The University of San Francisco PEACE EDUCATION IN KENYA: TRACING DISCOURSE AND ACTION FROM THE NATIONAL TO THE LOCAL LEVEL A Dissertation Presented to The Faculty of the School of Education International and Multicultural Education Department In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Education by Kathleen Louise Zanoni San Francisco May 2018 THE UNIVERSITY OF SAN FRANCISCO PEACE EDUCATION IN KENYA: TRACING DISCOURSE AND ACTION FROM THE NATIONAL TO THE LOCAL LEVEL ABSTRACT Recent Presidential elections in Kenya (2017) resulted in a contested re-run election and demonstrated the presence of systemic corruption, a culture of impunity, and a continued rift among civil society. Deep wounds were awakened during this recent election triggering past grievances from the post-election violence in 2007-08. It is critical and timely to explore various cross-sectoral peacebuilding approaches at the national and local levels to increase the capacity of individuals to act as agents of peace. However, peacebuilders often overlook the possibilities that exist within formal education to foster spaces of resistance against direct, structural, and cultural forms of violence. This vertical case study examines the manifestation of parallel peace education initiatives within the formal education sector at the national and local levels. Rooted at the local level, this mixed methods research identifies how peace education is conceptualized and put into action at the Daraja Academy, a private all-girls’ secondary boarding school. A comparative qualitative analysis examines how the national Peace Education Programme was conceptualized and identifies key stakeholders advancing this initiative. Results indicate that the Daraja Academy offers a combination of quality education for girls, gender transformative human rights education, and critical peace education to invite students to activate their innate agency for individual and collective positive social change. Through an examination of the school ecosystem at the Daraja Academy, factors enabling education for peace have been identified. At the national level, capacities for peacebuilding have been integrated into recent national curriculum reform ii efforts demonstrating a sustainable and responsive platform for schools to integrate peace education.     6 Appendix 1 Rationale for and Background to the Development of Guidance Notes on Safer School Construction Safer School Construction: The Issue In January 2009, the Center for Research on Epidemiology of Disasters (CRED) high- lighted a spike in the number of people killed in natural disasters: the 2008 death toll of 235,816 was more than three times the annual average of the previous eight years. Moreover, it noted that the biggest losses, from Cyclone Nargis and the Sichuan tremors, could have been substantially reduced had schools been built more earthquake-resilient. The death of children and adults in these schools causes irreplaceable loss to families, communities and countries and life-long injury to millions of children around the world. Moreover, disasters continually destroy or damage school infrastructure, which is a great economic loss for a country; the cost of reconstruction can be a substantial burden on the economy. In addition to providing a space for children’s learning, schools often serve as centers for community activities and constitute social infrastructure that is key in the fight against poverty, illiteracy and a disease free world. The Education for All and Millennium Development Goals cannot be achieved without the construction of safer and more disas- ter resilient education facilities. Safer School Construction Guidance Notes: The Vision The institutionalization of guiding principles for the construction of more disaster resilient schools has been identified by governments, international organizations, and school com- munities as a critical need for reducing, and ideally preventing, the devastation caused by natural disasters, illustrated most recently in China, Haiti, and Pakistan.

Abstract Little art-historical scholarship has been dedicated to fine art responding to the British home front during the First World War. Within pre-war British society concepts of sexual difference functioned to promote masculine authority. Nevertheless in Britain during wartime enlarged female employment alongside the presence of injured servicemen suggested feminine authority and masculine weakness, thereby temporarily destabilizing pre-war values. Adopting a socio-historical perspective, this thesis argues that artworks engaging with the home front have been largely excluded from art history because of partiality shown towards masculine authority within the matrices of British society. Furthermore, this situation has been supported by the writing of art history, which has, arguably, followed similar premise.

There are two aspects to the problem: one historiographical and the other historical. 'Mau Mau' has generated a huge literature, and it remains a contentious issue in both historical and popular thought. In spite of abundant controversy, however, much of the history remains obscure. We will thus start by surveying and analyzing the literature before engaging in individual research on select historical topics. Requirements: Students will be expected to write two major papers during the course of the seminar: the first a critical review of the literature on one of the topics listed for weeks 2-9, and the second a research paper on a select aspect of the overall topic. In each case, students should distribute copies oftheir paper to the other seminar participants (with two copies to me) by Tuesday noon preceding the relevant class. Research papers will first be presented in class and then revised for final submission at the end of the semester.
