I basically started my medical transition the day that I started my research, which means that my new (at the time) colleagues at Cultural Encounters at the Department of Culture and Identity (Roskilde University) followed my physical transformations firsthand. They were back then, and have been ever since, extremely welcoming and have offered me a forum for daily encouragement and inspiration. I could not have dreamed of a better and more supportive environment from which to conduct my studies. Being part of the Center for Gender, Power and Diversity (Roskilde University) has also stimulated my research, and I want to thank all of you for great conversations during our gender lunches, while teaching together, or during our discussions in the reading group. A very warm thanks also goes to my two supervisors, Birgitta Frello at Cultural Encounters (Roskilde University) and Kate O’Riordan at the Department of Media and Film (Sussex University, UK), who have helped me keep focus, remember to take breaks, and have encouraged me to refine my readings. This research has enabled me to travel abroad, and I have embraced that opportunity by participating in numerous conferences where I have met great scholars from all over the world. Most memorable and inspirational has been my stay as a visiting scholar at Berkeley Center for New Media, University of California at Berkeley, USA, where Abigail De Kosnik was a great encouragement. I feel very grateful for being able to experience the very special vibe of San Francisco and meeting so many interesting people, and I carry all of you within me as warm memories for rainy days. The research has also enabled me to get in contact with a lot of trans people, not least the vloggers I am writing about, and I cannot express how grateful I am for the valuable insights this has given me. 7 I am blessed with a lot of very dear friends. I want to thank my affect theoretical reading group for offering me constant intellectual stimulation and keeping me on my toes, and in particular Mons Bissenbakker Frederiksen and Mathias Danbolt for giving me valuable feedback on parts of my PhD. I also want to thank all the friends who help me unwind and remind me of all the other things that life has to offer, in particular Yoo Falk Jensen for being a real buddy. The period of my PhD has also included other major events; among the positive was that I met my father for the first time ever. I would like to thank him for helping me to connect with other parts of my history and creating new stories of belonging.

BUSINESS 10/31/2012 @ 2:08PM Celebrities Who Give Us Nightmares Reality show fame can be lucrative (just look at Bethenny Frankel) but it can also go horribly wrong. Spencer Pratt made a splash with his villainous performance on The Hills, but since then his career hasn’t work out quite like he had hoped. Instead of writing books, starting a fashion line and producing more TV, Pratt ended up standing by Heidi Montag’s side while she underwent multiple plastic surgeries to turn herself into the world’s saddest living Barbie doll. Perhaps that’s why the public sees Pratt as the creepiest Just in time for Halloween, here are the celebrities who creep America out the most, based on survey celebrity out there, according to E-Poll Market data from E-Poll Market Research, whose E-Score Research. Another reality star who creeps us all out: Courtney Stodden. The teen is best-known for marrying 50- year-old actor Doug Hutchinson when she was only 16. Somehow, these two are still getting publicity. Maybe it’s because of the way Stodden dresses.

  • BODY TYPE: TYPOGRAPHIC TATTOOS Or HOW I BECAME a TATTOO EXPERT WITHOUT REALLY TRYING
BODY TYPE: TYPOGRAPHIC TATTOOS or HOW I BECAME A TATTOO EXPERT WITHOUT REALLY TRYING By Ina Saltz, author of “Body Type: Intimate Messages Etched in Flesh” (Abrams Image, 2006) MY INVOLVEMENT WITH THE WORLD OF TATTOOS began in the most unlikely of ways. I was traveling cross-town on the M86 bus when I spotted an interesting-looking young man with a large text-only tattoo on his right forearm; it spelled out “happy” in a typeface which I instantly recognized as Helvetica. The fact that it was in lower-case letters and so tightly kerned that the letters were touching was especially intriguing to me as a designer and a typophile. I had never seen a tattoo quite like this one—sans serif! Not being in the habit of talking to strangers in New York City, I debated mightily before approaching him...but my curiosity finally got the better of me. “Are you a graphic designer?” I asked. Why, yes, he was. “And would you mind if I took a photo of your tattoo to show my students? I teach typography at City College.” No problem. I whipped out my digital camera and managed to get one shot and to grab his proffered business card before I jumped off at my stop. That evening I uploaded the photo and went to the Web site on his business card to send him the image with a proper thank you message. Imagine my astonishment to find our entire conversation recounted on his blog! As often happens when encountering something new, having seen one typographic tattoo, I now started to see them everywhere (it was August and a lot of skin was visible).

