Paris Saint-Germain FC host SL Benfica on matchday two in the UEFA Champions League with room for improvement after losing out in the sides' two previous ties. • Both sides opened their Group C campaigns with wins, PSG defeating Olympiacos FC 4-1 away and Benfica seeing off RSC Anderlecht 2-0. Previous meetings • The teams met two years ago in the UEFA Europa League round of 16 when Benfica successfully defended their 2-1 lead from the first leg, drawing 1-1 at Parc des Princes. • The Lisbon club had come from behind in the first game after Péguy Luyindula opened the scoring. They levelled through Maxi Pereira with Franco Jara scoring the winner. • Benfica increased that advantage in with Nicolás Gaitán's 27th-minute strike and although Mathieu Bodmer's sumptuous volley brought the scores level on the night, Jorge Jesus' men went through. • The lineups in Paris on 17 March 2011 were: PSG: Apoula Édel, Ceará (Maurice 44), Sakho, Tiéné, Mevlüt Erdinç (Giuly 68), Makelele, Bodmer (Hoarau 68), Nenê, Chantôme, Armand, Jallet. Benfica: Roberto, Luisão, Javi García, Cardozo, Salvio, Aimar (César Peixoto 80), Maxi Pereira, Coentrão, Gaitán (Jardel 90), Sidnei, Saviola (Carlos Martins 64). • The sides' only other fixtures came in the 2006/07 UEFA Cup round of 16, with Fernando Santos' Benfica losing 2-1 to Paul Le Guen's PSG in Paris, but prevailing with a 3-1 victory in Lisbon. Simão's 89th-minute penalty proved to be decisive following Youssuf Mulumbu's dismissal for a foul on Léo in the box. Match background • PSG, in the group stage for the sixth time, are unbeaten in all six home games against Portuguese opposition, winning four and drawing two.

• The last meeting came in the 2012/13 UEFA Champions League group stage when they beat FC Porto 2-1 to claim first place in the section, having lost 1-0 in Portugal. Home and away against Portuguese teams, their record is W5 D3 L4. • Benfica's last visit to France came in last season's UEFA Europa League round of 16 when a 3-2 win at FC Girondins de Bordeaux completed a 4-2 aggregate win and made it four wins in their last five fixtures overall against opposition. • Their 24 fixtures against French sides ended W12 D6 L6 (W4 D2 L6 in France) • Last year PSG reached the quarter-finals where they drew 2-2 at home to FC Barcelona and 1-1 in Spain, going out on away goals. They had started with a 4-1 home win against FC Dynamo Kyiv and also overcame GNK Dinamo Zagreb (4-0) and Porto. In the round of 16 the French champions won 2-1 at Valencia CF, the home leg ending 1-1. • In their ninth participation, the Eagles, twice winners of the European Champion Clubs' Cup, will be looking to improve on last season's campaign when they finished third in the group. They began with a 0-0 draw away to Celtic FC and also lost 2-1 at FC Spartak Moskva and drew 0-0 at FC Barcelona. • The Portuguese side subsequently entered the UEFA Europa League and first won away at Bayer 04 Leverkusen before victory in Bordeaux. In the quarter-finals they drew 1-1 at Newcastle United FC for a 4-2 aggregate success and then made light of a 1-0 defeat at Fenerbahçe SK to win 3-1 at home in the semi-final second leg.

• In the Amsterdam final Benfica lost 2-1 to Chelsea FC. Óscar Cardozo's penalty drew them level following Fernando Torres' opener only for Branislav Ivanović to head a winner in the last minute of added time. Team ties • Jorge Jesus faced PSG in the 2008/09 UEFA Europa League while in charge of SC Braga, losing 1-0 on aggregate in the round of 16. • Nico Gaitán, Ezequiel Garay, Eduardo Salvio and Enzo Peréz have played alongside Javier Pastore and Ezequiel Lavezzi for Argentina.

• Luisão played alongside Thiago Silva and Alex in two friendlies for Brazil in 2006 and 2011 respectively. • Maxwell and Luisão were team-mates at Cruzeiro EC in 2000/01. • Nemanja Matić played with Alex at Chelsea in 2009/10.

