PERFORMED IDENTITIES: HEAVY METAL MUSICIANS BETWEEN 1984 AND 1991 Bradley C. Klypchak A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2007 Committee: Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Dr. John Makay Graduate Faculty Representative Dr. Ron E. Shields Dr. Don McQuarie © 2007 Bradley C. Klypchak All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

  • Richie Kotzen My Angel
My Angel Richie Kotzen Now I could sit around and talk about all my problems Or try to tell you how I feel But I can't get that deep And if you wonder why I always seem so distant Well there's more than what you see and I want you to know If I could change at all You know that I would change it all And you would be my angel If I could do it I would do it right now If I had to fall I know that I would have it all And you would be my angel And I would never worry about nothing Now I could sit around and say I need forgiveness But I would never put you through the pain Because you're worth more than I can give So I feel myself slipping deeper into a dream world You and I in heaven in the clouds and I don't wanna wake up Oh If I could change at all You know that I would change it all And you would be my angel If I could do it I would do it right now If I had to fall I know that I would have it all And you would be my angel And I would never worry about nothing It's been too long and I'm too far down I just wanna be the one you can't live without I know you're too good and I'm too far gone You're better off if I'm not letting you down Oh If I could change at all You know that I would change it all And you would be my angel If I could do it I would do it right now If I had to fall I know that I would have it all And you would be my angel And I would never worry about nothing Tištěno z pisnicky-akordy.cz Sponzor: www.srovnavac.cz - vyberte si pojištění online!
