in it as a way to better understand how math is taught at school. The framework emphasizes the importance of both operation skills (e.g., the much talked about multiplication tables) and problem-solving skills (i.e., the ability to know how and when to apply operational skills and mathematical concepts to solve complex problems). This approach is congruent with the current mathematics curriculum and is what is being instructed in our classrooms. This month we distributed our new Numeracy Guide for Parents/Guardians to all schools. Take a few minutes to read this publication.

REMINDERS High School Exams Students in secondary school, grades 9-12, will have exams beginning Monday, January 27 through to Friday January 31, 2014. Check your school website for a copy of the exam schedule. It is very important that all students be in attendance for all exams. Please do not schedule appointments or trips for your child on exam days. In the event of inclement weather resulting in the cancellation of school buses, all examinations will be postponed to the next school day in all secondary schools. This would result in a shifting of each remaining day of the examination schedule, and a corresponding delayed start to Semester 2. In the event that an individual secondary school must be closed on a day during the examination schedule, examinations scheduled to be written at that school on that day, will be written on the next day that the school is open. Monday, February 3 is the scheduled first day of Semester 2.

Ottawa Public Health Extreme Cold Weather Tips To Keep You and Your Children Warm. Wear a hat, gloves or mittens to prevent heat loss and protect ears and fingers from frostbite. Wear a scarf to protect the chin, lips and cheeks - all are extremely susceptible to cold weather injuries. Wear clothes in layers. The inner layer (closest to the skin) - should have "wicking" properties to move any moisture away from the skin. The middle layer should be the insulating layer to prevent loss of your body heat while keeping the cold outside air away. Finally the outer layer should be the "windbreaking" layer to reduce the chances of cold air reaching the insulating layer.

When Ottawa Public Health issues a cold weather alert to the OCDSB, this information is forwarded to schools. On days where schools receive the Ottawa Public Health Frostbite Alert/Advisory (Wind chill of - 25 or colder) or Frostbite Warning (Wind chill of -35 or colder), principals are encouraged to keep students indoors for recess, lunch or class-based activities.
