BY W. S. JAMES. CHICAGO: BONOHUE, HBNNEBERRY & CO., PUBLISHERS. «I«T»RKD ACCORDING TO ACT OF CONGBESS By W. S. JAMES, 1893. A SKETCa OF THE AUTHOR'S LIPB. On the 27th day of August, 1856, in Tarrant County, Texas, I drew my first breath, and from the best informa tion I can gather, my mother—bless her dear soul!—shed many a bitter tear over her first born, because it was said that I was the ugliest little bundle of humanity that could have been found in seventeen States and fourteen Terri tories; and to add to the discomfort of my child mother (for she was only a little past sixteen when I was born) they who know, tell me that I kept up a continual squall for three months of my first experience on a cattle ranch, and from the shape of my head and my incessant bawling it was vaguely hinted by some of the wiseacres that I was a little idiot. So between my homeliness and uncertain mental caliber no wonder that mother, in her new experi ence, should become disheartened; but, thanks to a propi tious climate and the refining influences of a leather strap judiciously applied, I eventually developed into quite a presentable youngster, when asleep.

Prior to this, the grunge ‘scene’ had been centred on Seattle and the Sub Pop record label. Often described as a cross between punk and heavy metal (Mazullo 719), musically grunge had a ‘dark’, guitar-based sound based around a traditional rock line up (guitar, bass and drums). An unusual feature of the grunge scene was the relatively high proportion of female performers and bands, and this, combined with explicit anti-sexism stances taken by prominent male grunge musicians such as Kurt Cobain, and its close proximity to the feminist Riot Grrrl movement, served to position it as a more gender-neutral scene than many others in ‘rock’.

Hardcore punk-rock had been mostly a male phenomenon. Girls were excluded from hardcore the same way they were excluded in society from many other male-only rituals, whether street gangs or USA football. The "riot grrrrls" movement of the 1990s changed the sociopolitical landscape of punk-rock by introducing the "girl factor" into the equation of frustration/ depression/ desperation/ anger. The riot-grrrrls movement originated largely in and around Seattle (Olympia, to be precise), and indeed it was Seattle that boasted the most fertile scene for female-only bands. The movement's manifesto was the article "Women, sex and rock and roll", published by "Puncture" in 1989. The first radio program to address the angry young girls was "Your Dream Girl", conducted by Lois Maffeo on Olympia's KAOS. One of the earliest riot-grrrrls was Molly Neuman, who joined Allison Wolfe to create the fanzine "Girl Germs", one of the main alternative media for college girls. In the summer of 1991 they celebrated themselves at the Olympia campus, shouting their slogan "Revolution Girl Style Now!" The mood had been changing throughout the 1980s: the magazine "Sassy" had been founded already in 1987 as an alternative, not afraid to tackle brutal themes, to the conventional magazines for teenage girls.

Girl Band Guide A Directory of Women-Oriented Alternative Music Bands with Female Vocalists Issue #8, June 1994 Please send info, updates, and corrections to: Carrie Carolin PO Box 94221 Seattle, WA 98124 Internet: [email protected] This list is available for $1, CASH, from the above address. Don't send stamps, checks, money orders, or coins, please! The list is published and updated quarterly. The list is copyrighted but you may feel free to make as many copies as you need to share with friends etc. as long as you leave the list intact and complete, and leave my name and address on it so I can continue to receive updates. Please do NOT post this guide to Internet newsgroups without checking with me first, as it generally makes my mailbox overflow when I am unprepared for it. Please only send info on bands with FEMALE VOCALISTS, who sing LEAD vocals, or sing dual vocals with a male, as long as the female sings on 30% on the songs (backup vocals do NOT count). When you send me info about your band please include members' names, a booking phone number, and a fan mail address - a lot of letters to bands are getting lost at the band's record label. Photos look shitty because of the xeroxed format of this zine, but if you still want to send them, I'll put them in. Listing format is: Band name; home town/band fan mail address, phone; members' names; type of music; discography; record label/address; booking phone number. 360's Salem, Massachusetts.
