We have organized a wonderful festival this year in- cluding over 60 feature length and short films, semi- nars and discussions. Our festival crew have worked around the clock to bring you the best selection of Asian and Asian Diaspora films from around the world. This year, we not only look outward for modern Asian cinema, but also in our own backyard with our “MADE IN HOLLAND” Film Lab project. Traditionally Asian cinema has been defined as films made in Asia. As our world becomes more globally diverse and immigration increases yearly, cultural and geographic borders become less defined and more transparent. The Netherlands has a long history of being open to Asian influence starting with the colonies in Indonesia and Asian trade during the Golden Age. Modern immi- gration has brought many more Asians to Europe and with them, a new hybrid cultural phenomenon, the European-Asian. With our “MADE IN HOLLAND” Film Lab project, we seek to give a voice to this relatively new group specifi- cally through film as an artistic and communicative tool. We also have a large percentage of films from Indone- “Everybody can cook, but the difference is our Finishing Touch!” sia, China, India, Thailand and the Philippines as we recognize and acknowledge the former homelands of our Dutch-Asian Citizens who are sometimes 2nd and Authentic Chinese banquets 3rd generation children of immigrants. Films from Business lunch and dinners Japan and Korea to Hawaii also represent the Modern Chinese specialities wonderful diversity that make up Asia. Whereas, I usually visit for three or four days, this time was for only two. As is often the case, the less time one has, the more there is to do. I am not complaining, mind you, because it resulted in two wonderful interviews that are included in this issue. We first interviewed Bai Ling several years ago when she was filming Love Ranch with Helen Mirren and Joe Pesci. This year, we were fortunate to have her join us at the Operation Smile gala where she attracted considerable interest on the red carpet as she struck her signature “Bai Ling” poses. The following day, we met for an interview during which Bai offered us some insight into what drives her and counters some of her public persona. If you happen to look at her acting resume on imdb, you cannot help but be impressed by the sheer volume of this actor’s work. Millions of fans have enjoyed the film Pitch Perfect which was released last month. I had not had the opportunity to see it when I received a call from Hana Mae Lee’s publicist asking if I would like to interview her.

Most of these films have been released under more than one title, and while we've done our best to use the one that's most likely to be familiar, that doesn't guarantee you aren't trying to find Crippled Avengers and don't know we've got it as The Return of the 5 Deadly Venoms. And so, we've gathered as many alternative titles as we can find, including their original language title(s), and arranged them in alphabetical order in this index to help you out. Remember, English language articles ("a", "an", "the") are ignored in the sort, but foreign articles are NOT ignored. Hey, my Japanese is a little rusty, and some languages just don't have articles. CINEMATIC HONG KONG OF WONG KAR-WAI by HAIHONG LI ABSTRACT In order to promote an understanding of the centrality of space and the intimate relationship between space and identity in Wong Kar-wai’s films, this dissertation examines the director’s construction of cinematic space and the characters’ sense of who they are in relation to Hong Kong in his six films Days of Being Wild, In the Mood for Love, 2046, As Tears Go by, Chungking Express, and Fallen Angels. The investigation of Wong’s use of cinematic space involves the analysis of his selection of location and strategic employment of the mise-en-scène, camera angles, lenses, lighting, and music, which constitute his fictional world. It is my assertion that Wong’s construction of Hong Kong in these films responds to the formation and transformation of identity and showcases the impact of colonialism, modernization, decolonization, globalization, and postmodern culture upon the lives of Hong Kong inhabitants. MALARIA AND GLOBAL NETWORKS OF TROPICAL MEDICINE IN MODERN CHINA, 1919-1950 A Dissertation submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences of Georgetown University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History By Yubin Shen, M.A. Washington, D.C. April 10, 2017 Copyright 2017 by Yubin Shen All Rights Reserved ii MALARIA AND GLOBAL NETWORKS OF TROPICAL MEDICINE IN MODERN CHINA, 1919-1950 Yubin Shen, M.A. Thesis Advisor: Carol A. Benedict, Ph.D. ABSTRACT Based on multi-sited primary archival sources, this dissertation explores the origins and development of tropical medicine as a new medical subfield in twentieth- century China from 1919 to 1950. Inspired by various network theories, including social network theory and the concept of global scientific networks, it illustrates how China became an international center for tropical medicine by the 1950s. It further demonstrates how modern Chinese tropical medicine developed out of the investigations and interactions of a transnational cadre of scientific and philanthropic elite (both Chinese and foreign) working in many different registers and on many different levels, who were linked together by complex local, national, and global networks. By illuminating the multifaceted experiences of these different networks in promoting Chinese tropical medicine and by demonstrating how they were, to varying degrees, driven by state-building, war and national defense, philanthropic, international cooperation, and individual professional agendas, this dissertation provides a new interpretation of the history of tropical medicine in China. It emends the “colonial medicine model,” still dominant in the field of the history of medicine, which treats tropical medicine solely as “a tool of empire” used to bolster western imperial expansion and colonial rule over the non-western world.
