Commencement May 11, 2018 | Mankato, Minnesota Commencement May 11, 2018 | Mankato, Minnesota Welcome We welcome you to this ceremony of commencement at Bethany Lutheran College. We are proud of these graduates, confident that they have grown both intellectually and spiritually during their days here. Your presence at this milestone in their lives is another sign of your support and love, which has continued over many years, and which we know they deeply appreciate. It is our prayer that Bethany Lutheran College, and especially the lessons learned here, will remain in the lives of these young men and women on whichever paths they are led by the Lord. Order of Procession The commencement ceremony begins with the procession of participants. The chair of the faculty assembly leads the procession carrying the college mace, followed by the college president and the officiants, including the vice president of academic affairs, a member of the board of regents, and the chaplain. The graduation marshal follows the officiants and leads the rest of the procession. The emeriti lead the faculty, who march in order of seniority, and the graduates follow the faculty. Banners are carried by junior marshals and represent the various academic divisions of the college. Academic Apparel Today’s graduates and faculty members are wearing ceremonial regalia that conform to traditions and practices of the academy. The graduates are wearing black gowns with an open pointed sleeve. Ceremony participants with advanced or terminal degrees wear gowns that represent their earned degree. Those holding a master’s degree wear a gown with an oblong sleeve, open at the wrist. The oblong shape is square cut in the back, the front section tailored with an arc cut. Those who have earned a doctorate wear a gown distinguished by velvet trim on the front facings and three stripes on the sleeves. This trim may be black or may have color identifying the individual’s major field of academic achievement. Ceremonial regalia also includes academic hoods. The size and cut of the academic hood indicates the level and type of degree an individual holds. The lining of the hood, in Bethany’s case red and white, indicates the school colors and the outer velvet trim indicates the bachelor of arts degree. As with the bachelor’s hood, the lining of the master’s and doctor’s hoods have the same color designations of the school where the degree was earned and velvet trim indicating the field in which the degree is held. White: Arts, Letters, Humanities Pink: Music Yellow: Science Olive: Business Dark Blue: Philosophy Cream: Social Science Light Blue: Education Sage Green: Physical Education Citron: Social Work Brown: Fine Arts Salmon: Public Health Scarlet: Theology Canary: Library Science Photography & Video Professional photography and video will be taken at today’s ceremony. Bethany will be sending one 4"x 6" photograph to each graduate. Candid photographs from the ceremony will be available to download and a video link will be available from the commencement web page: www.blc.edu/spring2018. Parry, 1916 Directed by Dennis Marzolf All those who trust in Christ are blest And find in Him eternal rest; This world’s allurements we despise And fix on Christ alone our eyes. Through Him we heirs of heav’n are made; O Brother, Christ, extend Thine aid That we may firmly trust in Thee, And through Thee live eternally. O Christ, our Savior, Helper Friend, Be with us till our journey’s end. In mercy guide us by Thy grace Till we behold Thy glorious face. Though Satan rage, His pow’r is gone His thundering roar can harm us none Our strong Defender hurls him down, And wins for us a heav’nly crown. Author unknown, 1607; 2. K. • PELSB-Approved Teacher Preparation Providers
DATE: March 27th, 2020 TO: PELSB-Approved Teacher Preparation Providers FROM: Alex Liuzzi, Executive Director RE: Discretionary Variances-Student Teaching The Teacher Preparation Committee met on Wednesday, March 25, 2020 to review variance requests from 28 providers from across the state who have expressed major concerns with their candidates’ abilities to complete the student teaching requirements, as well as other program requirements, as set forth in administrative rule, given the state-wide school closures and other efforts to curb the spread of COVID-19. First, and foremost, the Teacher Preparation Committee wants to acknowledge that the COVID-19 pandemic is creating unprecedented circumstances for our preparation providers, candidates, and school partners. The committee wants to thank the many providers who submitted variance requests and information about the status of their student teachers and other impacted candidates on such short notice. The information and context was invaluable. On March 27, 2020, the Teacher Preparation Committee presented these extenuating circumstances to the Board. Based on the Teacher Preparation Committee’s recommendation, the Board approved the following discretionary variances for certain teacher preparation providers: Variances of Minnesota Rule 8705.1000, subp. 3G for teacher candidates who have completed 10 weeks or more of face-to-face student teaching with the conditions listed below. Variances of Minnesota Rule 8705.1000, subp. 3G for teacher candidates who have completed 6 - 9 weeks of face-to-face student teaching supplemented by online or distance learning student teaching for a total of 10 weeks of student teaching (weeks do not have to be continuous) with the conditions listed below.

  • Luther on Education 2017
LUTHER ON EDUCATION 2017 Schooling for Life MARTIN LUTHER EDUCATOR Rarely has the picture of Martin Luther in his dual role as educator at home and at school, as parent and professor, been treated extensively in English.1 Yet home and academic robe were daily fare for most of his life. From October 22, 1512, when the Wittenberg faculty formally received the twenty-eight year old monk as Lecturer on the Bible, through his marriage to Catherine von Bora in June, 1525, at age forty-two, until his death twenty-one years later, Luther's daily routine normally shuttled between duties at home and at school. If we want to know the man as he is, we have knocked at the right door. Those who expect to come away from the visit with a notebook full of abstract parental and educational principles will be sadly disappointed. We would be unfaithful to the Great Reformer's own mode and manner, were we to regale you with high-sounding theories of education abstracted and distilled from Luther's experience at home and in the classroom. To get to know Luther's views on education, we must become acquainted with him personally, as a father and as a teacher. Our approach, therefore, will happily be descriptive rather than prescriptive; hopefully, it will be edifying as well as instructive. In its own way it is strange that the English-speaking world has not readily acknowledged Luther's place in the history of education. Columbia University, a leading teacher-training institution in our land, inscribed in stone a list of modern educators on one of its buildings.
