Figure 5.6 showed the phosphate concentration at the said river. Results showed that three (3) out of the seven (7) stations established failed to meet the DENR criteria. For Total Suspended Solids (TSS), Calapan River should not exceed a 30 mg/L increase in the said parameter to be able to meet the Class C criteria. Results showed that the TSS concentrations during CY 2011, from each of the stations and for the overall average, are all within the criteria as compared from the baseline value as shown in Figure 5.9. Additional water quality parameters were monitored at Mogpog River during CY 2010, namely: pH, Total Cadmium (Cd), Total Lead (Pb) and Dissolved Copper (Cu). In terms of color, Bacungan river met the DENR water quality criteria on the whole stretch of the water body for the said parameter based on the present respective classifications (Class A – Upstream, Class B – Midstream, and Class C – Downstream), as shown in Figure 5.19. Complete assessment, however, could not be made for this parameter as there are only two (2) out of the four (4) sampling events where this parameter was measured.

Results of the water quality monitoring during CY 2011 showed a decrease in the average Nitrite concentration of Bacungan River from its upstream portion to its downstream portion (Figure 5.20). There are no DENR water quality criteria for Nitrites for all the respective classifications of Bacungan River. However, the data can serve as basis for possible sources of oxygen depletion through nitrogen conversions (Nitrites to Nitrates).

5. Boac River (Marinduque)

EMB Region IVB sustained the monitoring of Boac River up to this date to determine impacts of the CY 1996 mine tailings incident on its water quality.

For CY 2011, Boac River exhibited an average concentration of 3 mg/L for total suspended solids. The river had been improving through the years. During the four quarters of monitoring, it was only during the first quarter that the river showed trace amounts of dissolved copper however the concentration is lower than the DENR criterion.

TOXIC CHEMICALS AND HAZARDOUS WASTE MANAGEMENT

The Regional Office together with the support from PENROs and CENROs accomplished all the target activities under Toxic Chemical and Hazardous Waste Management Section. Strict monitoring of industries was conducted in order to accomplish all targets. EMB MIMAROPA conducted in joint Aerobics Exercise with EMB CALABARZON on March 18, 2011 at Quirino Granstand, Roxas Blvd., Manila. The activity aims to promote health and wellness program among EMB employees. The staffs and personnel wore violet shirts and gathered at 6:30 AM at the said venue. MOA Signing for Adopt-an-Estero Program in Puerto Princesa City, Palawan

In line with the celebration of World Water Day and Women’s Month, EMB MIMAROPA conducted a motorcade and MOA Signing for Adopt-an-Estero Program in Asturias Hotel, Puerto Princesa City on March 22, 2011.