9 Paris Saint-Germain FC - SL Benfica Wednesday 2 October 2013 - 20.45CET, (20.45 local time) Match press kit Parc des Princes, Paris Head coach Paris Saint-Germain FC: Laurent Blanc Date of birth: 19 November 1965 Nationality: French Playing career: Montpellier Hérault SC, Napoli SSC, Nîmes Olympique SC, AS Saint-Étienne, AJ Auxerre, FC Barcelona, Olympique de Marseille, FC Internazionale Milano, Manchester United FC Coaching career: FC Girondins de Bordeaux, France, Paris Saint-Germain FC • The defender's 20-year club career brought a French Cup win with Montpellier in 1990, a 1996 league and cup double with Auxerre, the 1997 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup with Barcelona and a Premier League title with United just before retirement in 2003. • Nicknamed Le Président on account of his authority, elegance and leadership. Famous for 'good luck' kiss on goalkeeper Fabien Barthez's bald head before kick-offs, he won the 1998 FIFA World Cup on home soil after scoring France's golden goal winner against Paraguay in the last 16, but missed the Paris final after being sent off in the semi- final. • Helped France win UEFA EURO 2000, scoring against Denmark in the group stage, before retiring from international football that year with 97 caps and 16 goals. • Spent four years gaining coaching qualifications before taking charge of Bordeaux in June 2007. His team finished second in his first season and won a championship and League Cup double in 2009. Guided Bordeaux to the 2009/10 UEFA Champions League quarter-finals before succeeding Raymond Domenech as France coach that summer. • Blanc's France lost their first two games but then went 23 matches unbeaten prior to two losses at UEFA EURO 2012, the second in the quarter-finals against Spain. He subsequently left his post as national coach but returned to management when stepping into Carlo Ancelotti's shoes at PSG in June 2013. SL Benfica: Jorge Jesus Date of birth: 24 July 1954 Nationality: Portuguese Playing Career: Sporting Clube de Portugal, GD Peniche, SC Olhanense, CF Os Belenenses, GD Riopele, Juventude SC, UD Leiria, Vitória FC, SC Farense, CF Estrela da Amadora, Benfica e Castelo Branco, SR Almancilense Coaching career: Amora FC, FC Felgueiras, CF Estrela da Amadora (twice), Vitória FC, Vitória SC, Moreirense FC, UD Leiria, CF Os Belenenses, SC Braga, SL Benfica • A midfielder at Sporting, Jesus enjoyed a long if low-key career with a number of smaller Portuguese sides before moving into coaching with fourth division Amora after hanging up his boots in 1989, leading them to a title. • More success followed at Felgueiras, whom he led from the third division to the Liga in successive seasons, though they were relegated in their third campaign under his command in 1995/96. • Further Liga experience came at hometown side Estrela da Amadora, Setúbal and Guimarães, though he endured another relegation with Moreirense in 2004/05. In 2006/07, he guided Belenenses to fifth place and the Portuguese Cup final, where despite losing to Sporting they earned a place in the UEFA Cup. • Even better followed at Braga in 2008/09 as he guided them to UEFA Intertoto Cup success and subsequently the UEFA Cup round of 16. A fifth-place Liga finish prompted Benfica to lure him back to Lisbon in 2009 and Jesus rewarded their faith with the league title and League Cup in his debut campaign. • After completing a hat-trick of Portuguese League Cup triumphs in 2012, Jesus's Benfica came tantalisingly close to an even bigger hat-trick in 2013, only to finish runners-up in both the Portuguese Liga and Cup and lose the UEFA Europa League final to Chelsea FC. Despite that disappointment, he signed a two-year contract extension in June 2013.

