PERFORMED IDENTITIES: HEAVY METAL MUSICIANS BETWEEN 1984 AND 1991 Bradley C. Klypchak A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2007 Committee: Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Dr. John Makay Graduate Faculty Representative Dr. Ron E. Shields Dr. Don McQuarie © 2007 Bradley C. Klypchak All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized. -

Seven Days Live
SEVEN DAYS LIVE “Seven Days Live” captures Poison (Bret Michaels, Bobby Dall, Rikki Rockett and Richie Kotzen) at the height of their international success with a full show recorded at London’s Hammersmith Apollo in 1993. Featuring classic tracks like Unskinny Bop, Talk Dirty To Me, Every Rose Has Its Thorn, Nothin’ But A Good Time and more, the band demonstrates what 10 years of hard work can do. In the early 80’s, the band formed and were soon signed to Enigma Records where they recorded debut album “Look What The Cat Dragged In”. The album spawned three US top ten hits and went on to sell over two million copies. Second album “Open Up And Say...Ahh!” outsold its predecessor, with several hits, including US number one “Every Rose Has Its Thorn”. Poison continues to tour and record – retaining their massive worldwide fanbase. Track List 1. The Scream 2. Strike Up the Band 3. Ride The Wind 4. Good Love 5. Body Talk 6. Poison Bio.Docx
BAND BIO In a time when most music is manipulated, copied, pasted and auto tuned in digital recording studios, the question that always begs to be answered now more than ever is, "But, can they play it live?" Well, Poison can and always have. But, in the case of Poison, to just expect the music to sound good live is to short change the entire phenomenon. While nothing replaces actually being at an open air concert, today's technology does allow us to capture the experience like never before. Hi Def cameras, state of the art lighting, mind-blowing camera stabilizers and top notch recording technology now can capture the action like never before. Live, Raw & Uncut is like a journey into the radical world of Poison's live show. Professional performing musicians are never satisfied with their entire performance and so many of these recorded concerts are performed and recorded several times to find the best of the batch. Not so in the case of Live, Raw & Uncut. Poison decided that what you get live is what you get on the DVD. So, what do you get? Passion! Fun! Fury! Intensity! All in all, you get what you get at a Poison concert! What don't you get? You get no predictability and Poisonlikes it that way! Playing live is what Poison is all about. The music acts as a soundtrack to their live show. If you are an avid Poisonfan, this gem is a must have for your collection. If you have never seen Poison live, you'll be convinced that this is a band to be reckoned with. -