4 The Guardian Weekly 21.05.10 Learning English Coursebooks and the curse of celebrity Opinion Lindsay Clandfi eld When we teach English as an inter- national language, what are we also teaching? As language teachers we are in a curious and unique position. We do not have a fi xed subject in the same way that the history teacher teaches history or the geography teacher teaches geography . The language teacher teaches grammar, vocabulary, reading, writing, speak- ing and listening skills, but these are all “how”. They are not “what”. Language teachers are cursed with no content, but also blessed because everything can be our content. Is the “what” we teach culture? Language and cultural studies used to be seen as inseparable. If you learnt English you learned about British people, their way of life, their literature and cultural history. If you were studying American English then you would learn about the US . Consolidated as the girl power discourse and girls in crisis discourse, the tension between these two intertwined discourses created a space for new narratives of female adolescence in the decade between 1995 and 2005. As sites of cultural construction and representation, teen films reveal the narratives of girlhood. The films under consideration serve as useful exemplars for an examination of how such discourses become mainstreamed, pervading society’s image of female adolescence.

New York Law Journal March 31, 2014 Monday Section: EXPERT ANALYSIS; p.3, col.1; Vol. 251; No. 60 Length: 2006 words Byline: Elizabeth McNamara And Samuel M. Bayard Body I n February, former Mob Wives star Karen Gravano filed a right-of-publicity lawsuit against the makers of Grand Theft Auto V, claiming that they misappropriated her image and life story for a character in the popular video game. Being a colorful story, even the New York tabloids took notice: The hit video game "Grand Theft Auto V" is illegally imitating life, according to a former "Mob Wives" star.-Daily News1 The makers of "Grand Theft Auto" better hope they don't wake up next to a horse head.-New York Post2 Media lawyers were interested too. Not because Ms. Gravano is a reality star, or because she's the daughter of Salvatore (Sammy the Bull) Gravano, a famous mobster who turned state's evidence. Not even because Grand Theft Auto is one of the most successful videogame franchises around. Media lawyers took notice because this case is one more in a string of recent cases raising a significant common question: To what extent does the law protect the rights of content creators- writers, filmmakers, musicians, visual artists, photographers, and yes, videogame makers-to draw on real-life individuals and events to create expressive works? For years this was a relatively settled issue particularly in New York, and creators took comfort that they were largely protected from right-of-publicity claims. This status quo has been upended with a growing spate of successful suits against expressive works elsewhere in the country.

  • Lindsay Lohan
Lindsay Lohan This sassy red-headed actress was born in New York City on July 2, 1986 to parents Michael and Dina Lohan. At the age of three, she starred in numerous print ads and television spots. In 1998, she landed the lead in Disney’s remake of The Parent Trap. Still a classic today, the film grossed millions at the box office and began Lohan’s rise to fame. Her success in the Disney film led to the opportunity to star in other movies from the major motion picture company, including Freaky Friday and Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen. In 2004, Lohan starred in what is known as one of the greatest chick flicks ever made. Tina Fey’s Mean Girls became the highest grossing movie that year and earned the young actress a few awards for her role as Cady Heron. In 2005, the star returned to her roots when she appeared in Disney’s Herbie: Fully Loaded. With yet another box office hit, her career was at a high, and her growing fan base allowed her to expand her career into music. She released two albums in 2004 and 2005, which were both a success. During her Disney days, Lohan dated singer Aaron Carter from 2002 to 2003 and they were a hot celebrity couple. But as Lohan’s celebrity status grew, she found herself in the Hollywood nightlife all too often. In 2007, she started down a dangerous path filled with struggles and controversy. She has been arrested many times for reckless driving and landed herself in rehab for both drugs and alcohol on more than one occasion.
