En este trabajo se documentan nuevas localidades para tres especies de mamíferos pequeños escasamente conocidos en Ecuador, en base a colectas de campo y revisión de colecciones mastozoológicas. Reportamos la ampliación del rango de distribución de Tanyuromys aphrastus, Thomasomys fumeus y T. hudsoni. En Ecuador es necesario incrementar muestreos en las laderas de los Andes, con la finalidad de obtener una mejor documentación de la riqueza y distribución de los mamíferos pequeños. ABSTRACT. New localities for three poorly known species of small mammals (Rodentia: Cricetidae). On the basis of field efforts and a review of mammal collections, we report new localities in Ecuador for three rare small mammal species. We report extensions of the ranges of distribution for Tanyuromys aphrastus, Thomasomys fumeus and Thomasomys hudsoni. The Ecuatorian Andean region requires additional sampling efforts, in order to better document the richness and distribution of small mammals. Palabras clave: Tanyuromys aphrastus. -

SUMMARY Dominant woody vegetation in arid ecosystems supports different species of plants and animals largely dependent on the existence of these habitats for their survival. The chica (Ramorinoa girolae) is a woody leguminous tree endemic to central-western Argentina and categorized as vulnerable. We evaluated 1) richness of plants, birds and mammals associated with the habitat under its canopy, 2) whether richness is related to the morphological attributes and to the features of the habitat under its canopy, and 3) behavior displayed by birds and mammals. We recorded presence/absence of plants under the canopy of 19 trees in Ischigualasto Provincial Park. Moreover, we recorded abundance of birds and mammals and signs of mammal activity using camera traps. -

Dicho relieve es producto de la evolución geológica del Complejo Volcánico Taapaca (CVT), cuyos procesos eruptivos han dado paso a morfolito- logías constructivas que configuran la subcuenca estudiada, en las que el factor climático ha actuado constantemente, meteorizando y erosionando los materiales, dando como resultado formas derivadas de procesos gravitacionales, fluviales y, en menor medida, periglaciales. -

INFORME DE AVANCE IABIN ECOSYSTEM GRANT: DIGITALIZACIÓN DE DATOS E INFORMACIÓN, DEPURACIÓN Y ESTANDARIZACIÓN DE PISOS DE VEGETACIÓN DE CHILE Patricio Pliscoff, Federico Luebert, Corporación Taller La Era, Santiago, Chile, 30 de Septiembre de 2008. Resumen Se ha ingresado el 50,6% de la información bibliográfica recopilada para el desarrollo de la base de información puntual georeferenciada de inventarios de vegetación. Se ha depurado el 68,5% del total de pisos de vegetación de la cartografía digital. Se ha comenzado el proceso de estandarización de la clasificación de pisos de vegetación con el estándar de metadatos del IABIN, encontrando algunas dificultades en el ingreso de información. Las equivalencias entre pisos de vegetación y sistemas ecológicos ya ha sido finalizada. Abstract The 50.6% of the compiled bibliographic references for the development of the georeferenced database of vegetation inventories have been included. The 68.5% of vegetation belts of the digital cartography have been debbuged and fixed. The standarization process of vegetation belts has been begun, entering data into the IABIN ecosystem standard, finding some difficulties in the information entrance. The equivalences between vegetation belts and ecological systems has already been finished. Objetivos del Proyecto 1) Generación de una base de información puntual georeferenciada de inventarios de vegetación. 2) Depuración de cartografía digital de pisos vegetacionales. 3) Estandarizar la clasificación de Pisos de vegetación con los estándares de metadatos de IABIN y con la clasificación de Sistemas Ecológicos de NatureServe. Productos y resultados esperados De acuerdo con los objetivos mencionados, se espera obtener los siguientes resultados: - Una base de datos georeferenciada de puntos con inventarios de vegetación chilena - Una cartografía depurada de pisos de vegetación de Chile (Luebert & Pliscoff 2006) - Un esquema de equivalencias entre la clasificación de pisos de vegetación de Chile (Luebert & Pliscoff 2006) y la clasificación de sistemas ecológicos de NatureServe (2003). -

Chapter 1: General introduction CHAPTER 1 General introduction 1. The African wild cat, Felis silvestris (Forster, 1780) and synonym Felis silvestris cafra (Desmarest, 1822): an overview The African wild cat (Felis silvestris) has a wide distributional range (Fig. 1.1). However there is a paucity of information on all aspects of its biology. Since the wild cat is the ancestor of the domestic cat and they can interbreed and produce fertile offspring, hybridisation with the domestic form may be the biggest threat to the survival of wild cats today (Nowell & Jackson, 1996). 1.1 Phylogenetic relations and taxonomic classification Felid classification has a long and complex history fluctuating between extremes of “splitting” and “lumping” of the species (see historical review by Werdelin in Nowell & Jackson, 1996). Even on the subspecies level there has been considerable debate between the traditional taxonomic approach and the more contemporary approach using knowledge from population biology and genetics (Nowell & Jackson, 1996). The recent revolution in sequencing of genomes and new technologies to probe DNA has lead to the development of valuable new tools and methods for investigating phylogenetic relationships. Consequently, the first clearly resolved Feliday family tree has only recently been constructed (Johnson, Eizirik, Pecon-Slattery, Murphy, Antunes, Teeling & O’Brien, 2006, O’Brien & Johnson, 2007). The 37 felid species were grouped into eight lineages by molecular analysis, consistent with observations that lineages shared morphological, biological, physiological characteristics found only in their group. The recent findings suggest that all modern cats are descended from one of several Pseudaelurus species that lived in Asia around 11 million years ago (O’Brien & Johnson, 2007).