UEFA Champions League: Did you know? • Last season Chelsea FC became the first defending champions to fail to get through a group stage since the UEFA Champions League began. (This record, like the others, includes the seasons between 1999/2000 and 2002/03 that featured a second group stage). In 1992/93, FC Barcelona were the reigning European Champion Clubs' Cup holders and lost 4-3 on aggregate in the second round to PFC CSKA Moskva. • No team has successfully defended the UEFA Champions League trophy with AC Milan (1989, 1990) the last club to win consecutive European Cups. Milan (1994, 1995), AFC Ajax (1995, 1996), Juventus (1996, 1997) and Manchester United FC (2008, 2009) have all returned to the UEFA Champions League final as holders only to lose. • S.S. Lazio goalkeeper Marco Ballotta is the oldest player to compete in the UEFA Champions League having featured against Real Madrid CF on matchday six in 2007/08 aged 43 years and 252 days. Alessandro Costacurta is the oldest outfield player; the Milan defender was 40 years and 211 days when he played against AEK Athens FC in 2006/07. • Ryan Giggs is the oldest player to score in the competition, aged 37 years and 289 days, in Manchester United's 1-1 draw at SL Benfica on 14 September 2011. • Celestine Babayaro is the youngest player to have appeared; he was 16 years and 87 days when he started for RSC Anderlecht against FC Steaua Bucureşti on 23 November 1994. He was sent off in the 37th minute. • Peter Ofori-Quaye is the youngest player to have scored in the UEFA Champions League, aged 17 years and 195 days. He found the net in Olympiacos FC's 5-1 defeat at Rosenborg BK on 1 October 1997. • Lionel Messi became the first player to score five goals in a match in Barcelona's 7-1 win against Bayer 04 Leverkusen on 7 March 2012. Eight players, including Messi, have scored four times in a game, most recently Mario Gomez for FC Bayern München on matchday eight in 2011/12. • Barcelona have finished as group winners on 14 occasions, one more than Manchester United. • Barcelona hold the record for successive wins in the UEFA Champions League proper with nine, between 18 September 2002 and 18 February 2003. RSC Anderlecht's 12 straight defeats (10 December 2003 to 23 November 2005) is also a competition record. • Five teams have recorded six successive victories in a UEFA Champions League group stage: Milan (1992/93), Paris Saint-Germain FC (1994/95), FC Spartak Moskva (1995/96), Barcelona (2002/03, first group stage) and Real Madrid (2011/12). • Fifteen teams have gone through a UEFA Champions League group stage without picking up a single point, most recently Villarreal CF, FC Oţelul Galaţi and GNK Dinamo Zagreb in 2011/12. • Barcelona scored 20 goals in the 2011/12 group stage, equalling Manchester United's competition record from 1998/99. Barcelona scored 19 times in the 1999/2000 first group stage, a tally matched by Real Madrid last season. • Only RC Deportivo La Coruña (2004/05) and Maccabi Haifa FC (2009/10) have failed to score in a group stage. • Dinamo Zagreb conceded 22 goals in the 2011/12 group stage, a new record that was equalled by FC Nordsjælland last season. The previous highest total was 19, shared by MŠK Žilina (2010/11), Debreceni VSC (2009/10), FC Dynamo Kyiv (2007/08) and Ferencvárosi TC (1995/96). • No team has ever gone through a UEFA Champions League group stage without conceding a goal. Milan (1992/93), Ajax (1995/96), Juventus (1996/97 and 2004/05), Chelsea (2005/06), Liverpool FC (2005/06), Villarreal (2005/06) and Manchester United (2010/11) all let in just one. • Before their 3-1 win against Sporting Clube de Portugal on matchday six of the 2006/07 campaign, Spartak Moskva went 22 games without a victory in the competition. • The lowest total for a team qualifying from the group stage is seven points. The first to do it since three points for a win was introduced in 1995/96 were Legia Warszawa that same season before Dynamo Kyiv managed it in 1999/2000 and Liverpool in 2001/02. FC Lokomotiv Moskva and eventual finalists Juventus both progressed with seven points in 2002/03, as did Rangers FC and SV Werder Bremen in 2005/06. • Only two teams have ever won the UEFA Champions League on home soil: Borussia Dortmund (1997, final in Munich) and Juventus (1996, final in Rome), while Manchester United lost the 2011 final in London and 12 months later Bayern were beaten in the showpiece in their own stadium, the Fußball Arena München.
